The Moweaqua Missile Blast’s The Competition at Kamp
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Boswell, IN (June 17, 2006) Round three of Dirt Motorsport’s UMP Summernationals came to Boswell, IN and the 3/8th mile high banked Kentucky red clay covered speedplant known as Kamp Motor Speedway with 40 hot shoes in tow to try their hand at the $10,000 first place money. During the ’05 version of the Summernationals Moweaqua, IL native Shannon Babb was the man to beat wrapping up a record 15 victories during the tour. Through the first 2 events of ’06 The Moweaqua Missile, although a solid contender each night, had not displayed the dominating style he had possessed the year before. That was until the tour hit Kamp Motor Speedway when Babb served notice that he was back with a dominating flag to flag victory in his Billy Moyer owned RaceTek powered, Car City, Watters Autoland, J & J Steel, Platinum Motors, and Petroff Towing sponsored CJ Rayburn race car.
The heat races saw Billy Drake beat Eddie Leviner and Mike Mataragas, Dennis Erb Jr. beat Rodney Melvin and Rick Aukland, Shannon Babb hold off Randy Korte and Jason Feger, and Jeep VanWormer take the checkers over Frank Heckenast Jr. and Wendell Wallace. Shawn Negengard, Patrick Sheltra, and George Scheffler transferred through the first conci while Kevin Weaver, Mike Marlar, and Dan Walden made the show through the second. The heat winners dash to determine the pole sitter was won by Babb over Drake as Erb and VanWormer both exited the track after getting tangled in turn 2 on the first lap. Steve Hillard, Steve Sheppard, Jim Laws, and Chuck Haga were all added as provisionals to set the 22 car field.
When the fireworks subsided in the turn 3 sky they began on the track as Shannon Babb took to the rim and shook off an early challenge from Billy Drake before taking off on a blistering pace that saw him lap all the way to third place in the 40 lap caution free event. Babb appeared to be on rails as he caught the back markers by the 8th lap and masterfully weaved his way in and out of traffic taking the checkers over ½ a track ahead of runner-up Billy Drake. Wendell Wallace improved from his outside 6th row starting spot to take third, the only other car on the lead lap. VanWormer, Feger, Erb, Korte, Melvin, Weaver and Marlar rounded out the top ten all one lap in arrears. “It’s amazing what a little water and effort can do to a race track, it’s awesome to be able to move around on a track like that” Babb remarked voicing his displeasure over some not so great prepared surfaces he has encountered recently. He then continued stating “We gave up a couple by getting off of the beating path but we are not going to let that happen again as we are back on the straight and narrow.”
Round 4 of the series is scheduled for Sunday night at Tri State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN located on US 41 in Southern Indiana.

Korte Claims 3rd Consecutive NALMS Win
Jeffrey A. Bayless
Boswell, IN (April 22, 2005) The Northern Allstar Late Model Series (NALMS) made it’s first stop in the state of Indiana for the 2006 season with a swing through Boswell, IN and the 3/8ths mile speedplant located there known as Kamp Motor Speedway. When it was all said and done “King Kong “ Randy Korte of Highland, IL topped the 41 entrants claiming his 3rd consecutive NALMS win and his 4th consecutive top 2 finish of the 4 race old 2006 NALMS tour. Korte drives a Dargie Engines powered Rocket Chassis and is sponsored by Mid-Continental Fuels, Seubert Calf Ranches, and Banshee Graphics.
The preliminaries began with fast qualifier Kevin Weaver taking the first heat with a comfortable 8 car length cushion over Dennis Erb Jr. and Kerby Damery. The fourth transfer spot went to late arriving Steve Sheppard who came from the tail of the heat. In the second heat Brian Shirley made a lap 7 pass to claim the win over early leader Chuck Haga with Guy Volk and Wes Steidinger claiming the other two transfer spots. John Provenzano held off an early challenge from Ryan Dauber to claim the lead in the third heat and went on to lead a flag to flag victory over Richie Hedrick, Dauber, and Dan Walden. In the 4th and final heat, Korte cruised to a comfortable win with Eric Smith, Frank Heckenast Jr., and Rusty Schlenk rounding out the top 4. The first semi saw Jim Laws transfer with Jim Felker Jr. coming from mid-pack to claim the other transfer spot. Jason Feger and Donnie Walden came through the second semi with Tim Manville and Eric Kwasigroh being added to the field as series provisionals to complete the 22 car field.
At the drop of the green flag Korte powered to the lead from his outside front row starting spot with Weaver, Provenzano, Shirley, and Erb in tow with Korte and Weaver separating from the field before a lap 5 caution for Steidinger slowed the pace and closed the field up. 5 laps further into the action Korte and Weaver were reeling in the back markers with Provenzano sitting alone in third and Shirley and Erb mixing it up for 4th with Hedrick waiting to pounce if either made a mistake. A lap 14 caution set-up what would become a repeat cycle as the front runners would begin to reach the back of the pack and things would be looking to get interesting before another car would encounter problems and bring out a caution setting up a clean track for the restart. In the end it was Korte coming home 5car lengths up on Weaver, Provenzano, Hedrick, and Shirley. In victory lane, Korte exclaimed “I hope this year never comes to an end, I’ve had a fantastic start to this year”, remarking on his season that has seen him since March 18th rack up a very impressive 7 wins and 3 runner-up finishes in the 10 races he has participated in.
