Ponderosa Speedway ’06 Track Champions Honored at Awards Banquet
Junction City, KY-February 18, 2007- It was a snowy evening of fellowship, food, discussion, and celebration as Ponderosa Speedway track promoter Larry Yantz and his staff celebrated the top drivers at “The Pond” for the 2006 racing season this past Saturday at the National Guard Armory in Danville, KY.
The Modified division would be honored first as former go-kart racer Shane McKinney of Harrodsburg, KY laid claim to the 2006 Modified track championship. The championship came in McKinney’s first full season of stock car competition and also makes McKinney the youngest track champion in the history of Ponderosa Speedway at 15 years of age. Ricky Lane of Harrodsburg, KY would finish second in the Modified final track points, with Victor Lee of Stanford, KY (3 feature wins), Jeff Johnson of Junction City, KY, and Clarence Belcher of Junction City, KY finishing third through fifth in the final points. Completing the top ten were Zane Morgan of Junction City, KY, Dustin Linville of Lancaster, KY (2 feature wins), Dennis Barton of Corbin, KY, Tommy Bailey of Corbin, KY (1 feature win), and Cale Coffey of Tyner, KY (1 feature win). The Modified division saw 63 different racers earn points for the season, with 10 different drivers getting a feature race checkered flag. Those claiming feature wins included Jay Mobley, Coffey, Joey Kramer, Victor Lee, Arnold Adams, Shawn Tolson, Bailey, David McWilliams, Linville, and Benji Lee.
The Late Model division would see Bobby Carrier, Jr. of Harrodsburg, KY claim his second consecutive top championship in the top division featured weekly at “The Pond”. It would also mark the fourth time that the second generation driver has been the Late Model track champion at the 3/8 D-shaped clay oval. Carrier, Jr. would claim one feature win on his way to winning the track title, but of more importance, this driver would win a more important battle by defeating throat cancer during the final third of the race campaign. Jeff Watson of Campbellsville, KY would score one feature win on his way to claiming runner-up honors in the final Late Model track points. Victor Lee of Stanford, KY would be third, Donald Rayborn of Middleburg, KY fourth, and Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY (2 feature wins) would complete the top five in final class points. Rounding out the top ten were Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN, Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY (2 feature wins), Bobby Wolter, Jr. of Lexington, KY, Buzz Williams of Junction City, KY, and Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY (2 feature wins). There were 77 different drivers that earned points in the Late Model division for the season, with a total of 13 different winners, making the Late Model class as competitive as any at any track around. Those racers that scored Late Model wins during the year included Joey Daniel, Larry Gray, Michael Chilton, Scotty Earl, Wheeler, Watson, Jimmy Owens, Rattliff, Carrier, Jr., Chris Combs, Neat, Greg Johnson, and Aaron Hatton.
The Bomber division would see Peydon Pelphrey of Winchester, KY win a third of the feature events contested for the class in 2006 as Pelphrey would score a total of 7 feature wins for the year at “The Pond”, more than any other driver at the track for the season. The track championship also marks the first track title for this driver at Ponderosa Speedway. Shelburn Meeks, Jr. of Liberty, KY would garner championship runner-up honors, with Butch Phillips of Stanford, KY, John Hansel of Versailles, KY, and Kevin Edwards of Versailles, KY taking third through fifth in the final points tally for the division. Logan Whitis of Hustonville, KY, Richard Price of Crab Orchard, KY, Ray Phillips of Lancaster, KY, Logan Preston of Berea, KY (1 feature win), and Gary Thompson of Danville, KY (4 feature wins) would finish sixth through tenth in final Bomber track points. A total of 42 different drivers earned points in Bomber competition in 2006, with 6 different drivers taking checkered flags. The drivers on that winner’s list would include Pelphrey, Thompson, Rick King, Preston, Keith Decker, and Darrell Gaddis.
The Chevette division would have a repeat champion as Randy Maybrier of Waynesburg, KY would make it three straight track championship in the four cylinder class at “The Pond”, with previous championships in 2004 and 2005. Maybrier would total more track points than any driver in 2006 at Ponderosa Speedway and scored three feature event wins on his way to this third straight track title. Youngster Clayton Devine of Harrodsburg, KY would claim track championship runner-up honors with his second place points finish and also score 1 feature win. Completing the top five were Joseph Lyons of Danville, KY, Chris Schlosser of Harrodsburg, KY, and Keith Lear of Lancaster, KY. Rounding out the top ten were Robert Luttrell, Jr. of Dunnville, KY, Dylan Preston of Burgin, KY, Billy Jewell of Springfield, KY, Chase McWhorter of Stanford, KY (6 feature wins), and Shawn Bardin of Columbia, KY (2 feature wins). There were 36 different racers that earned track points for 2006, with 7 different feature winners. Those winners were Bardin, Eddie Stewart, McWhorter, Ron Dodson, Jerry Pyles, Maybrier, and Devine.
Other special awards for the evening included large blown-up framed photos of all four track champion courtesy of Strader Motorsports Photography in Corbin, KY. Special appreciation awards were presented to Wayne and Ann Bowen with Wayne Bowen Racing Supply and to Joe Denny for their faithful support of Ponderosa Speedway.
It was announced that new dirt will also be going down as soon as the weather will allow. The tentative open practice date is set for March 11, with the season opener for Sportsman, Chevettes, and Frontrunners set for March 18. All dates listed are tentative and depend on weather cooperation in getting the new track surface put down. A future press release will confirm open practice and opening dates if the above listed dates change.

NEXT RACE: Season Finished
Kramer
Captures 2nd Annual NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Modified Series Pepsi Showdown
at Ponderosa Speedway
Junction City, KY-October 6- It was the final night of action for the 2006
racing season at Ponderosa Speedway at the NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Modified
Series would be in town and current series points leader and defending champion
Joey Kramer of Hanover, IN would claim the $1,500 payday and his second
consecutive win in the event. Other feature winners for the night included
Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY in Late Models, Shawn Bardin of Columbia, KY in
Chevettes, and Darrell Gaddis of Junction City, KY in Bombers.
The NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Modified Series O'Reilly A-Main would see
Victor Lee take the lead at the drop of the green flag, with Jimmy Payne, Joey
Kramer, Russ Gabbert, and Brandon Green giving chase. Kramer would challenge
Payne for second on laps 2 through 5, but could not make the pass, as Lee opened
a bit of a lead and would start lapping slower cars on lap 6. On that same
circuit, Kramer would slip past Payne for the runner-up slot and would start to
slowly reel in race leader Lee. Lap 10 would see the first caution of the race
as Dustin Linville and Jay Mobley would spin in turn two. The lap 10 restart
would see the demise of race leader Lee as he slowed with mechanical problems on
his mount and would pull pitside for the evening. This turn of events would
place Kramer on the point, with Payne, Gabbert, Green, and Miguel Coffey making
up the rest of the top five. The front five would remain the same until the
caution flag again slowed the action on lap 16 as Jay Mobley, Zane Morgan, and
J.T. Ayers would tangle in turn two. The restart would see Kramer and Payne go
at it for the top spot, with this pair putting a bit of distance between
themselves and third place running Gabbert. The caution waved on lap 21 to slow
the pace as J.T. Ayers would loop his entry in turn four. The restart would
only get one more circuit scored as the caution would appear for debris. During
the caution period, second place Payne would pull to the hot pit area with a
flat left tire, get fresh rubber, and return to action. This restart would be
voided when Scotty Kincaid would spin in turn four before a complete lap was
scored. This would be the final restart and Kramer would roll away from the
pack and claim the victory in the D. Kramer owned Wild's Restoration
Service/Hill's Historic Painting/Super Shine Auto Detail and Window Tint/PBM
Performance Products/Bilstein Shocks sponsored #77 Lightning Chassis, Kramer
Race Engine powered entry. Gabbert would take second, while Brandon Green
slowed on the final lap with mechanical issues, allowing Coffey, 16th starter
Don Adams, and 17th starter Kelly Warren to race past to complete the top five.
Dustin Linville would recover from his lap 9 spin to head up the second five at
the finish, trailed by Green, Shon Flanery, 19th starter Dennis Barton, and Jay
Mobley. Twenty-seven entries would see Kramer claim the Racing Optics Fast Time
award with a 14.539 second qualifying lap. Heat wins were taken by Gabbert,
Victor Lee, and Payne, while Don Adams won the B-Main. Series provisional
starting spots went to Dennis Barton and Larry Moreland, while track provisional
starters were Shane McKinney and Ricky Lane.
The Late Model division would also be in action in a $1,500 to win main event
and the initial start of this 25 lap affair would see the caution appear
immediately as Johnny Wheeler, Mike Jewell, and Jeff Watson would tangle in turn
two, with Jewell pull pitside with a flat right front tire and not returning.
Once underway, Greg Johnson jumped to the race lead, followed by Tim Tungate,
Dustin Neat, Bobby Wolter, Jr., and Johnny Wheeler. Scott Randoph would draw
the caution flag on lap 3 after slowing in turn four and rolling pitside for the
evening. One more circuit would be completed when fourth place runner Bobby
Wolter, Jr. would spin in turn four. Wolter, Jr. would repeat the spin-out one
lap later to draw another caution, with second place running Tungate pulling in
with a flat right rear tire, but would change it and return to action. Back
under green, Johnson would hold the lead, with Neat, Victor Lee, Johnny Wheeler,
and Anthony Adams in pursuit. Lap 7 would see Wheeler and Adams battle for
fifth, with Wheeler slowing and pulling off one lap later, moving D.J. Wells
into the top five. Debris would bring another caution on lap 10. On this
restart, Johnson would continue his rapid pace up front, while Lee and Adams
went at it for third. Meanwhile, Tungate was charging back toward the front of
the field and would pass Wells for fifth on lap 14 and charge past Adams for
fourth one trip later. Chris Ruble would slow in turn two to bring out the next
yellow flag, with third place running Lee slowly rolling pitside, with
mechanical woes ending his night. The restart would only see one more green
flag lap completed when Donald Rayborn pulled up slow on the backchute and would
be done for the night. This restart would see Tungate pressure Neat for
runner-up honors, while Wolter, Jr. had worked his way back to fifth by lap 19.
Neat would start to reel in Johnson as Johnson would slow as his right rear tire
started going flat. Neat would take the lead off of turn two as the field
worked lap 24 and lead the final two laps to pick up his second win of '06 at
"The Pond" in his Neat Brothers Distributing/NWN Distributing/ Neat's Service
Center #25 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars Pontiac Grand Prix, Estes Race Engines powered
mount. Adams would slip back around Tungate to claim second, while Wolter, Jr.
and Wells completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Jerry
Rutherford, Johnson, Peydon Pelphrey, Jake Henry, and Chris Ruble.
Twenty-entries saw Tim Tungate establish a new single lap Late Model track
record with a time of 12.761 seconds in time trials and also win the dash. Heat
wins went to Jeff Watson, and Victor Lee.
The Chevette division would have a 20 lap/$500 to win special feature event and
early race leader Eddie Stewart would get involved in an incident with slower
traffic and turn the lead over to Shawn Bardin, but Stewart would charge from
the rear of the pack, but would come up one spot shy as Bardin, who on opening
night, would win again at the season finale aboard his Grider Stables/Burton
Real Estate/Barger Insurance/Hoss Toter Pop Rivets supported #21x mount.
Stewart would claim second, followed by Shane Irvin, Goble Bertram, and Robert
Luttrell, Jr. Completing the top ten were Clayton Devine, Eric Reynolds,
Brandon Bardin, Tony Antrobus, and Chris Schlosser. Eighteen entries saw
Stewart as fast qualifier, while Randy Maybrier won the dash, with heat
victories falling to Brandon Bardin and David Murphy.
The Bomber main event would see Darrell Gaddis lead all 15 laps to pick up
second straight feature win at Ponderosa behind the wheel of his Gaddis
Farms/The Muffler Shop/B and E Builders/Lightning Valley Motorsports
Park/Hometown Auto Parts/ Brute Force Race Engines #14. Keith Decker, Logan
Whitis, Travis Preston, and Kevin Edwards rounded out the top five. Shelburn
Meeks, Jr. headed up the second five, followed by Richard Price, C.W. Murphy,
Ray Phillips, and Gary Hebrock, Jr. Gaddis was also fast qualifier and won the
dash, while Hebrock, Jr. won the heat.
