Season Champions Crowned at Lincoln

By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (Sept. 4) – Lincoln Speedway’s second season drew to a close with the crowning of five new champions and a near-record 142 cars pit side at the Logan County Fairgrounds facility.

Springfield’s Korey Weyent held off Middletown rookie Bret Tripplett in the title chase after the 20-lapper. Meanwhile, Mitch Wissmiller and Derek O’Dell dueled for the win. Eleventh-starting O’Dell ran down the pole-winning Wissmiller in the race’s late stages and took the top spot, before a caution negated the pass. Wissmiller held on over the final two circuits to score his second win of 2005. Chad Branson, Weyent, and Jeremy Standridge followed the lead duo across the line.

Going into the 15-lap Street Stock finale, one point separated Terry Miller from Larry Russell, Jr. and Chris Tackett. Miller led early on before problems sidelined the Lincoln competitor. That allowed Russell, Jr. to cruise to the win and the title over Tackett, Kevin Skelton, Brian Mileham, and Justin Durbin.

Defending UMP Modified champion Brian Lynn did what he had to do by holding off Roben Huffman throughout the 20-lap main. Jeff Leka, Kovski, and Doug Hobbs rounded out the top five. By virtue of his fourth place finish, Springfield’s Kelly Kovski was able to cling to the championship by just four markers.

Steve Lance, Jr. blasted to the front and racked up his sixth win of 2005 in the Late Model feature. The Cuba, Ill. driver bested a charging Shane Allen, Chad Pratt, Gary Shields, and Mike Fannin. Lance, Jr. also claimed the track title over Allen.

                J. R. Eskew found victory lane for the thirteenth time of the season in Wild Thing action. Eskew held off Damon Jones in the 15-lapper. Matt Turley, Bob Sanders, and Rick Lowe completed the top five.

The final B&H Promotions event of 2005 will take place next Saturday, September 10th. The Demolition Derby competitors will take center stage on the front straightaway of the Logan County Fairgrounds ¼-mile.
