The season ending races were held Saturday night at Farmer City Raceway
under the banner of NALMS series with $8,000 to win. Friday night's winner
Dennis Erb was also Saturday night's winner. This was also the season
finale for the NALMS series.
The night started out with 2004 Champion Roger Long turning in fast time
of the 31 drivers at 13.212 seconds. Heat races went to Kevin Weaver over
Jason Fegers, Wes Steidinger over Eric Smith, Dennis Erb Jr over Billy
Drake and Steve Hillard over Richie Hedrick. The semi feature went to Joe
Harlan over Don O'Neal. Rohn Moon and Roger Long were given the two
provisionals.
Kevin Weaver took off in the lead at the start of the 50 lap feature, with
Wes Steidinger in tow, Steidinger at times pulling alongside Weaver.
Finally, Steidinger took the lead while in traffic on lap 28, only to lose
it back one lap later to Weaver. Billy Drake and Dennis Erb were putting
on their own show for third, when all of a sudden on lap 36, Erb just
blasted past Drake, drove around Steidinger for second, and two laps later
blew past Weaver for the lead and never looked back. There were two laps
to go when Steidinger, who was still in the top five, retired for the
race, setting up a mad two lap dash for the finish. Erb managed to hold
off Weaver for the win, with Drake third, Steve Hillard in fourth, and Don
O'Neal in fifth.

Erb Completes Sweep in NALMS
Finale
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Farmer City, IL (Sept 25) Dennis Erb
Jr. of Carpentersville, IL followed up his Friday night Northern Allstar
Late Model Series (NALMS) win with an $8000 victory in Saturday night's
season capper for the NALMS series at Farmer City Raceway.
8 time and current Farmer City Raceway
champion took to the track first in qualifications and set a mark of
13.212 that would hold up as the other 30 participants were unable to
topple him from the top of the charts. Kevin Weaver would lead the pack
to the stripe in heat one followed by Jason Feger, Mike Mullvain, and RJ
Gall. Wes Steidinger would withstand an early challenge from Gary May
to take heat two in front of Eric Smith, May, and Don Hammer. Dennis
Erb Jr. would beat Billy Drake, Brian Shirley, and Kerby Damery to take
the 3rd heat. The 4th and final heat would goto Steve Hillard with
Richie Hedrick, Duane Chamberlain, and Mike Glynn rounding out the
transfer positions. Joe Harlan, Don O'Neal, Chris Dick, and Junior
Shickel would transfer through the conci with Rohn Moon and Roger Long
being awarded the two provisional starting spots to round out the 22 car
field.
Steidinger would lead the pack into
turn one from his pole starting position but Weaver would bypass him
through 3 & 4 to lead the first lap with Drake, Erb, and Hillard
circling the track 3 wide for the third spot. Weaver and Steidinger
would begin to pull away from the field as the three wide fray continued
behind them until the 6th lap when Erb would get a toe hold on the third
spot leaving Drake and Hillard battling for 4th. A lap 10 caution for
Chamberlain who blew a motor and a lap 14 caution for Hedrick who spun
after contact with O'Neal slowed the early going and kept the leaders
out of lapped traffic. But once back under way the race was on as the
top 4 of Weaver, Steidinger, Erb, and Drake would pull away from the
field all the while slicing and dicing trying to gain position. The
leaders would get into traffic at the half way mark as Steidinger was
putting heat on Weaver looking under him through the turns, but Weaver
would edge back ahead down the straights. Steidinger would have a good
run through 3&4 on the 28th circuit leading the lap by a nose but Weaver
would power back by down the back stretch to resume the lead and then
moved his lane down a bit in hopes of blocking the groove that
Steidinger was using to put pressure on him for the lead. Steidinger
would stay close for a few laps but wouldn't be able to bypass Weaver
again. The 37 lap mark was the point when Erb made his move, using the
high groove he sped past Steidinger, who was beginning to fall back with
a deflating right front tire, and then shot by Weaver on the next
circuit to grab the point. Erb was separating from the field when the
final caution flew on the 48th circuit when Steidinger came to a stop in
turn 2 after his tire completely deflated. Erb was undaunted as he once
again sped away and led the final three lap dash unchallenged to grab
the checkers and the victory. Weaver, Drake, Hillard, O'Neal, Hedrick,
Smith, Harlan, Shirley, and May completed the top 10.
Erb remarking on his $8000 win and
$10,000 weekend stated "I always run good here, I've had a good
weekend." Erb, who has been on a hot streak lately picking up a
$10,000 to win event at nearby Fairbury, IL on Labor Day weekend and
placing 10th in the granddaddy of all Late Model events, the World 100,
later commented "The car's been really good lately, it was really nice I
had a good car to bring here this weekend." Steidinger, who was a
factor for much of the race before dropping from contention with a flat
tire remarked "Kevin (Weaver) and I got together in lapped traffic and I
cut a tire. I could feel the right front going down for about 10 laps
and it finally let go." He then continued "We just grazed out there,
I'm not sure that's what caused the flat, I may have run over something
on the track. I just know I felt it going down shortly after the
contact."
Erb's winning Rayburn was powered by Hedrick
Precision Engines and is sponsored by Petroff Towing, B&K Sportswear and
Vinyl Graphics, Peterson Aluminum Corporation, AFCO Racing Products, and
Reaber Transport.

The Northern All Stars series came to Farmer City with a $2000 to win
special on Friday night,
and $8000 to win season finale for Saturday night. Friday night's show saw
Gary May turn in
the fastest time overall of the 36 late models on hand at 13.198 seconds
around the quarter
mile track. The dash went to Don O'Neal over Gary May, Joe Harlan and
Smith. The 20 lap,
$500 to win late model shootout for the year's dash winners went to the
2004 NALMS champion
Brian Shirley, who ran away from the field until a late caution allowed
Dennis Erb Jr, Ryan
Dauber, Jr Shickel and Don Hammer to close up the field. That is also how
they finished.
Heat races went to Brian Shirley over Don O'Neal, Ryan Dauber over Dennis
Erb Jr, Billy Drake
over Steve Hillard, who gets my vote for the great move of the night, as
Hillard was in fifth place
at the white flag, passing Duane Chamberlain, Eric Smith and Wes
Steindinger all on the last
corner. The fourth heat went to Kevin Weaver over Jason Fegers. Semi
features went to
Joe Harlan over Gary May, and Wes Steidinger over Rohn Moon.
The 30 lap feature started out with Brian Shirley jumping out in the
lead while Billy Drake and
Kevin Weaver battled side by side for the first 17 laps, until Weaver
finally got the momentum,
and moved around both Drake and Shirley for the lead, which he held until
lap 24 when Dennis
Erb Jr swept by and took the lead for the final six laps.

Erb Takes Round One of NALMS
Finale
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Farmer City, IL (Sept 24) The 2004
Northern Allstar Late Model Series Tour (NALMS) rolled into Farmer City
Raceway for a two night season finale. Dennis Erb Jr. of
Carpentersville, IL started off the weekend with a $2000 victory besting
the field of 36 late models in the opening round.
Gary May set the fast lap during
qualifications with a lap of 13.198 to get the evening started. Brian
Shirley, looking very strong early in the evening powered through the
first set of turns to grab the point in the first heat from his inside
2nd row starting spot and went on to a convincing win over Don O'Neal,
Jr. Shickel, and Butch Smith. Heat two saw Dennis Erb Jr., Michael
Bradley, and Ryan Dauber complete the first lap 3 wide before Erb
settled into the lead. Dauber came charging back to grab the point at
the half way mark and went on to win the heat over Erb, Don Walden, and
Bradley. Billy Drake withstood some early pressure from Wes Steidinger
in the third heat to take the checkers in that preliminary event.
Steidinger suffered a flat tire on the last lap creating a log jam for
the second spot with Steve Hillard using the situation to power from 5th
to second out of turn 4 followed by Duane Chamberlain and Eric Smith.
Kevin Weaver moved to the front on the 4th lap of the 4th heat and went
on to win the event ahead of Jason Feger, Chris Dick who had started
last due to not recording a qualification time after breaking during his
run, and Richie Hedrick. Joe Harlan led flag to flag coming home ahead
of Gary May in the first conci with Wes Steidinger beating Rohn Moon in
the second to bring the field to 20 cars. Don Hammer and Bruce White
were added to the field as provisionals and the field was set for the 30
lap main event.
Shirley continuing where he had left
off in his heat powered away to the early lead from his pole position
ahead of Weaver, and 2 side by side duels behind them, Drake and Dauber
for 3rd and O'Neal and Erb for 5th. Shirley continued to pull away from
the pack until he started getting into slower cars on the 13th circuit.
Weaver, Drake, and Erb closed quickly on the leader as he struggled with
lapped traffic with Weaver powering by on the 18th circuit and Erb
following suit getting by Shirley 3 laps later. 7 laps from the finish
the races only caution flew when Walden found the turn 4 wall after
trying to avoid contact with the leader as he veered to the right as he
was passing Walden. Erb used the re-start to pull along side Weaver
through turns one and two and completed the pass coming out of 4 and
went on to grab the checkers with Weaver, Drake, Shirley, O'Neal, Feger,
Dauber, Hillard, Steidinger, and Hedrick rounding out the top 10.
In victory lane Erb stated "It took
awhile to get going, we had some hard tires on. We really didn't want
to see the yellow, I thought I was the best car in traffic, but it all
worked out in the end." He then added, "My car's been working real good
lately, we'll be back tomorrow to see what we can do." Brian Shirley,
who looked to be the man to beat on the night during preliminary and
early feature action remarked "The car was good when I was in the open,
but I struggled once we got into traffic." He added "The track
slickened up and I couldn't get the bite to get around as well as the
others."
Erb's winning Rayburn was powered by Hedrick
Precision Engines and is sponsored by Petroff Towing, B&K Sportswear and
Vinyl Graphics, Peterson Aluminum Corporation, AFCO Racing Products, and
Reaber Transport.

1, While Shirley Wraps Up Title in NALMS Labor Day Weekend Tour
Jeffrey A. Bayless
The Northern Allstar Late Model
Series (NALMS) used the Labor Day Weekend to make a 3 stop tour
through Southern Illinois and Indiana with a stop at Godfrey Speedway
in Godfrey Illinois on Friday the 3rd, Mount Vernon Speedway in Mount
Vernon, Illinois on Saturday the 4th and Tri-State Speedway in
Haubstadt, Indiana on Sunday the 5th. Randy Korte of Highland,
Illinois visited victory lane on the first two nights with defending
UMP National Champion Rodney Melvin picking up the weekend finale.
Brian Shirley of Springfield, Illinois used his stellar efforts in the
final two events of the weekend and the fact that his nearest
circuit competitor, Dennis Erb, opted to race other events on the
weekend to wrap up the season championship for the '04 campaign.
The opening event of the weekend at Godfrey Speedway was highlighted
by a lengthy side by side duel for the point between Korte and Melvin
with Mark Faust and Matt Taylor in close pursuit. Korte could breath
easier when Melvin rode a little too high in the waning laps and got
his car up on two wheels after climbing the wall. Melvin was able to
right his machine and continue on, but faded to 4th by the race's
conclusion. Taylor and Faust finished second and third with Steve
Sheppard rounding out the top 5.
The second night of racing action at
Mt Vernon Speedway was intense and furious with the top 4 finishers
battling and all having a chance at the win. Pole Sitter Randy Korte
held on for the win with Billy Faust, Brian Shirley, and Rodney Melvin
all in close pursuit. Tom Carson rounded out the top 5 with a solid
effort on his part. With his second win of the weekend, Korte
pocketed a $500.00 bonus sponsored by Tatman's Auto Body and Tatman's
Towing who had sponsored a bonus for any driver who could win 2 of the
3 events on the weekend.
The weekend finale at Tri-State
Speedway saw Rodney Melvin grab the point on the 4th lap from local
favorite Kevin Claycomb and then hold off several challenges from
runner-up Brian Shirley in route to the victory in the caution filled
feature event. Kevin Weaver ran a solid third with Joe Morris and
Billy Faust charging from the back of the pack to round out the top
5. Shirley used his second place effort on the evening to lock up the
2004 NALMS title with two events left to be contested.
Korte drives a RaceTek Racing Engine
powered Rayburn sponsored by Mid-Continental Fuels, TMCI
Transportation, Performance Rod & Custom, and Rick's Towing. Melvin
pilots a Ricks Towing sponsored, Melvin Engines powered Rayburn. The
2004 NALMS Champion drives a Rayburn Chassis powered by Five Star
Engine Services by Gary Walters and sponsored by JAYCO Construction,
Giganti and Giganti Jewelers, Skateland South, Capital Storage, The
Dinker and BUDDA Performance.
The Northern Allstar Series has two
events left to be contested on the season, the September 24th & 25th
double header at Farmer City, Illinois. The double event originally
scheduled for September 18th and 19th at Union County Speedway has
been cancelled.

Babb Continues Kentucky Hot
Streak With NALMS Win
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Bardstown, KY (Aug 28) The Northern
Allstar Late Model Series rolled south to Bluegrass Speedway outside of
Bardstown, KY to sanction the 2nd Annual My Old Kentucky Home Shootout
on Saturday night. Thirty-six late models were on hand to try their
hand at the $5000 top prize and The Moweaqua, IL native Shannon
Babb drove his Car City and J&J Steel, Platinum Motors and RV, Watters
Auto Land sponsored Jay Dickens Motor powered CJ Rayburn car to victory.
An afternoon shower put a damper on
things to start, but the sun came out, the humidity shot up, and the
action on the track got fast and furious with Scott James setting the
high water mark in qualifications touring the track in 15.459 seconds.
Then came the task of setting the 24 car field. First up were the 4
heat races that would transfer 4 from each. Chris Carlson grabbed the
first heat in front of Bryan Barber, Dick Phillips, and Patrick
Sheltra. Heat number 2 saw Kevin Claycomb jump to the point but Shannon
Babb slid by on the 5th circuit and cruised on to the win ahead of Steve
Barnett, Claycomb, and Lee Davasier. Scott James made an impressive run
grabbing 2nd on the 5th lap out of 4 and shooting to the lead in the 1st
turn on the 6th circuit to win the 3rd heat ahead of Tim Tungate, Greg
Johnson, and Brian Shirley who grabbed the last transfer spot on the
last set of turns. Don O'Neal held off John Gill for the 4th heat
victory ahead of Mike Jewell and Jesse James Lay who battled for most of
the race. The 17th-20th starting positions would be set by the top 2
finishers in each of 2 concis with Whitney McQueary and Dustin Neat
transferring through the first and Mike England and Dennis Erb
transferring through the second. Rohn Moon and Shawn Negengard were
awarded the NALMS provisionals while Jeff Watson and Joey Daniel were
awarded the track provisionals to set the 24 car field for the 50 lap
main event.
O'Neal jumped to the early lead with
James, Carlson, and Babb battling 3 wide behind him. A lap later they
would settle out a bit with James, Carlson, Babb, and Tungate flying
around the track behind O'Neal. Babb would soon move into second and
set chase to O'Neal and James who were dicing it up for the lead several
car lengths in front of the field. 10 laps in O'Neal and James were
still battling for the point with Babb nipping at their heels 3/4ths of
a straight away ahead of Carlson. As the leaders were approaching
traffic the first caution came out on the 12th circuit when Daniel and
Sheltra tangled in turn 2. On the restart the top 3 once again pulled
away from Carlson with Gill, Tungate, and Barber battling hard for the
5th spot behind him. Babb began his move toward the front getting past
James on the 23rd lap as the leaders once again had to negotiate traffic
and then used a power move out of 2 on the 31st circuit to glide past
O'Neal. Once Babb grabbed the point he cruised to victory with O'Neal
holding onto second ahead of James, Gill, and Carlson. Barnett grabbed
two spots on the last lap to take 6th with Johnson, Jewell, Tungate, and
Erb wrapping up the top 10.
Labor Day Weekend will see the NALMS
series make a tour of Southern Illinois and Indiana with a stop at
Godfrey Speedway in Godfrey, IL on Friday September 3rd, followed by a
stop at Mount Vernon Raceway in Mount Vernon, IL a night later and the
weekend will wrap up with a Sunday stop at Tri-State Speedway in
Haubstadt, IN.

Smith Captures NALMS
Race at Kamp Motor Speedway
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Boswell, IN (Aug 21) The
Northern Allstar Late Model Series (NALMS) rolled into Kamp Motor Speedway
outside of Boswell, IN on Saturday evening for some great racing action.
Eric Smith of Bloomington, IL drove his Wall Realtors, Thies Trucking, Carri
Scharf Trucking, Accurade Towing, Powder Coating Unlimited, Paul's Auto
Body, Runion Engines, and Southdown Wrecker sponsored machine to a $2000
payday in the 30 lap main event.
With 22 cars on hand Rohn Moon set the fast
mark for the evening with a lap of 13.216. Heat race action saw Jason Feger
get by Dan Walden 6 laps in to win the first heat with Walden holding onto
second ahead of Moon, Mark Weisnicht, and Ed Woodard. Smith won the second
heat holding off a late charge by Zach Carney with Brian Shirley, Dick
Potts, and Larry Raines finishing out the top 5. Roger Long won the third
heat ahead of Michael Bradley, Duane Chamberlain, Shawn Negengard, and Jim
Laws. With a sufficient amount of cars scratching for the evening the conci
was waved and Rob Starkey, Cory Rolfe, Matt Davis, and Scott DuVall were
added to the field.
Smith converted the pole to the lead ahead
of Feger, Long, Carney, and Moon. The top 5 remained pretty much the same
until a lap 10 restart started the action rolling. Both Carney and Moon
bypassed Long on the restart and Long soon found himself further back as he
got over the cushion in turns 3 and 4 on the 13th circuit dropping him back
several more positions. Carney's solid run came to an end at the half way
mark with a tire as the leaders were approaching traffic. Feger made a
quick pass of Smith as they started to deal with the slower cars but Feger's
tour up front was short lived as Smith charged back by one lap later. A
caution cleared the track in front of the leaders and when the green flew
again Smith sped away as Bradley started moving forward grabbing the third
spot from Moon and setting his sights on the top 2. As the top 3 separated
from the pack the battle for fourth was heating up as Moon, Shirley, and
Long were mixing it up and swapping positions on a regular basis as the race
wound down. 2 laps from the finish, Feger lost air pressure in his right
rear allowing Bradley to storm by and make a last ditch effort to grab the
win. It, however, was to little to late as Smith held on for the win ahead
of Bradley, Moon, Shirley, and Long. Feger limped home to a 6th place
finish with Laws, Chamberlain, Rolfe, and Walden wrapping up the top 10.
Contingency Awards went to Rohn Moon with
the Petersen Aluminum, Bulzilla Graphics fast time award, Roger Long with
the Scott Performance Heat Race Winner Award, Eric Smith with the Dyer Rods
Pole SItter Award and the K Motion feature winner award, Jim Laws with the
PPM Hard Charger Award, and Shawn Negengard with the Wick Oil/Sunoco Hard
Luck Driver award.
NALMS racing action resumes next Saturday,
August 28th in Bardstown, KY at The Bluegrass Speedway where the stars of
NALMS will battle for a $5000 top prize.
In Modified action Jesse Cramer charged to
the point and led the whole race to pick up the feature win although he
withstood many challenges from Dale Hayes. Hayes himself barely held onto
the runner up spot as hard charging Jeff Houchens almost got him at the
stripe. Derek Losh and Bob Pohlman rounded out the top 5. Heat wins went
to Hayes, Cramer, and Arby Burton. Jarrod Warner grabbed the conci win.
In other racing action, Chuck Haga won the
survival of the fittest battle in the Super Streets as attrition dropped
many of the top runners from the competition before it ended. Keith Sweat
and Ryan Huddleston came home in 2nd and 3rd. In Street Stock action Dave
Rudisill grabbed the point on lap 3 and went onto victory. Ian Keller and
Matt Orns came home 2nd and 3rd.

Aug 15 (Danville, IL) The Northern Allstar Late
Model Series' Illinois Speedweek Tour rolled into Vermillion County Speedway
in Danville, IL Sunday evening bringing for the 5th and final round of
Speedweek action. 28 late models were on hand and in the end it was Brian
Shirley of Chatham, IL driving his JAYCO Construction, Kim's Autobody, Charlie
Parker's Diner, Riding's Plumbing, Lee's Deluxe Cleaning, Gigand & Gigand
Jewelry, Skateland South, Canham Graphics, Car Wash City, Capital Machinery,
Gebhardt Trailers, Capital Storage sponsored Gary Walters' Engine powered
Rayburn to a masterful and impressive feature win.
Don O'Neal dropped in on the final leg of the
tour after trying his hand at the North/South 100 in Kentucky earlier in the
weekend and began the evening by setting the fast mark at 13.924. 3 heats
would transfer 5 cars each to the main event with Dennis Erb Jr, taking the
point from Eric Smith early in the race and motoring away to victory. Smith,
Dan Walden, Gary May, and Brian Shirley crossed the finish line in the other
transfer spots. In the second heat Kevin Weaver and Rodney Melvin raced much
of the race side by side with Weaver gaining the edge in the end with Roger
Long, Shawn Toczek, and Michael Bradley rounding out the top 5. In the third
heat Don O'Neal got by Richie Hedrick on the third lap and continuing on to an
impressive heat win with Rohn Moon, Hedrick, Shawn Negengard, and Matt Davis
coming across 2nd through 5th. Kyle Logue, Don Hammer, and Jammie Wilson
transferred into the A-Main from the conci and Jason Feger along with Cory
Rolfe took the final two starting spot via provisional spots.
The start of the 30 lap main event saw
O'Neal, Weaver, and Erb go into turn one 3 abreast with O'Neal grabbing the
point down the back stretch. O'Neal quickly checked out on the field and
seemed to be on his way to a solid win when a lap 12 caution closed the gap
and things started getting interesting. Weaver applied the heat on the
restart but was unable to get the job done and he quickly fell into the
clutches of Erb who motored by to take the second spot on the 13th circuit.
Erb then set chase to close the 3 car length lead O'Neal had amassed and
caught him on the 18th circuit. For the next three laps O'Neal and Erb would
race side by side swapping the lead every turn until Erb was able to complete
the pass on the 21st lap. However, one lap later, as he was beginning to
separate from O'Neal, he got boxed in in traffic and O'Neal flew back by.
Meanwhile there was a man on a mission coming through the field, his name was
Brian Shirley. Shirley got by Weaver and was working on Erb for the runner up
spot 3 car lengths back when O'Neal inexplicably slid to high in turn three
and fell back to fourth 2 laps from pay dirt. Shirley then grabbed the point
and stormed away to take the feature win. Erb crossed second with Weaver and
O'Neal close in tow. Rohn Moon with an impressive showing took 5th with
Hedrick, Melvin, Bradley, Logue, and Smith wrapping up the top 10 spots.
Contingency Awards were given to Don O'Neal
for the Petersen Aluminum/Bulzilla Graphics fast time award, Kevin Weaver
grabbed the Scott Performacne Heat Race WInner Award and Dyer Rods pole sitter
award. Larry Raines grabbed the FS Fuel Consi Runner Up Award, Brian Shirley
grabbed the K Motion Feature Winner Award and the PPM Hard Charger Award, and
Duane Chamberlain was awarded the Wick Oil/Sunoco Fuels Hard Luck Driver
award.
When the smoke had cleared from the fabulous
feature event the weeks point tallies came down and The Flatland Flash, Kevin
Weaver of Gibson City, IL had come out on top and claimed the $2000 prize.
Weaver had earned 116 points with one feature win in the weeks festivities.
Kevin drives CJ Rayburn racecars powered by Hixon Racing Engines and is
sponsored by Nu-Way Transportation Services, Inc.
In the second spot 4 points back with 112
points was The One Man Band, Dennis Erb Jr of Carpentersville, IL. Erb drove
his CJ Rayburn, Petroff Towing, Petersen Aluminum, Reaber Transport sponsored
Hedrick Precision Powered race car to 2 feature wins during the week in route
to his runner up finish in the weeks points.
The 3rd place position fell to up and comer
Brian Shirley of Chatham, IL. Shirley had 108 points and 2 feature wins on
the week. Brian is sponsored by JAYCO Construction, Kim's Autobody, Charlie
Parker's Diner, Riding's Plumbing, Lee's Deluxe Cleaning, Gigand & Gigand
Jewelry, Skateland South, Canham Graphics, Car Wash City, Capital Machinery,
Gebhardt Trailers, and Capital Storage, has Gary Walters' Engine power and
drives CJ Rayburn race cars.
The 4th spot went to Rohn Moon of Greenwood,
IN. Rohn earned 89 points with his Moon Racing Power, Creonix Contract
Manufacturing and Outerwears Racing Accessories sponsored CJ Rayburn race
cars.
Due to a computer mix-up Kyle Logue was
awarded 5th place at the track but after further review it was determined that
Eric Smith of Bloomington, IL had earned the 5th place in the weeks activities
with 85 points. Eric is sponsored by Wall Realtors, Thies Trucking, Carri
Scharf Trucking, Accurade Towing, Powder Coating Unlimited, Paul's Auto Body,
Runion Engines, and Southdown Wrecker.
Since Kyle Logue had all ready been awarded
money and a trophy it was decided instead of trying to get them back the NALMS
would pay the top 6 points instead of 5. Kyle lives in Decatur, IL and drives
CJ Rayburn race cars powered by Runion Engines and is sponsored by All Service
Contracting, Save More Pharmacy, and DCR 1650 AM radio.
Illinois Speedweek has been brought to you by
Hoosier Tire Midwest and Tatman Auto Body. Drivers representing 5 different
states participated in the weeks events with drivers from Indiana, Illinois,
West Virginia, Missourri, and Michigan competing.

Erb Captures Round 4 of Illinois
Speedweek
Jeffrey A. Bayless
August 14 (Fairbury, IL) Illinois Speedweek
rolled into Fairbury IL, Saturday night with 30 Late Models on hand at the
Fairbury American Legion Speedway for round 4 of the 5 round Illinois
Speedweek tour. The One Man Band, Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, IL drove
his Petroff Towing, Petersen Aluminum, Reaber Transport sponsored Hedrick
Precision Engine powered Rayburn race car to his second victory of the week.
Don Hammer was the last car to take to the
track during time trials but that did not stop him from blistering the track
with a lap of 13.40, almost 2 tenths faster then anyone else to set fast
time. Wes Steidinger would drive away to win heat number one ahead of John
Provenzano, Cary Dehn, and Flip Shickel. Jay Sparks would win the second heat
with Joe Harlan, Mike Mullvain, and Daren Freidman capturing the other
transfer spots. The third heat got a little dicey with some bumping and
grinding with Kevin Weaver picking up the win ahead of Dennis Erb Jr., Rohn
Moon, and Duane Chamberlain. Donny Walden took the checkers and the win by a
hair in the final heat with Don Hammer riding the rim to make a late charge
ahead of Brian Shirley and Tim O'Donnell. Kyle Logue and RJ Gall would
transfer through the conci and Shawn Negengard and Eric Smith would take the
two provisional starting spots to round out the 20 car field.
Walden would jump to the early lead from the
pole but would be joined down the back stretch by 4th starting Steidinger in a
side by side duel for the top spot that would last until the 3rd lap when
Steidinger would secure the lead. 5 laps in Steidinger was riding a rocket
ship as he was motoring away from the pack as Weaver and Harlan fought over
the 2nd spot and Erb, Provezano, and Walden were engaged in a three way tussle
for the 4th spot. Speedweek point leader, Weaver, would suffer suspension
damage on the 9th circuit coming to a halt on the back stretch brining out the
races first caution. Weaver opted to stay on course after a quick stop in the
infield and fight the damaged machine to the finish trying to retain his
Speedweek point lead. More importantly back up front, Steidinger's lead was
erased and he soon found himself fending off challenges from Erb after the
racing action resumed. Steidinger was able to hold Erb at bay for most of the
duration of the race but after he lost his power steering his job became
doubly difficult. After several attempts to sneak by on the bottom, Erb moved
up the track and shot by Steidinger in the first set of turns 6 laps from pay
dirt and drove away to the feature win. Stedinger was able to muscle his
machine to a second place pay day as Harlan, Provenzano, Mullvain, Walden,
Sparks, Shirley, Hammer, and Moon rounded out the top 10.
Weaver, hanging on for a 13th place finish,
would retain the point lead albeit with a chunk of the cushion gone. Heading
into the final round tomorrow evening, only Weaver, Erb, and Shirley have a
realistic shot at the Speedweek title as Erb sits 5 back of Weaver and
Shirley 6. Smith and Moon occupy the 4th and 5th spots but are 23 and 24
points back respectively.
The nights contingency awards went to Don
Hammer with the Petersen Aluminum/Bulzilla Graphics Fast Time Award, Donny
Walden with the Scott Performance Heat Race Winner Award and Dyer Rods Feature
Pole Award, Gary May with the FS Fuel Consi Runner Up Award, Dennis Erb with
the K Motion Feature Winner Award, Shawn Negengard with the PPM Hard Charger
Award, and Junior Shickel with the Wick Oil/Sunoco Fuels Hard Luck Driver
Award.
Illinois Speedweek is sponsored by Hoosier
Tire Midwest and Tatman's Towing and will wrap up tomorrow night at Vermillion
County Speedway with the 5th and final round of the Speedweek tour.

Shirley Grabs Checkers in 3rd
Round Of Illinois Speedweek
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Aug 13 (Farmer City, IL) Farmer City Raceway a
1/4 mile dirt oval in Farmer City, IL played host to round 3 of the Northern
All-star Late Model Series' (NALMS) Illinois Speedweek Friday night with 36
cars on hand for the $2000 to win top prize. Chatham, IL native Brian
Shirley drove his JAYCO Construction, Kim's Autobody, Charlie Parker's Diner,
Riding's Plumbing, Lee's Deluxe Cleaning, Gigand & Gigand Jewelry, Skateland
South, Canham Graphics, Car Wash City, Capital Machinery, Gebhardt Trailers,
Capital Storage sponsored Gary Walters' Engine powered Rayburn to a thrilling
victory, his first NALMS feature win of the season.
Jason Feger set the fast time with a lap of
13.128 to get the evening started. 4 heats would transfer 4 drivers each to
set the first 16 positions of the 22 car main event. Heat 1 saw Kevin Weaver
grab the victory ahead of Brian Shirley, Duane Chamberlain, and Michael
Bradley. Joe Ross Jr came charging from his 3rd row starting position to win
the 2nd heat ahead of Don Hammer, Mike Mullvain, and Mike Glasscock. Eric
Smith would grab the point on the second lap of the 3rd heat and motor away to
the win ahead of Kyle Logue, Jason Feger, and Chris Dick. Dennis Erb Jr would
take the checkers in the final heat ahead of Junior Shickel, Ryan Dauber, and
Rodney Melvin. 4 more cars would transfer through the concis with Rohn Moon
and Donny Walden transferring through the first semi and Tim O'Donnell and
Cory Rolfe transferring through the second. Shawn Negengard and Jammie Wilson
would take the final two starting spots with the provisional starting spots
for the evening.
Erb, Weaver, and Ross would hit the first set
of turns in the feature 3 wide with Erb grabbing the point in the back stretch
with Weaver in the second spot and Smith and Shirley joining Ross in a 3 way
battle for third. When the caution came out on the 6th lap for Rolfe who had
spun in turn 4 it was Erb ahead of Weaver, Shirley, Logue, and Ross. Erb,
Weaver, and Shirley would have an intense battle for the next several laps
before Shirley would settle into the lead and start driving away from the
pack. However, as the laps ticked away heavy lapped traffic would allow Erb to
close the 10 car length lead Shirley had built up to make an exciting last few
laps. Erb would duck under Shirley on the last lap through the first set of
turns but Shirley, with a determined effort, would not relinquish the lead
hanging on to win by 1/2 a car at the stripe. The battle for third was just
as intense with Weaver edging a hard charging Feger at the stripe. Mullvain,
Logue, Smith, Moon, Glasscock, and Shickel rounded out the top 10 finishers.
Weaver's 3rd place run would put him on top
of the Speedweek's point standings with 2 races left. Shirley used the win to
move into second 8 points back with Smith, Erb, Moon, Randy Korte, Logue,
Chamberlain, Dauber, and Mullvain rounding out the top 10 in the standings.
Contingency Awards for the evening went to
Jason Feger with the Petersen Aluminum/Bulzilla Graphics Fast Qualifier Award,
Kevin Weaver with Scott Performance Heat Race Winner Award, Tim Stemler with
the FS Fuel Consi Runner Up Award, Dennis Erb with the Dyer Rods Feature pole
Sitter Award, Brian Shirley with the KMotion Feature Winner Award, Rohn Moon
with the PPM Hard Charger Award, and Shawn Negengard with the Wick Oil/Sunoco
Fuel Hard Luck Driver Award.
Illinois Speedweek is sponsored by Hoosier
Tire Midwest and Tatman's Towing and will travel to Fairbury American Legion
Speedway in Fairbury, IL for round 4 of the 5 round series on Saturday

Erb Claims Round 2 of Illinois
Speedweek
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Aug 12 (Canton, IL) Round 2 of the Northern
Allstar Late Model Series' Illinois Speedweek rolled through Spoonriver
Speedway, a 3/8ths mile clay oval outside of Canton, IL on Thursday evening
bringing along with them 40 of the finest Late Model competitors in the
midwest to compete for the $2000 top prize for the evening. Dennis Erb Jr. of
Carpentersville, IL piloted his Petroff Towing, Petersen Aluminum, Reaber
Transport sponsored Hedrick Precision Engine powered Rayburn race car to
victory lane to claim the second round of Speedweek competition
after mechanical trouble sidelined him early in round 1 the night before.
Randy Korte bested the field with a
qualifying lap of 13.996 to get the program started. 4 cars would transfer
from each of the 4 heats to qualify 16 of the 24 participants in the 30 lap
main event. Heat 1 was won by Kevin Weaver ahead of Bryan Collins, Wes
Steidinger, and Mike Mullvain. However, Steidinger was penalized two spots
for running over the cone moving NALMS point leader Brian Shirley into the 4th
and final transfer spot. Kyle Logue sped away to the win in heat number two
followed by Bobby Allen, Jeff Wilson, and Duane Chamberlain. Dennis Erb Jr.
claimed the 3rd heat over Randy Korte, Eric Smith, and Tim Lance. The 4th and
final heat went to Ryan Dauber who came flying from mid pack on the high side
to grab the lead with a couple of laps left ahead of Junior Shickel, Rohn
Moon, and Shawn Negengard. 3 cars would transfer from each of the 2 concis
with Wes Steidinger coming home ahead of Steve Lance and Joe Harlan. Earlier
in the conci the worst accident of the evening transpired when Brad Denny and
Jammie Wilson got together in the front stretch sending both cars spinning
collecting Robert Goodin who then smacked the inside wall and flipped up on
his side before coming back to rest on the wheels of the machine. Both Denny
and Goodin received extensive damage while WIlson was able to continue on.
Conci number 2 went to Jason Feger ahead of Jason Frankel and Tim Stemler.
The final two spots were awarded to Jammie Wilson and Robert Baumann through
provisionals to complete the 24 car field.
Dauber converted the pole to the early lead
ahead of Erb, Collins, and a 3 way battle for 4th between Korte, Weaver, and
Logue. Erb would fly by Dauber on the second circuit to take the lead before
Harlan spun in turn 4 to bring out the races only caution. Once back under
green Erb would pull out to a huge lead while Dauber, Collins, Korte, Logue,
and Weaver battled behind him. Collins would work his way into second
but began to fade as at the half way point both Korte and Dauber had overtaken
him as Erb raced away a straight away ahead. Korte would settle in to a solid
second place but had nothing for the speedy Erb as even large packs of lapped
traffic did not seem to slow his rocket ship down this night. At the checkers
it was Erb in convincing fashion ahead of Korte, Dauber, Logue, Weaver,
Collins, Smith, Moon, Shirley, and Allen.
Korte may have not had enough to claim the
victory but his second straight runner up finish put him on top of the
Illinois Speedweek point race 1 point up on Weaver, night one's winner.
Smith, Shirley, Moon, Erb, Chamberlain, Dauber, Logue, and Rodney Melvin hold
the top 10 spots in the point standings for the Speedweek Championship after 2
of 5 rounds of racing.
Contingency Awards were as follows: The
Petersen Aluminum/Bulzilla Graphics fast qualifier award went to Randy Korte,
the Scott Performance heat race winner award went to Kyle Logue, the FS Fuel
Conci Runner Up award went to Joe Ross, the KMotion Feature Win award went to
Dennis Erb Jr., the PPM hard charger award went to Jammie Wilson, and the Wick
Oil/Sunoco Fuel hard luck driver award went to Roger Long who broke during his
heat race ending his night early. The Dyer Rods feature pole award was not
awarded since Ryan Duaber did not have the proper decal on his car.
Illinois Speedweek is sponsored by Hoosier
Tire Midwest and Tatman's Towing and will travel to Farmer City Raceway in
Farmer City, IL for round 3 on Friday Evening.

Weaver Claims Opening Round of Illinois
Speedweek
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Aug 11 (Granite City, IL) The Northern Allstar Late Model Series rolled into
Tri-City Speedway on Wednesday evening for round one of the 5 round Illinois
Speedweek Tour. 26 Late Models were on hand for the $2000 to win main event
on the 1/4 mile track and The Flatland Flash, Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, IL,
took home the top prize in his Nu-Way Transportation Services, Inc sponsored,
Hixson Racing Engine powered Rayburn racecar.
Wes Steidinger began the evening by setting a new track record in qualifying
with a mark of 12.319 but that would be the highlight of his evening as he
would crash hard in his heat race after contact with Roger Long. Heat number
1 saw current NALMS point leader, Brian Shirley take the checkers ahead of
Rodney Melvin, Duane Chamberlain, Shawn Negengard, and Billy Laycock. Heat 2
went to Randy Korte, with Roger Long, Danny Haynes, Ed Dixon, and Justin
Anderson taking the other transfer spots. The third and final heat was won by
Kevin Weaver, over Eric Smith, Dennis Erb, Rohn Moon, and Michael Kloos. The
semi feature transferred 3 more to the main event with Ken Rumble leading
Sonny Conley, and Mike Hammerlee to the stripe. Provisionals were then
awarded to Wes Steidinger and Jeff Wilson to complete the 20 car field.
Shirley jumped to the front at the start in front of Korte, Weaver, and Melvin
with Weaver dropping to 4th shortly thereafter. Korte moved to the point on
the 7th circuit and stayed there until Weaver used a lap 18 restart to make
his move. Weaver made quick work of the competitors moving from 4th to 1st in
2 laps and motoring away to the victory. Korte, Shirley, Melvin, Smith, Long,
Dixon, Moon, Chamberlain, and Kloos were the other top ten finishers.
Contingency Award winners were Wes Steidinger taking the Petersen Aluminum/Bulzilla
Graphics Fast Time Award and the Wick Oil/Sunoco Fuel Hard Luck Driver Award,
Brian Shirley taking the Scott Performance Heat Race Winner Award and The Die
Rods Pole Sitter Award, Mark Gansmann took the FS Fuel Last Chance Runner Up
Award for being the first non transfer car from the race, and Mike Kloos took
home the PPM Hard Charger Award.
Illinois Speedweek is sponsored by Hoosier Tire Midwest and Tatman's Towing
and will travel to Spoon River Speedway in Canton, IL for the 2nd round of the
series on Thursday evening.
