Jimmy
Owens Wins O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series 8th Annual
Bluegrass 50 at Bluegrass Speedway
Bardstown, KY-September 16- Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN would survive a last lap
scare to pick up the 8th Annual Bluegrass 50 for the O'Reilly NARA Battle of the
Bluegrass DirtCar Series on Saturday night at Bluegrass Speedway. Other feature
winners for the evening included Pat Hagan of New Haven, KY in Sportsman and
Darrell Biven of Bardstown, KY would pick up his first ever Street Stock feature
win.
Ben Adkins and Timmy Yeager would roll the 23 car starting field to the green in
the 50 lap, $5,000 to win 8th Annual Bluegrass 50, with Yeager taking the lead,
followed by Adkins, Jimmy Owens, Dustin Neat, and Greg Johnson. Adkins and
Owens would immediately duel for the runner-up slot, with Owens taking second on
lap 3, with Johnson taking fourth from Neat. Johnson would set his sights on
Owens for second, getting by Adkins for third on lap 5 and taking second on lap
6, as Doug Horton made his way into the top five on the same circuit. Johnson
would close on Yeager on the pair would race side-by-side on lap 8, only to see
the caution flag wave to slow the action as Larry Greer and Dan Deaton would
spin in turn four. Johnson would scoot by Yeager on the restart, only to have
the pass nulled as the caution came right back out for debris in turn one. Back
under green, Tim Tungate would work his way past Horton and Adkins and take
fifth, but the stage was now set at the point for three straight laps of three
wide action between Yeager, Johnson, and Owens until lap 15, when Yeager resumed
control, with Owens nipping at his heels. With all this going on at the front,
Tungate and Adkins were battling side by side for fifth. Lap 17 would see Owens
deal Johnson a slidejob pass off of turn two to take the lead, with Johnson
inching back ahead on lap 18, only to have Owens resume the top spot on lap 19,
as the front trio began working slower traffic, as Tungate took control of
fifth. The front pair of Owens and Johnson began working heavy traffic on lap
23, as Neat and Tungate slipped past Yeager on lap 27, with Yeager working by
around Tungate on lap 28, while Brad Neat would make his way into the top five
one circuit later by going from sixth to fourth past Tungate and Yeager off of
turn two. Caution would fly again on lap 30 as Scotty Earl would loop his mount
in turn four and fifth place Tungate would pit under the caution with a flat
right rear tire. On the restart, Johnson would look under Owens for the lead,
but could not make the pass, while Brad Neat would drive past brother Dustin
Neat to take third. Caution waved again on lap 33 for Chris Combs, who had
worked his way from 16th to 7th, for a flat right rear tire. The restart would
be a no-go as Combs would spin his entry in turn four before another complete
lap was scored. This restart would see Owens and Johnson go at it wheel to
wheel for the next three circuits, before Owens resumed control of the lead on
lap 37. Everyone seemed to ride a bit for the next five laps and get set for
the final laps, as Brad Neat closed up on Johnson for second in slower traffic
on lap 43, and the duo would go side by side on lap 44, before Johnson claimed
the spot on lap 45, while Horton and Adkins went at it for fifth. Johnson would
reel Owens in over the next four circuits and as the duo raced down the
backchute on the final lap, Johnson would fire a wicked slidejob on Owens and
take the lead momentarily in turn four, only to see Owens grab a handful of
steering wheel and drive back beneath Johnson and beat him to the checkered flag
by about a half-car length to claim the win in the Jeff and Eddie Harrod owned
Harrod Farms/ Red Line Oil/Central Painting/Perry's Auto Sales/PPM Racing
Products/Hoosier Tire sponsored #20 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, Cornett Race Engines
powered entry. Johnson would take runner-up honors, with Brad Neat, Dustin
Neat, and Ben Adkins completing the top five. The remainder of the top ten
would be Horton, Jason Keltner, 21st starting Bobby Wolter, Jr., Tim Tungate,
who recovered from a lap 33 flat tire, and Jeff Watson. Twenty-nine entries saw
Jimmy Owens be the Racing Optics fast qualifier at 15.247 seconds. The Mason
Racin' heat races were won by Greg Johnson and Timmy Yeager, while Ben Adkins
won the Arizona Sport Shirts heat. Chris Combs would be victorious in the
Design 500 B-main, with series provisional starting spots going to Bobby Wolter,
Jr. and Dan Deaton, while Joey Daniel was the track provisional.
In the 15 lap Sportsman feature, Pat Hagan would survive a mid-race scare in
lapped traffic that took out then second place running Bobby Mattingly and hold
division points leader Kevin Wilson to claim his second feature win of the
season at Bluegrass Speedway in the Billy Holbert owned New Haven Car Wash/New
Haven NAPA/New Haven Quik Stop sponsored #88 mount. Kevin Wilson would take
second, Nathan Wells, Roger Cecil, and Sam Huffer rounding out the top five.
Completing the top ten were Jimmy Bryan, Bo Wilson, Buddy Pate, Lois Campbell,
and Todd Huffer. Fifteen entries saw Hagan top time trials and win the dash,
while Wells won the heat.
The 12 lap Street Stock feature would see Darrell Biven snag his first ever
career Street Stock feature win as he would lead the entire distance and see the
checkered flag first behind the wheel of his B.C. Auto/DirtWorks Trucking/Bypass
Jewelry/Lee Auto Salvage sponsored #71 unit. Daroyl Samples would drive home in
second, as Roy Skaggs, Brian McCubbins, and Timmy Glazer would complete the top
five. Avral Thompson would head up the second five at the finish, followed by
Pat Cranmer, Casey Bryan, Terry Bartley, and Terry Greenwell. Twenty entries
drew for heat race starting assignments, with those events won by Biven and
Robbie Settles.
