Race Story/Summary for September 24, 2005 (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-Press Release #76)

Neat, Kramer, Wilson, and Dial Season Finale Victors at Bluegrass Speedway

Bardstown, KY-September 24- It was the 2005 Season Finale at Bluegrass Speedway and Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY scored his third Late Model feature win of the season.  Joey Kramer of Hanover, IN would win the Modified main event, while Kevin Wilson of Versailles, KY won the Sportsman feature, with Daniel Dial of Lawrenceburg, KY picking up the Street Stock main event.

The initial start of the Late Model feature would be called off after an incident on the frontchute involving Jason Keltner, Jordan Bland, Joey Tackett, Bryant Woodcock, and Mike Hawley would draw the caution, with all five able to continue.  The second attempted start would be a go with Brad Neat taking the top spot from his third starting position, with Justin Rattliff and Whitney McQueary battling for second, while Mike Jewell and Tim Tungate went fourth and fifth.  Tungate would take fourth on lap 2, while the trio of McQueary, Tungate, and Jewell would go three wide for third on lap 3.  McQueary would hang on to the third slot until Tungate began to pressure him on lap 5 and finally going to third on lap 7.  Tungate would then turn his attention to Rattliff on lap 8, only to see action slowed by a Chad Smith spin on lap 8.  The restart would see Neat still at the point, while Johnny Wheeler pressured Jewell for fifth, only to have Jeff Watson go to sixth on lap 10.  Chad Smith would spin again in turn four to bring out another caution on lap 12 and on the restart, Watson would go to fifth on Jewell on lap 13.  As Jewell and Watson went at it for fifth, Rattliff began to slowly reel in race leader to set up a battle for the top spot.  Jewell would retake the five spot from Watson on lap 17, while Rattliff had closed up on Neat's rear bumper by lap 19.  Lap 21 would see the lead duo go side by side for the lead, with Rattliff taking the spot on lap 22 in turn two, only to have the pass nulled and voided as Marty Stepp would bring out the caution when he contacted the concrete wall in turn one.  Neat and Rattliff would go one and two on the restart, while McQueary, Tungate, and Jewell went three wide for the third spot on the lap 22 restart.  Neat would hold off Rattliff to take his third win of the year at Bluegrass Speedway in the Neat Racing, Inc. owned NWN Distributing/Neat's Service Center/Tarter Gate/Stephens Pipe and Steel #41 MasterSbilt Race Cars, Cornett Race Engines powered mount.  Rattliff would take second, with McQueary holding off Jewell for third, while Tungate nursed a deflating rear tire home to fifth.  The rest of the top ten were 15th starting Jeff Watson, followed by Johnny Wheeler, David Webb, Dan Hoard, and Timmy Yeager.  Thirty Late Models were on hand, with Neat being the SpeeDecals Vinyl Graphics fast qualifier, while McQueary won the dash.  Heat wins went to Tungate and Hoard, while Stepp won the B-main.

The Modified feature event would see Robbie Gullion lead the first 11 circuits, before giving the lead up to Jason Wheatley, but all eyes would focus on 20th starting Joey Kramer as he dipped below Wheatley on the bottom side of the racing and took the lead and drove to the win in the Dee Kramer owned Hill's Historic Painting/Super Shine Auto Wash and Window Tint/Bilstein Shocks/Mom and Dad sponsored #77 entry.  Wheatley would take runner-up honors, with Gullion, Sam Murphy, Sr., and Joe Mattingly completing the top five.  Rounding out the top ten were Dion Benningfield, Joe Gray, Robbie Bennett, Matt Bex, and J.T. Ayers.  Twenty five entries saw heat race victories taken by Wheatley, Mattingly, and Gullion.

Kevin Wilson would be the man of the hour in Sportsman feature action as he drove his Hacker's Cleaning/Hoferkamp Engineering/Nealco Electric/New Look Lawn Care/ Sutherland Brothers Farms #98 Chevy Monte Carlo.  Roger Cecil would nip Nathan Wells for runner-up honors, while Jimmy Bryan and 14th starting Bo Wilson would round out the top five.  Completing the top ten were Pat Hagan, Steve Rector, John Huff, Keith Blanton, and Lois Campbell.  Fifteen entries saw heat wins go to Kevin Wilson and Roger Cecil.

Daniel Dial would pick up his first ever Street Stock feature win at Bluegrass Speedway by taking the checkered flag first in a time-shortened main event.  Dial's victory came aboard The Sunshine Shop Details and Graphics/Dial Painting/SureFire Auto/Wohner Builders #11 Chevy Impala mount.  Brian McCubbins, Daroyl Samples, Roy Skaggs, and Cotton Mattingly would complete the top five.  The second five would be Casey Bryan, Bill Wallace, Roy Bryan, Jesse Whitaker, and Terry Bartley.  Avral Thompson would set fast time, while Skaggs won the dash.  Heat wins were scored by Cotton Mattingly and Samples.

Bardstown, KY-September 17- John Gill of Mitchell, IN led all 50 laps of the 7th Annual Bluegrass 50 for the O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Arizona Sport Shirts to become the 17th different winner in 19 series events and the win by Gill also marked the 13th different Late Model feature winner at Bluegrass Speedway in 2005.  Other division winners included Bo Wilson of Bloomfield, KY in Sportsman and Bill Wallace of Shepherdsville, KY in Street Stocks.

The O'Reilly A-Main 7th Annual Bluegrass 50 saw the initial start waved off when Lee Devasier looped his mount in turn four.  The second start would be a go, with Gill taking the lead, followed by Tim Tungate, Terry English, Audie McWilliams, and Brad Neat.  English, McWilliams, and Neat would dance three wide for third on lap 3, with Neat taking fourth from McWilliams on lap 4.  Tungate would pressure Gill for the lead on lap 6, but would not be able to make a move, while English and Neat would go at it for third, with Neat taking the position on lap 8.  Meanwhile, McWiliams and Bryan Barber would settle into a battle for fifth on lap 10, with McWilliams securing the position again on lap 12.  By lap 13, Gill was beginning to put distance between himself and the rest of the pack, while Barber would work around McWilliams for fifth on lap 14.  Neat would then pressure Tungate for second as the caution flag would be displayed for a slowed Cody Mahoney in turn two.  The Delaware double file restart would see Tungate and Neat go at for second again, with Neat taking the runner-up slot on lap 16.  Mike Jewell would start to get racy at this point and would mount a charge on fifth place runner Bryan Barber on lap 18.  Neat would show his hand to Gill on lap 19 for the lead, but would be unable to complete a turn two attempted pass, while Jewell continued to battle with Barber for fifth, finally gaining the five slot on lap 22.  As the halfway was shown to the field, Gill continued to hold a slim lead on Neat, with Tungate, English, and Jewell third through fifth.  Caution would wave again on lap 28 as ninth place running Mike Marlar stopped on the backchute and would be done for the evening.  The restart would see Jewell go the fourth position, while McWilliams would also roll back into the top five.  Caution would wave again on lap 31 as Devasier would see his mount pointed in the wrong direction in turn two.  This Delaware double file restart would see Neat and Tungate mix it up for second, with Tungate taking the spot on lap 32.  The pair would continue to battle for the runner-up slot for the next five circuits, allowing race leader Gill to motor away from the pair a bit.  Neat would go back to second on lap 41 with a turn three pass of Tungate, while Jewell would close on Tungate as well and look for third on lap 43.  Tungate would go back around Neat in turn three as the field completed lap 45.  Disaster would strike for Neat as his mount encountered mechanical problems just two laps shy of the finish and would stop on the track in turn two, setting up a two lap shootout to the finish.  Gill would again motor away from the Tungate and Jewell, with Gill taking his second Bluegrass 50 win in the Jeff and Eddie Harrod owned Harrod Brothers Farms/Perry's Auto Sales/Central Painting #75 Rocket Chassis, Bullock Race Engines powered mount shod with Hoosier Tires.  Jewell would make a last lap pass of Tungate for second, while Terry English and Bryan Barber would complete the top five.  Rounding out the top ten were Tyrel Todd, Audie McWilliams, Rick Corbin, 21st starting Whitney McQueary, and Chris Combs.  Fifty entries were on hand, with Brad Neat scoring the Racing Optics fast time award with a 15.239 second qualifying lap.  VP Racing Fuel Makin' Power heat race wins went to Audie McWilliams, Tim Tungate, Terry English, and John Gill.  B-main were won by Jeff Watson and Timmy Yeager.  Series provisional starters were Whitney McQueary and Wayne Chinn, while Joey Daniel and Johnny Wheeler were track provisional starters.

Five time and defending Sportsman track champion Bo Wilson came out of retirement with a bang and he captured the 15 lap feature event for this class in his first night back behind the wheel in his Wilson's Wrecker Service/Bart's Mart/New Look Lawn Care sponsored #83 Chevy Monte Carlo, AMS Race Engines powered entry.  Pat Hagan would finish a car length back of Wilson in second, with Kevin Wilson taking third, followed by Jimmy Bryan and Mike Bailey.  The remainder of the top ten would be Steve Rector, Sam Huffer, Kevin Long, Roger Cecil, and Jenna Chesser.  Eleven entries would see Bo Wilson also set fast time, while Bryan won the dash, with Cecil winning the heat.

The 12 lap Street Stock feature would go caution free and see Bill Wallace score his first career Bluegrass Speedway win in the Bobby Wallace owned Total Truck Parts/Cox's Creek Tire and Brake/Mary Kay Cosmetics #38 Oldsmobile entry.  The Robbie Settles entry would be disqualified for not crossing the scales, moving Avral Thompson to second, followed by Daroyl Samples, Casey Bryan, and Shane Litton.  Rounding out the top ten were Roy Skaggs, Cam Taylor, Willie Edelen, Jesse Key, and Doug Estep.  Eighteen entries saw heat wins scored by Casey Bryan and Estep.

Bloomquist Blasts from 15th to Win Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Event at Bluegrass Speedway

BARDSTOWN, KY—Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Racer Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN roared from his 15th starting position taking the lead from Donnie Moran and led the final 22 laps of the 5th Annual Bluegrass Classic for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on Saturday Night at the Bluegrass Speedway.  The 41 year old Bloomquist became the 16th different event winner in '05 on the series tour as he pocketed $10,000 for his victory.  Bloomquist was behind the wheel of his own Bloomquist Race Cars designed chassis which is sponsored by Miller Brothers Coal, Hawkeye Trucking and All Star Performance.  John Gill of Mitchell, IN had a strong finish coming from the 10th starting spot to take second in the Harrod Farms/Central Painting/Rocket Grand Prix.  Third place was 16th starter Earl Pearson, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL in the Lucas Oil Products/Dunn Benson Ford/Larry Wallace Racing Engines/MasterSbilt Ford Taurus.  Completing the top five was polesitter Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA in the Daufeldt Transport/Pro Power Engines/MasterSbilt Monte Carlo and current series points leader Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN in the A1 Auto Salvage/Jay Dickens Racing Engines/MasterSbilt Monte Carlo.  A total of 53 cars were on hand for the event which was also a tribute to the late David Speer a longtime racer from the state of Kentucky who passed away last November.  Scott Bloomquist gave his winning trophy to Brenda Speer, Mr. Speer's widow.

When the green flag waved for the 60 lap main event which saw Brian Birkhofer and Donnie Moran start on the front row but it was first time Arkansas visitor, Jeff Taylor grabbing the headlines as he raced from his fourth starting spot and made his presence known early in the race that he would be a force to be reckoned with.  Taylor would get by both Birkhofer and Moran on the opening lap taking the lead on a track he had never seen before.  Taylor would pull away from Moran who was running in second and third place competitor, Birkhofer.  A forced spin by Matt Miller on lap two would bring out the first caution of the race.  With the races lined back up the Delaware double file restart would be in order with Taylor out in front and Moran and Birkhofer lined up side by side.  Taylor would sprint away from those two drivers again as he quickly made his way around the well prepared 1/2 mile oval opening up a sizable lead.  By the 10th circuit Taylor would be seven car lengths ahead of the field in a dominating performance so far.  Birkhofer who had gotten by Moran on lap three was running in second followed now by Darren Miller, who was on the move.

With 15 laps scored it was Taylor on the point with now a ten car length advantage over Birkhofer.  D. Miller was still in third with Moran and Steve Francis in the top five.  At this point in the race Taylor would start to encounter some heavy traffic as he had picked up the back of the field.  Taylor's sizable lead was big enough that Birkhofer even in traffic could not catch up to him.  Taylor would slice through traffic making daring moves and coming out unscathed until a fateful lap 27 would lead to his undoing.  With a large lead Taylor would enter turn four with Jimmy Owens sitting in the groove he was running, Taylor tried to avoid the stopped Owens but he clipped Owens with the right front of his race car causing a flat tire and other damage.  Taylor would go pitside in the infield and his crew changed the tire, but enough damage was done to where Taylor did not like how his car would handle and he came back in calling it a night after such a superb run.

Birkhofer then would inherit the lead with Miller, Moran and Francis behind him on the double file restart.  When the green came out to restart the race D. Miller would see a right front tire go down and he would be passed by several cars as he eventually would stop on the track bringing out another caution flag.  On the restart Birkhofer would still be on the point with Moran now in second followed by 15th starting, Scott Bloomquist who had quietly made his way to the front.  Don O'Neal was running fourth with Francis in fifth.  When the green flew again Moran would go side by side with Birkhofer for two circuits before finally clearing him and taking over the lead on lap 30.  Bloomquist would then pick up the pace again getting by Birkhofer for second as the trio of Moran, Bloomquist and Birkhofer were now putting on quite a show for the large crowd in attendance racing with inches of each other.  Bloomquist would pull alongside Moran and for the next six laps those two would fight tooth and nail for the lead.  With seven World 100 wins between them those two know when the pressure is on and they performed flawlessly battling it out lap after lap for the lead.

Bloomquist was able to clear Moran and take over the lead on lap 39 after the breathtaking duel with Moran.  Birkhofer would get back into the thick of things as he would get by Moran for second on lap 41.   With 15 to go Bloomquist was holding the advantage with Birkhofer, Moran, 10th starting, John Gill and O'Neal trying to track him down.  An incredible battle for third would see Moran, Gill and O'Neal go three wide on several occasions with Gill getting the spot on lap 48.   As the laps were winding down Bloomquist was strong holding a four car length advantage over the pack of hot pursuers.  Moran who started to slip back because he had a tire going down would slow to a stop in turn three on lap 53.  With seven to go the stage was now set for the finish.  Bloomquist would be in front on the double file restart with Birkhofer, Gill, Earl Pearson, Jr. up from 16th and O'Neal all trying to steal away a win from him.  When chief starter Brian Axsom dropped the green a seven lap shootout would take place, not for the lead but for second place.  Bloomquist would continue to be firmly in control of the race but action for second through fifth would be amazing.  Birkhofer, Gill, Pearson and O'Neal would go at like they were racing for the lead.  Gill would race to second with three laps to go as he Birkhofer, Pearson and O'Neal would slug it out until the checkers fell.  Pearson was trying very hard up against the retaining wall to gain some spots and on the final lap he was able to pass Birkhofer on the outside for third place.   Birkhofer would finish fourth followed closely by O'Neal.

In victory circle, Bloomquist was happy over his win.  "The track tonight was great, you could pass on it and we all had a great battle out there, this is a nice facility and the way the track was prepared tonight that's the way it should be everywhere, I think we put on a great show for the fans tonight."  "We have fought some engine issues this year, but I believe we are on the right track to finish strong the rest of the season and we look forward to the challenge."

Completing the top ten were Francis, Darren Miller, Matt Miller, Greg Johnson and Mike Marlar.

In preliminary events Earl Pearson, Jr. was the Oval Craft Racing Aluminum Designs Fast Qual
