For a short time on Saturday, November 20, the
bells and whistles of the casino will be replaced by bench racing and
acceptance speeches at the Argosy Casino as the O'Reilly MLRA rolls in for
their annual awards banquet.
The night will kick off at 5:30 pm with a social
hour that is sure to see plenty of bench racing and talk of the highly
competitive on-track action held throughout the 2004 racing season. The next
phase of the evening begins at 7:00 pm with dinner being served to all in
attendance. Immediately following the dinner it's time to hand out the
hardware as the top points earners will be recognized for their
accomplishments during the season.
Attendance is open to the public with tickets
being $30.00 in advance and $35.00 at the door. For more information or to
purchase tickets contact Harriett at 816-650-5063.

Belton, MO's Alan Vaughn came up the big winner
with the O'Reilly MLRA in 2004 as he captured his third straight crown and
fourth overall. Vaughn capped off the season with the win at Outlaw Motor
Speedway in Muskogee, OK that sealed the title and held off hard charging

Vaughn right to the very end. Veteran O'Reilly MLRA competitor and three time
champion Al Purkey brought his machine from his Coffeyville, KS base to finish
third with Brett LaFollette and O'Reilly MLRA rookie TJ Kuykendall rounding
out the top five in the final standings.

Alan Vaughn rolled into the beautiful Outlaw Motor
Speedway looking to not only notch another win on the 2004 O'Reilly MLRA tour,
but to also close the book on his fourth title run with the series. As the
checkered flag fell on the forty lap A feature Sunday Vaughn had grabbed both
to cap off a historic run to the championship.
As the green flag dropped outside front row
starter Mike Brown grabbed the top spot and held the point with polesitter
Vaughn shadowing his every move looking for a way around the front runner.
His chance opened up on lap thirteen as Vaughn was able to move past, but not
to be outdone Brown grabbed the lead once again only two laps later. Brown's
spot at the front was short lived as Vaughn was able to work past once again
two laps later. The front two quickly had company in the form of fourteenth
starting Steve Kosiski who had quickly worked his way through the field
charging to the front. The trio of Vaughn, Brown, and Kosiski diced back and
forth for the remainder of the event taking the checkered flag ahead of
Kosiski and Brown.
By virtue of the win Vaughn completed the run to
his third straight O'Reilly MLRA Championship to go along with his title run
in 1995.

Raceway Rumblings
By Mike Mathis
Great News! Jon Johnson is going home! I talked with Jon this
morning and he is getting released from the burn center in Wichita. Jon stated;
"I'm still in pain and have a lot of rehabilitation to go through but I
convinced the doctors to let me go home."
Jon also said; " They replaced the dressings this morning and they did it
without any pain killers. That was the only way I could go home." I guess Jon
believes in the renowned saying, Home is where the heart is. Jon has been
through two surgeries and numerous skin grafts. It is very important that he
walks and stretches the tendons in his ankles that were badly damaged.
We are all very happy that Jon is able to go home and we need to give him
moral support in his rehab effort. Jon's recovery is going to be a painful and
long-term process. We urge you to continue stay in touch with Jon and his
family. In our next and last column of the year will provide ways to send Jon
gifts and cards. You can always send cards and letters to DCRP, 804 West McArtor
, Suite 103, Dodge City, KS 67801 and we will forward them to Jon.
This Saturday night and Sunday afternoon we will have the final race event of
the 2004 race season. This is the 1st Annual Fall Classic Invitational hosting
racecars from around the region in the Modified, Super and Street Stock
Divisions. Come out and show these drivers our support of them and the finest
dirt track in the United States.
There will be drivers from more than 4 states to see who really is the best
of the best. This last weekend of the year we will guarantee our race fans one
of the most competitive and best race events you can watch. There are
sensational drivers coming to Dodge City that have heard about the great
facilities and race track we have.
On Saturday night at 6 p.m. we will kickoff the weekend with Qualifying races
and main events that will lock-in the top finishers for Sunday afternoons
finale. We will be racing Modifieds, Super and Street Stocks along with the
Cruisers during Saturday's event.
On Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. we will have the Modifieds, Super and Street
Stocks along with the final points race for the Hornets. There will be last
chance races to earn starting positions in the final main event. We will also
have trophy dashes with Saturday night main event winners that will determine
the front of the pack starting positions for the finale main event. By the time
the final's are ready to go onto the track we will have a great field of
racecars that will put on a race that will be nothing less than spectacular.
Grandstand admission for each race is only $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for teens
13-16, $3.00 for kids 6-12 with 5 and under Free. Saturday's race time is 6pm
with start time on Sunday at 2pm. Pit admission is $25.00 per person regardless
of age. Parents have to sign Minors Releases for anyone under 18 years of age.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel Stock Cars
along with the World Dirt Racing League
MLRA & WDRLA at Lakeside Speedway
Friday night 10/8 and Saturday 10/9
LATE PASS GIVE STEVE KOSISKI WDRL WIN AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY
Brady Smith Wraps up Series Points Title with Fourth Place Finish
(Kansas City, KS) Steve Kosiski roared past Terry Phillips four laps from
the checkers Saturday night to win the 50-lap Capital Federal Savings Late
Model Showdown, a WORLD Dirt Racing League event, at Lakeside Speedway near
Kansas City, Kansas.
The win completed a two-night turnaround for the Papillion, Nebraska
veteran, who failed to qualify for the series feature event the night before
on the Lakeside Speedway half-mile.
“Terry Phillips is a great racer and a good runner, and it felt good to be
up there running with the good guys tonight,” quipped Kosiski following the
win. “We’ve had some tough nights, and last night was definitely disgusting
for us.”
“The rains hit pretty hard Thursday night and it made the track hard for
them to prepare last night,” he added. “They did an very good job preparing
the race track tonight and made it good and raceable for all of us to run
on.”
Kosiski started fifth in the 28-car field but darted past second row
starters Kelly Boen and Eric Pember at the drop of the green flag, to settle
into the number three position behind Phillips and Denny Eckrich the first
trip in front of the grandstand.
With the leaders running through traffic, the race was slowed by a caution
flag on lap ten when Winona, Minnesota’s Keith Foss got into the wall in
turn two. Kosiski took advantage of the race stoppage and raced past Eckrich
and into the runner-up spot on the ensuing restart, with Phillips driving to
a seemingly comfortable advantage in his car number 75.
Kosiski began chopping into the southern Missouri driver’s lead and grabbed
the top spot momentarily as the two front-runners diced through lapped
traffic on lap 19, only two lose the point before the leaders crossed the
start-finish line. Kosiski again took a shot at the leader a pair of laps
later, but Phillips was able to keep his Presley’s Country Jubilee/GRT/Monte
Carlo in front by less than a car length as the pair raced through the
corners.
The final caution flag came out on lap 32, setting the stage for Kosiski’s
late race heroics. The driver of the TB & Company/Double D Hook ‘N Go
sponsored car number-52 stalked the front-running Phillips for the next
dozen circuits before pulling alongside the leader on lap 44. Three laps
later, Kosiski powered to the outside racing out of turn two and outran
Phillips down the backstretch to grab the lead.
“You really had to watch how far you got into turn four,” said Kosiski of
his late-race pass. “But turn two really helped me because I could actually
go above Terry a little bit. I knew I wasn’t ever going to get room with
Terry there, so I had to keep working turn two and hoping something would
happen to where I could get enough momentum coming off.”
“I knew if I passed him too soon I would be in trouble,” he added. “I’m just
glad it worked out the way it did."
Denny Eckrich overpowered Phillips on the white flag lap to grab second,
with Phillips holding off a fast-finishing Brady Smith for third.
Smith’s fourth place finish wrapped up the 2004 PolyDome Super Series
driver’s championship for the 26-year old Wisconsin native. Smith, of Solon
Springs, became the first driver is series history to win both the series
championship and the Seubert Calf Ranches Rookie-of-the-Year award during

WORLD Dirt Racing League
(Kansas City, KS) -- Brady Smith outran veteran Missouri
driver Terry Phillips Friday night following a late-race restart to win the
first night of the Capital Federal Savings Late Model Showdown, a WORLD Dirt
Racing League PolyDome Super Series event, here at Lakeside Speedway.
October 8, 2004
With the 35-lap victory, the Solon Springs, Wis., driver can wrap up the WDRL
drivers¹ championship by simply taking the green flag in the second round of
the Late Model Showdown at Lakeside on Saturday night.
"We had a great run here tonight," said Smith following the win. "The guys
worked real hard on the car all night, and had the thing dialed in. It was
kind of a handful at the beginning. I don't know if it was the track or the
car that came to us in the end, but this is a great win.
"I've never had the opportunity to race Terry (Phillips) before," he added.
"I've heard a lot of good stuff about him, and I am just happy to hold off a
veteran like him at a track we had never been at before."
After winning the six-lap Iowa-Illinois Taylor Insulation Pole Dash, Smith
started on the inside pole and darted into the lead at the drop of the green
flag with Omaha, Nebraska's John Anderson running a close second, just ahead
of Phillips and Kevin Kile.
The first of six caution flags waved on lap six when Kelly Boen got turned
around in turn three, with a second caution coming a lap later when Anderson
and Phillips tangled briefly in turn two while racing for second, sending
Phillips to the pits to replace a flat tire.
On the restart, Anderson outran Smith up the front straightaway and into turn
one to take over the lead. But three laps later, on lap 10, Smith returned the
favor, roaring off the bottom out of turn four to grab the
advantage as the pair raced side by side in front of the grandstands.
Anderson's THT Designs/Rocket/Grand Prix regained the point on lap 11. But
following a lap-16 caution period, Smith grabbed the top spot for good,
powering to the bottom into turn one, leaving Anderson to battle it out with
Denny Eckrich for second, just ahead of Tommy Rowe and Phillips, who had
steadily worked his way back through the field following his lap-seven tangle.
The race was slowed by two more caution periods on laps 23 and 25, allowing
Phillips to wheel into second. But over the final 10 circuits, Smith's Kapus-Erickson
Chrysler/Big Red Motorsports entry proved to be class of the field, winning
the race to the checkers by a dozen car lengths.
"We finally got this place figured out in the last 12 laps," Smith said. "I
figured out (turns) one and two earlier in the race, but in those last twelve
laps, I finally figured out how to run through (turns) three and
four.
"Those last few laps, I could put the car in the corner and mash the gas all
the way through," he added.
A total of 77 Super Late Models went through technical inspection for the
first of two nights of racing, which was co-sanctioned by the Midwest Late
Model Racing Association (MLRA).

The 2nd Annual Al Bodenhamer Memorial is now in the record books! David
Turner of Adrian Missouri and a long time friend of the late Al Bodenhamer was
both honored and excited at his winning of tonight's event!
"Al Bodenhamer's fight with his Cancer was hard to watch" stated Turner in
remembering his friend. "Jason and his family put their lives on hold for the
last couple of years so that Al could enjoy what time he had left" Turner
continued. "Jason stayed close and took care of the business that the family
had built, raced when he could and was married to Jackie all in time that Al
could see that his Son Jason was settling down" Turner concluded.
The icing continued for the Adrian State Bank sponsored Rocket racer when
Turner took the honors by winning the Race Engine Builders event for his long
time engine builder and Crew
Chief Scott Bailey of Peculiar, Missouri. "Scott's been there for me in so
many ways, he's put us together more than once and he's held our Team together
through all we've been through" Turner joked up when remembering where he's
been.
Al Purkey of Coffeyville Kansas came in second battling with Blue Grass Iowa's
Gary Webb taking third. Coming in -- in 4th place after never having seen
Adrian Missouri nor having run on anything as small as Adrian was California's
Mike Johnson in the 2J towing in from Clovis California. Now if people only
knew, Mike Johnson is a hitter from the small Central California town nestled
between Bakersfield and Fresno where he's had many a lap at the famed Oildale
Track - so Adrian had to seem like home. Following Johnson was the newly
crowned MARS Champion Terry Phillips, then in sixth it was Jason Bodenhamer.
Jason Bodenhamer who had less than 40 hours to build a brand new race car
from his devastating crash at Wheatland Missouri on Saturday night. Tonight
starting the feature would have been like winning the Main event for
Bodenhamer - his Father would have been so proud. Kansas City Kansas driver
Brett LaFollete held down the seventh position while Ken Schrader finished
eighth then it was David Barker Aaron Seabaugh TJ Kuykendall and Alan Vaughn
crossing the line in 12th.
With 35 Cars on hand for the start of Speed weeks in Kansas City!

Al Purkey nabs Wheatland Fall Classic
Title
Clint Brown
October 3, 2004
Al Purkey showed once again why he is a dominant
force when the O'Reilly MLRA Thunder Tour rolls into town as he bested a field
of forty-six cars that traveled to Wheatland Raceway for the Third Annual Fall
Classic.
Purkey jumped to the front of the pack as the
green flag waved, but the going wasn't easy as the #45 of Keokuk, IA's Tommy
Elston applied some heavy pressure looking to take over the top spot. Elston
was able to briefly work his way to the lead, but Purkey quickly found a line
to his liking to move back out front and open up a three car length advantage
as the leaders entered lapped traffic. While the two front runners dealt with
the slower cars Terry Phillips closed up on the bumper of Elston all while
Gary Stolba and Jason Bodenhamer battled it out for the fourth position. The
lead pack sliced through lapped traffic with the front three separated by no
more than three car lengths with Bodenhamer working past Stolba for fourth and
quickly began reeling in Phillips. With ten laps to go the leaders were in
very heavy lapped traffic and contact with a slower car sent the #2B of
Bodenhamer on a scary ride as his car flipped multiple times into the fence at
the end of the front stretch. Thankfully Bodenhamer emerged under his own
power, but the car was done. With the cleanup completed the field went back
to green for the final ten lap dash which Purkey held on to as the field raced
across the line. Elston held on for second with Phillips, Alan Vaughn, and
Brett LaFollette rounding out the top five.

Hello Racers and Fans of
Racing............
If you read nothing else, please read the Summary of
this article I have sent to you, Feel it doesn't apply? Better guess again!
You're reading about the 'what's to come' for all of us in the near
or distant future! Read-up and ask questions of other Racers and how they are
handling this issue!
I will continue to keep you updated as I become updated. In the mean time
don't blow-off this article that is LONG and information FILLED - print it and
read it when you have time!
Pattie Frost
Summary
To sum up the most important facts, here is what you need to know:
• You cannot use a motor home or registered RV to pull you race car
trailer legally. You must register it as a truck or with apportioned plates.
• Intrastate travel: If your truck and trailer and all of its contents
weigh over 10,000 pounds but under 26,000, you need to have a federal medical
card, fire extinguisher and warning triangles. If you travel more than
150 air miles from your residence, you must also keep a log book.
• Interstate travel: If your truck and trailer and all of its contents
weigh over 10,000 pounds but under 26,000, you need to comply with all
interstate commerce regulations that were spelled out above.
• Interstate travel: If your truck and trailer and all of its contents
weighs over 26,000 pounds, it is suggested to get Apportioned license
plates, follow all commercial vehicle regulations as well as apply for
an International Fuel Tax Agreement Plan license.
• If your hauler, including the power unit and trailer, weighs over
26,000, you must have a commercial driver’s license and all other commercial
vehicle applications will apply to the vehicle.
• DOT numbers are only required on single trucks and combinations with
a
gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds that travel outside its home
state. These regulations do apply to everyone, not just racers; racers are not
being singled out by law enforcement. For example, people that show
horses, snowmobile racers, bass fisherman and construction businesses are all
subject to the same laws.
Many of the things talked about in this article are common requirements
for the larger truck operators or owners. Racers have never really
thought
of themselves as being engaged in a commercial enterprise and involved in
interstate commerce. As stated earlier, our haulers have been
getting
bigger, and we’re getting noticed by department of transportation law
enforcement officials. When on the road, you may come across officials
who are more informed than others, so you can do your homework now or take
your chances with them later.
Not all law enforcement officials understand completely how the racing
business fits into interstate and intrastate commerce, and this can be a
complicated and frustrating process to get caught up in. For now, you
should start getting acquainted with what is probably going to become a
fact of life for all of us.
REPRINTED FROM ALL THE DIRT RACING NEWS
Copyright 2004
By John Kaanta & Chris Burback
EAU CLAIRE, WI - All the glitz and glamour of owning a large race
hauler for most WISSOTA racers may come to a screeching halt. That is, if your
tow
vehicle is not properly registered.
Over the past few years, Department of Transportation (DOT) law
enforcement officials have been clamping down on racers because of their
haulers.
Many of the area’s racers who have been targeted by the law enforcement
officials think they were being singled out and got picked on. However, the
laws
regarding large trucks and trailers have been in place for many years
and have historically been directed to the large tractor-trailer rigs that
are more conventionally associated with a commercial enterprise.
First, WISSOTA race teams need to understand they are engaged in a
commercial enterprise while towing their race cars to and from the race
track. There are three criteria to determine if your race team is a
commercial enterprise.
The first is if you race for profit and declare prize money as income
from a race track for tax purposes, such as receiving a 1099 form or filing a
Schedule C (business income and loss) form.
Next, does your team accept products and/or money from sponsors
displayed on the race car? Just the fact that the race car has even one
sponsor
sticker automatically makes it a commercial enterprise. The argument
made regarding the sponsors is that they provide you, the racer, with cash or
contributions that they probably claim as a business expense for
advertising. Because you further that business with advertising
exposure by displaying the name on your race car, you are in the loop of
commercial
activity.
Thirdly, is the gross vehicle weight of your hauler, whether it is a
combination of a truck and trailer or a single unit, greater than 10,001
pounds? Almost everyone that has a good sized pickup truck with a
trailer, race car, parts, etc. will exceed the 10,000 pound mark.
If you answered yes to those questions, you’re about to get a big
headache and to avoid any penalties you should try to comply with all state
and
federal department of transportation regulations.
Once your racing operation has been identified as a commercial
enterprise, then the hauler you use to get the race car to and from the track
is
considered a commercial motor vehicle and falls under all the state and
federal regulations that the big trucks have. The DOT has realized
that our type of racing has turned into big business, and therefore, is
checking
our tow rigs for state and federal compliance.
Now that we’ve established that nearly every WISSOTA competitor is
involved in a commercial enterprise, let’s try to decipher vehicle
registration,
licensing and DOT regulations.
Generally speaking, if you follow the federal DOT guidelines for vehicle
registration and licensing, you will likely be within your state’s
guidelines; however, you may want to check with your local department of
transportation to be sure. Listed below are several phone numbers and
websites to gather more detailed information.

Interstate Travel
If you have a commercial motor vehicle that has a gross weight rating or
gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, you must
comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). However, this
only applies to you if you travel out of your home state, or over 100 air
miles from your residence in-state. If your hauler is in excess of 10,000
pounds, then you must adhere to the following regulations:
• You must be 21 years old and have a DOT medical card, which you can
easily obtain at a clinic or hospital after a brief physical.
• You must keep a log book of miles traveled if you travel more than
100 air miles from your residence, which is very inexpensive and can be
purchased at any truck stop. DOT regulations state that a driver can operate a
commercial motor vehicle for 10 hours per day, 15 total hours of on duty or
70
total hours in eight days.
• You must have an onboard a fire extinguisher.
• You must have warning triangles.
• You must have brakes on all axles; however, surge brakes are illegal.
• You must comply with random drug and alcohol testing.
• You must have a periodic inspection done and have a copy of that
inspection or a sticker displayed on the vehicle.
• You must complete a pre- and post-trip inspection of your vehicle as
well as keep maintenance records.
• You must also obtain and display a US DOT number, which is free and
can be obtained by calling the number listed above.
If your hauler’s gross vehicle weight is over 26,000, including the
power unit, trailer, occupants, fuel tanks, water tanks and trailer contents,
you, as a driver, must obtain a commercial driver’s license as well as comply
with the above criteria.
***
Another common misconception WISSOTA racers have is that they can
legally register their haulers as motor homes or recreational vehicles (RVs).
Registering the new, non-conventional motor homes or conventional motor
homes is legal until you attach your race car trailer and travel to the
race track, furthering a commercial enterprise. If you wish to use a motor
home as part of your commercial operation, you must register the motor home
in the “Y” (truck) class. However, if you register your motor home in the
“Y” class, you are limited to intrastate travel. Once you cross a state line
with that motor home, the registration is void, meaning every other
state traveled in sees it as an unregistered commercial vehicle, unless you
also register in those states.
If you own a race car hauler that weighs over 26,000 pounds and plan on
traveling into another state, the easiest and least expensive
registration method is with the International Registration Plan (IRP) and
utilizing
Apportioned plates. This means you register in your home state and list
the other states you plan on traveling in. The registration fee gets split
up based on the percentage of miles you travel in each listed state. Under
the IRP you must also apply for an International Fuel Tax Agreement license.
This is an agreement that requires the heavier trucks to log their
miles, fuel purchases, etc. so the IRP associated states get their fair share
of fuel tax. The truck owner must submit quarterly reports which are
subsequently reviewed to see if you owe more or less in fuel tax. Yeah,
you guessed it, more paperwork and added expense.
***
Intrastate travel, meaning you only travel within your state’s borders,
has slightly different criteria and more detailed information can be
obtained by calling your local department of transportation; those numbers and
website addresses were listed earlier.
An example of the differences in state department of transportation
regulations is vehicle length. In Wisconsin, the maximum length of a
single truck or hauler is 40 feet, or a combination of truck and trailer
cannot be longer than 65 feet and motor homes cannot be longer than 45 feet.
In
Minnesota, the maximum length of a combination truck and trailer is 75
feet.
That means that it is illegal to operate a 75 foot combination of a
truck and trailer with Minnesota registration in Wisconsin.
Lastly, but probably most importantly to many racers, alcoholic
beverages cannot be consumed in a commercial motor vehicle and can only be
transported in a commercial motor vehicle as part of the manifested shipment.
That
means that if you have a conventional motor home or one of the new haulers
that resemble motor homes, there can not be any alcoholic beverages inside
the power unit. It might also be illegal to have alcohol in a cooler inside
the trailer.
***
Exceptions
There are a few exceptions to the department of transportation
regulations.
The first is if you use a small pick-up truck, such as an S-10, Ranger
or Dakota, pull your race car with an open trailer and the total
combination is less than 10,000 pounds. The fact that you have sponsors on
your race
car may be a sticky spot with the rules; however, because the size of the
overall vehicle is small, law enforcement may overlook you.
The next exception is if your vehicle is over 10,000 pounds but under
26,000 pounds and you travel less than 150 air miles from your residence.
The final exception is if your vehicle is over 10,000 pounds but under
26,000 pounds and you travel less than 30 miles into another state
(Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa).
***
• DOT numbers are only required on single trucks and combinations with a
gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds that travel outside its home
Racers have never really thought
of themselves as being engaged in a commercial enterprise and involved in
interstate commerce. As stated earlier, our haulers have been getting
bigger, and we’re getting noticed by department of transportation law
enforcement officials.

Reid Millard #14M MLRA Injury update 9-19-04
O'Reilly MLRA Update
In a phone call to St.Lukes Hospital in Kansas City Missouri this morning it
was learned that Reid Millard has been released from the hospital
today.
Late yesterday afternoon in talking with fellow racer, Chris Smyser and
a good friend of Reid's, stated that most of the test came back showing
nothing was broken just badly torn and bruised. Good News.
Reid Millard a young man of I'd say 30's to early 40's has been racing
as a hobby when his profession would allow. Reid is a very successful business
man in the Jefferson City area with the Owning and Operations of Funeral
Homes. Millard has been very active with the Boy's and Girls Clubs of
America and working within the intercity community education and
betterment groups.
Glad to hear Millard will be on the road to recovery and we look for his
return as soon as he's able.
Thanks for reading...........

Gary Stolba O'Reilly MLRA Win list at LA Raceway
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel Thunder Tour 2004
Buckner, Missouri
Gary Stolba of Willow Springs drove about 200 miles across
the state of Missouri to take the first ever O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel event at
Mike White's LA Raceway in LaMonte, Missouri.
"Stolba shows up every once in a while and he's usually running in the top 5
before the night's over" stated a fellow competitor of the MLRA. "You just
don't know where he's going to race-he has good equipment and seems to like
the challenge that a new track brings" Purkey continued with a grin.
It wasn't an easy shot however as Stolba lined up on the seventh row just
behind Purkey. Passing points in the heat race contribute dramatically to the
overall program's line up. Jason Bodenhamer garnered the high-point (passing
points) front-row pole position at the start of the main.
At the drop of the Green-Flag it was Bodenhamer in the GRT-Buzzard Engine
Hitchcock Motorsports rig leading the current MLRA Champ Alan Vaughn on a drag
race with St. Joesph's Missouri's Dale Eaton settling into third for the first
several laps. By the fifth lap it was Bodenhamer, Vaughn, C.J. Lyle from his
10th starting spot on row five into third. Purkey coming from 11 had wasted no
time moving thru the field and was now in 4th followed by fellow Coffeyville
Kansas computer Russell Portwood and bringing with him Dustin Mooneyham.
Bodenhamer continued to lead Vaughn and Purkey got around
C.J. Lyle to take over 3rd. Portwood, Stolba, Mooneyham, Eaton, David Barker
and T.J. Kuykendall rounded out the top ten at the end of 10 laps.
At the half-way point with twenty laps completed Bodenhamer was catching the
tail end of the field and put Herb Nagy down a lap. Vaughn would have to
contend with Purkey and Purkey knew that Stolba had moved around both C.J.
Lyle and Portwood and was now in fourth. Dale Eaton who saw his night go bad
when he was caught up in an earlier accident bringing out the caution flag was
now mired back in the pack and on the twenty four lap was between
Purkey and Stolba as Bodenhamer continued his lead with Vaughn in second.
Herb Nagy was going thru the leaders and as Lyle riding in fifth and Portwood
in six.
Bodenhamer continued the lead when as they were once again approaching lapped
traffic. Randy Reynolds another good computer who would latter blow a motor,
may have been feeling the effects of a loss-of horsepower as he was hanging on
when he and Larry Stephonson tangled sending Bodenhamer and Vaughn into
evasive maneuvers. As the Yellow flew for the 55 Reynolds,
both Vaughn and Bodenhamer went off the track (no fence) and came up onto the
track Vaughn pulled to a stop so that the MLRA Official could check the car
and sure-enough Vaughn had cut a tire from debris where
earlier in the night the Reid Millard car crashed. Vaughn was then given the 2
laps to retire to the Pit Area and change the tire. As Vaughn pulled back out
onto the track he was now lineup in 14 for the twenty-fifth lap.
On the Green it was Bodenhamer Purkey, Stolba, Lyle, Portwood, Barker, as they
rounded the twenty-sixth lap with David Turner in seventh. As the pack
continued to head towards the ten to go, Bodenhamer still had the lead. Purkey
was beginning to feel Stolba moving around on the track Lyle was waiting for
the party in front to get started, and Turner was eyeing Portwood.
Coming down for the 34 go round, Stolba saw his move got by Purkey in the
other 33 and began to challenge the leader. On lap 36 with just four more to
go Stolba went racing! Taking the lead with Bodenhamer and Purkey once more
battling lapped traffic as they crossed the line for the Checkered flag on lap
40 it was Stolba, Bodenhamer, Purkey, Turner who had gotten by Lyle on lap 35
then Portwood, Barker and Vaughn. Gary Gorby and Clint Long
rounded out the top ten finishers.
Feature Results:
1.) Gary Stolba; 2.) Jason Bodenhamer; 3.) Al Purkey; 4.) David Turner; 5.)
C.J. Lyle; 6.) Russell Portwood; 7.) David Barker; 8.) Alan Vaughn; 9.) Gary
Gorby; 10.) Clint Long; 11.) Stephen Oerly; 12.) Randy McGraw; 13.)
T.J.Kuykendall; 14.) Larry Stephoson; 15.) Dustin Mooneyham; 16.) Dale Eaton;
17.) Herb Nagy; 18.) Larry Clawson; 19.) Kerry Schulze; 20.) Randy Reynolds;
21.) Chris Smyser; 22.) Brett LaFollette
Heat Results:
Heat 1
St.Joseph, Missouri's Dale Eaton lead wire to wire for the second time this
year taking the heat race win over N.Kansas City's Larry Clawson. Coming
home third after running in a tight battle with Clawson was Randy McGraw,
Chris Smyser continues to build back the strength in his arm-wrist with his
fourth place. David Turner, Jake Morris, Bob Cumming, Richard Weber, and
Gary Gorby round out the field.
Heat 2
The second race was stopped after a first lap crash when cars spun in front
of Reid Millard's #14M leaving him no place to go. The crash caused the
Millard car to flip. Life-Flight helicopter was dispatched to transport
Millard for precautionary measures as he complained of soreness in his neck
and tingling in his legs. Once the accident was cleared racing resumed with
Brett LaFollette taking the lead and holding off Clint Long and Russell
Portwood, Chris Smsyer took third followed by Darrell Mooneyham, Leroy
Jackson, Bob Hillge, Greg Choate (dnf), Reid Millard (dnf).
Heat 3
Al Purkey starting from the front row pole held the lead until the Yellow
flew for Kenny Bohman on lap three. On the restart Jason Bodenhamer who had
been in the catbird seat made his move and took the lead. Gary Stolba used
the action ahead as Terry Melton perhaps let off the gas watching Purkey and
Bodenhamer next thing he knew Stolba was around him for third. At the
Checkered flag it was still Bodenhamer, Purkey, Stolba, Melton, Kerry
Schulze in fifth, Stephen Oerly, Wayne Sutton, and Kenny Bohman finishing in
8th.
Heat 4
As the field took the Green Aaron Seabaugh, Thomas Hammond and CJ Lyle got
together bringing out the yellow for a restart. Once more Alan Vaughn from
the front row took the lead Rookie contender Randy Reynolds was right on
line in second followed by David Barker and long time fellow competitor of
the Missouri, Shorty Acker., C.J. Lyle, Aaron Seabaugh, John Farmer, and
Thomas Hammond rounded out the first go round. At the finish it was Vaughn
wire to wire. Reynolds in second with Lyle moving up for third. David Barker
Aaron Seabaugh, Short Acker, John Farmer and Thomas Hammond for the finish.
Heat 5
Youngster Dustin Mooneyham started off the front row and lead to the
Checkers with good racing action between Larry Stephoson, and Rookie
T.J. Kuykendall swapping the second place position. Kuykendall would take
the point when it counted to finish second. Coming in fourth was Kevin
Kiaser, Lyle Shephard in fifth, James House, Herb Nagy and Larry Moon
finishing in eighth.
1st B Feature
Terry Melton from the second row took the lead with Chris Smyser in second
on the first go round. By the third lap the yellow waved for Lyle Shephard
and Chad Clark. On the restart it was Smyser exercising the stiffness in his
arm to take the lead with Oklahoma's Melton in second and Stephen Oerly
moving around Seabaugh for third. At the halfway point it was Smyser Melton
and Oerly. Stephen Oerly was sitting in wait and was around Melton and
looking for Smyser by the lap 9. As they crossed the flag with two to go
Oerly must have been counting it down as he was on the heels and made the
move to take Smyser or was Smyser wanting a different line? As they crossed
for the white flag with one more to go Smyser garnered back the lead. Not to
be outdone at the Checkered Flag it was Stephen Orely coming across in
first, Smyser in second, Melton, Seabaugh, Gary Gorby, Bob Cumming, Chad
Clark, Leroy Johnson, Richard Weber, Lyle Shepard, Herb Nagy, Thomas
Hammond, Wayne Sutton.
2nd B Feature
David Turner took the lead on the start and held Kerry Schulz in check, A
bit of battle in the early going between Kevin Kiaser and Darrell Mooneyham
saw the match cross the line with Mooneyham in third Kiaser in fourth. Jake
Morris took fifth while Larry Moon, Shorty Acker, Kenny Bohman, Bob Hillge,
and John Farmer made up the top ten.
42 Cars in attendance tonight.

Hello Racers and Fans...........
Friday night at LA Raceway in La Monte, Missouri during the running of the
first ever O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel event during the heat races, the #14M of
Reid Millard had a car spinout in front of him and collect the # 14M causing
him to flip the Latemodel.
"Reid is a good competitor and was sorting out the field of cars when another
spun and he had no where to go" stated Alan "Cowboy" Chancellor of the MLRA.
"He whacked his head and the Helmet did crack" Chancellor concluded.
Reid Millard was Life Flighted out of the Speedway and taken to Kansas City's
St.Lukes Hospital. They have a Trauma Unit and that was the quickest way to
transport - not that it
was life-threatening.
"Due to the Privacy Act I had to wait to contact either Relatives or Reid at
the Hospital to release any information that is why the delay" stated Pattie
Frost of the MLRA.
"I spoke to Reid Millard this morning (Saturday at 9:30am) from the Hospital
and asked if it was OK to post what we knew so far." Stated Frost. "Reid said
yes, due to the Privacy Act" Frost concluded.
"Pattie, I'm in extreme pain, I'm positioned on the bed to where I cannot
move, extreme pain." I asked if he knew what they were going to do and he
stated that they were going to do a battery of tests this morning some time
and hope to know
something later today.
So, this is what we know at the present time -- he whacked the helmet good and
cracked it (don't know the brand). He was able to move arms and hands and
complained at the track of soreness in the neck and tingling in the legs and
feet.
I'll keep in touch with you up as I know.
Adrian's race for the 2nd Annual Al Bodenhamer Memorial was postponed until
Wednesday night Oct 6 giving the KC area quite a weekend......
Wed. Oct 6 at Adrian with the MLRA
Thur Oct 7 at Lakeside Speedway in KC KS with TORA
Friday Oct 8 at Lakeside Speedway in KC KS with MLRA
