RACING LOSES ED SHECKLER, A TRUE FRIEND OF THE SPORT
MONMOUTH, Ill. (Dec. 6) -- The staff, family, friends, racers and sponsors of the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS), United States Racing Association (USRA) and RL Promotions wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Ed Sheckler.
Ed passed away at his home in Monmouth, Ill., early Tuesday morning from complications of liver cancer.
Ed aided in the development of the USMS, which was started by his son, Doug, in 1994. Since then, Ed has played an instrumental part in the success of the USRA, Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., the Mountain Dew Bloomfield (Iowa) Speedway and the USMTS. Ed's tireless efforts have made the annual USMTS stop at the Knoxville (Ill.) Fairgrounds one of the biggest and most successful events on the calendar each year.
More importantly, Ed's genuine respect and care for the drivers and fans surrounding him was always evident. Ed came closer than anybody to dispelling the phrase 'You can't please all the people all the time.'
The Knoxville event will now and forever be known as the Ed Sheckler Memorial.
He will be dearly missed by all. Rest in peace, Ed.

USRA ANNOUNCES RULES CHANGES FOR 2007
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (Oct. 24) -- On the heels of wrapping up their most successful racing season to date, officials from the United States Racing Association (USRA) have announced rules changes for four sanctioned divisions, effective January 1, 2007.
We have conducted an extensive review of the combinations of classes that are currently sanctioned under the USRA banner, and believe we have modified the rules to meet our goals of providing affordable, close competition and stability for the 2007 season and beyond, said USRA president Todd Staley.
Rules stability and affordability is our ultimate goal, but competition must weigh heavy when making these decisions. We must limit a teams ability to gain a major performance advantage with his or her pocketbook, while at the same time fostering an environment where the mechanical aptitude and technical experience play a role in a teams success. We feel we have addressed these issues, and look forward to seeing the results.
Among the rules changes for 2007 are:
Hobby Stocks:
No weight rule.
Stock Cars:
Head and intake claim will be $600.
Carburetor claim will be $100 with exchange option (same procedure as motor claim).
B-Modifieds:
Drivers utilizing a Performer Intake must add twenty-five (25) pounds in front of the mid-plate.
Total weight rule will remain 2,500 lbs.
No spoiler (this is not a track option).
Modifieds:
Flat tappet/steel head engine: Minimum overall car weight 2,400 lbs.; Maximum 8 spoiler; Stud girdles and shaft rockers allowed.
Brodix aluminum spec head engine: Minimum overall car weight 2,400 lbs.; Maximum 8 spoiler; Roller cams allowed. Drivers utilizing the Brodix aluminum spec head will be eligible for additional contingencies and points money.
All engines not utilizing a flat tappet/steel head engine, or not using the Brodix aluminum spec head engine: Stock valve angle heads only; No raised intake runner heads; Minimum overall car weight 2,450 lbs. (if using aluminum heads, must have 50 lbs. in front of mid-plate); Roller cams allowed; Maximum 5 spoiler.
An 8 back panel is required (no track option).
Tri-Y headers are not allowed.
Canister shocks are not allowed. Shock claim will be $100 per shock.
Doors and quarters may be mounted one inch above the deck.
Quick change rear-end is optional for 2007. If using a quick change rear-end, must use steel tubes and must utilize pinion taper bearings; Aluminum spools are allowed. The USRA is currently negotiating with quick change manufacturers and will announce more details as they become available.
Other notable changes and/or additions to the 2007 rulebook include:
How Points Are Awarded:
While car count bonus points and passing points toward USRA national points will remain unchanged, the base points system will be doubled for both national and track points. For instance, a feature win in 2006 was worth 100 points, but will be worth 200 points in 2007.
Technical Inspections:
The 2007 USRA rulebook will feature specific tech procedures that all sanctioned tracks and drivers must adhere to. In all USRA-sanctioned classes at all USRA-sanctioned tracks, either (a) the top four finishers in the main event, or (b) the top three finishers in the main event and one randomly selected car will be required to report to a designated tech area following the main event, where both mandatory and varied technical inspections will be required to take place. Each track will be required to have a USRA-certified tech inspector on staff.
New Late Model Division:
The USRA will be announcing comprehensive rules for a new Late Model class that will, for the first time, compete under the USRA banner. Complete rules, as well as plans for a regional touring series, will be announced on or before November 11.
Handy Pocket-Sized Rulebooks:
All USRA-licensed drivers will receive a handy pocket-sized rulebook that they can use while working at the shop or for clarifications at the track. The rulebook will contain rules and procedures for all USRA-sanctioned classes, plus contact information and more. These rulebooks will also be for sale to the general public. Nonetheless, as always, rules will be available at the tracks in printed form and available on www.usraracing.com for viewing and/or downloading.
The USRA currently sanctions 21 speedways in six states -- Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Missouri -- with more than 1,600 licensed drivers competing at USRA-sanctioned events during the 2006 season.
For racetrack promoters looking for an option that considers their bottom line, as well as the bottom line of the racer and fan, the USRA invites all short-track and regional series operators to have a look at what we have to offer as your motorsports marketing partner.
About the USRA
The United States Racing Association (USRA) was formed with a mission of accomplishing three goals: increased driver participation, increased attendance and increased sponsorship for each USRA-sanctioned racetrack. The USRA serves as a marketing partner with the bottom line of our sanctioned tracks at interest, and we are committed to maintaining guidelines to make racing affordable and fun for all racers, yet exciting and competitive for fans. The USRA is committed to providing a combination of cost-effective rules for competitors in weekly auto racing and effective marketing strategies to assist in the growth and popularity of the tracks at which they compete. For more information regarding the USRA, call (515) 832-6000 or visit the USRA online at www.usraracing.com.

PAYNE, PHILLIPS, SCHMITT, WATERMAN, GIBSON, WENIG, BROWN CASH IN ON FINAL NIGHT OF 2ND ANNUAL PIZZA HUT MEMPHIS FALL NATIONALS
By Brian Neal
MEMPHIS, Mo. (Oct. 14) -- Mother Nature might not have been warm, but the racing action on the final night of the 2nd Annual Pizza Hut Memphis Fall Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway was fiery hot. Jeremy Payne (Keith's Foods Late Models), Terry Phillips (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Tom Schmitt (USRA Stock Cars), Jeff Waterman (Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds), Bill Gibson (USRA Hobby Stocks), Dan Wenig (Outlaw Hobbies) and John Brown (Hornets) all taking the big pay checks back home with them.
The 10-lap Hornet feature was the first to take to the speedway, with Ronald Kibbe and Chuck Fullenkamp leading the field to the green. Kibbe would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 6, when Brooke Hassler, who started thirteenth, slipped by for the lead. Hassler then held the top spot until lap 9 when he and Travis DeMint, who started fourteenth, made contact allowing John Brown, who started twelfth, to get by for the lead. Brown then held on for the final lap to pick up the win and the $300 top prize. Hassler recovered to finish in second, with DeMint holding on for third, Sarah Woodhurst came from eleventh to finish in fourth, with Fullenkamp holding on for fifth.
Up next was the 15-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with Bill Gibson and Jason McDaniel on the front row. Gibson grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag and then held it until lap 10, when Wood slipped by for the top spot. But a caution would come out before the lap was complete, giving the lead back to Gibson. Gibson once again grabbed the lead on the restart and then held on for the final five laps to claim the $600 top prize. Wood settled for second, Donnvan Nunnikhoven came from eighth to finish in third, Bob Lynch was fourth, with Tim Kraber, who started tenth, rounding out the top five.
Beau Taylor and Michael St. Clair made up the front row for the 15-lap Outlaw Hobby main event, with Taylor jumping out front on lap 1. Taylor then held the top spot until lap 9 when Rodger Dresden edged him out at the line by inches to take over the lead. Dresden and Taylor continued to battle for the lead, as Dan Wenig, who started fourteenth, was working his way towards the front. Wenig would make his move for the lead on the final lap, as he slipped under Dresden coming off of turn four to grab the $700 pay check. Dresden settled for second, Derek Reimer was third, Taylor held on for fourth, with Tony Becerra coming home in fifth. Derek Dettmann and Dan Wenig took the last chance race wins.
The 20-lap USRA Stock Car feature was another one that came down to the final lap, as Tom Schmitt held off Zack VanderBeek for the win. Schmitt and VanderBeek made up the front row, with Schmitt moving out front on the drop of the green flag. Schmitt held the lead for all 20 laps, but VanderBeek would slip under him on the final lap coming off of turn four with the two bumping each other to the checkered flag. Schmitt would edge out VanderBeek at the line to claim the $2,000 top prize. Matt Greiner was third, Jason Cook finished in fourth, with Mike Van Genderen rounding out the top five. Last chance races went to Greg Gill and Brandon Rothzen.
Brian Harris and Jeremy Payne drew the front row for the 25-lap Keith's Foods Late Model feature, with Harris taking the lead on the drop of the green flag. Harris, who ran the bottom of the speedway, and Payne, who was up on top, put on a show for the crowd, as the two battled side-by-side for several laps. Payne would grab the lead on lap 17 with Harris coming back on the bottom to lead lap 19, but Payne would grab the top spot back on the next lap. Payne then held off Harris on the final 6 laps to pick up the $3,000 paycheck. Terry Phillips came from tenth to finish in third, Tommy Elston was fourth, with Chris Smyser coming home in fifth. Phillips, Elston, Rickey Frankel and Payne each picked up a heat race win, while Jason Bodenhammer picked up the semi win.
Up next was the 18-lap Advance Trading USRA B-Modified feature, with Jack Evans Jr. and Tony Dunker leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Evans would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 13, when Jeff Waterman, who started seventh, jumped to his outside to take over the lead. Waterman then pulled away on the final 5 lap to pick up the $1,000 top prize, his biggest win of his career to-date. Evans settled for second, Ryan Giles charged from nineteenth to finish in third, Wyatt Lantz was fourth, with Bob Woodrow rounding out the top five. Last chance races went to Tony Garner, Terry Houston and Dustin Boling, with Jacob Murray picking up the last last chance win.
The final feature of the evening was the 40-lap Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds, with Kelly Shryock and Darin Duffy on the front row. Shryock would grab the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 5, when Terry Phillips slid under him for the top spot. Phillips had worked up a straight-away lead over Shryock and Mark Burgtorf, when that was narrowed to a bumper on lap 30, as they entered lapped traffic. Shryock would try a last lap pass of Phillips and slid high, allowing Burgtorf to get by for second, as Phillips went on to score the $5,000 win in a caution-free event. Zack VanderBeek would come home in fourth, with Michael Long coming home in fifth. Tony Fraise, Mike Wedelstadt and Ryan Meyer picked up the last chance races, while Darin Thye picked up the last last chance win.
Coming up next at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway will be the final event of the 2006 season. This will also be the season-ending chase for "The Hunt" for the O'Reilly United States Modified Touring Series on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4. Also in action will be the USRA Stock Cars, Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds, USRA Hobby Stocks, Outlaw Hobbies and Hornets.

PHILLIPS, DUFFY, VANDERBEEK, DUNKER, WOOD, ST. CLAIR, PORTER GARNER GOLD IN SECOND ROUND OF PIZZA HUT MEMPHIS FALL NATIONALS
By Brian Neal
MEMPHIS, Mo. (Oct. 13) -- Qualifying for the second night of the Pizza Hut Fall Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway was put into the books on Friday night with Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo. (Keith's Foods Late Models), Darin Duffy of Hazleton, Iowa (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa (USRA Stock Cars), Tony Dunker of Quincy, Ill. (Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds), Nathan Wood of Keswick, Iowa (USRA Hobby Stocks), Michael St. Clair of Kahoka, Mo. (Outlaw Hobbies) and Dale Porter of Floris, Iowa (Hornets) picking up qualifying feature wins.
The 15-lap USRA Stock Car feature was first to take to the track, with Brandon Rothzen and Toby Johnson on the front row. Rothzen took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1. Darin Thye moved in on lap 2 to challenge Rothzen for the top spot as they battled side-by-side for the lead until lap 7 when Zack VanderBeek slid under both drivers to take over the lead. VanderBeek held on for the final eight laps to pick up the win and garner the outside front row starting spot for Saturday's $2,000-to-win finale. Thye settled for second, Troy Alexander came home in third, Abe Huls was fourth and Johnson held on for fifth. Shelly Mizell took the final transfer spot into Saturday's main event. VanderBeek, Rothzen and Greg Gill each picked up a heat race win.
Up next was the 15-lap Outlaw Hobby feature, with Jimmy Hooper and Michael Larsen drawing the front row. Hooper jumped out into the lead on lap 1 and held it for one lap before Jim Lynch slipped by for the top spot. Lynch went on to hold the top spot until lap 4 when Michael St. Clair, who started eighth, jumped to his outside to grab the lead. St. Clair went on to lead the final 12 laps to claim the victory and earn the outside front row starting spot for Saturdays' $700-to-win finale. Jake Wenig came from 10th to finish in second, Derek Reimer was third, Larsen held on for fourth. Rob Wilsey started 17th and finish in fifth, with Hooper holding on for the sixth and final transfer spot. Heat race winners were Jake and Dan Wenig.
Donovan Nunnikhoven and Shawn Coleman led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 12-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with Nunnikhoven jumping out front on the start. Nunnikhoven held the lead until lap 3 when USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national champion Nathan Wood slid under him for the top spot. Wood went on to lead the final nine laps to pick up the win and give himself the outside front row starting spot for Saturday's $600-to-win finale. Nunnikhoven held on for second, Dustin Griffiths was third, Tim Kraber was fourth and Shawn Coleman held on for fifth. Andy Coleman took the sixth and final transfer spot. Wood and Kraber claimed the heat race wins.
The Bentz GM Country USRA Modified feature had Ron Barker and Chris Spieker on the front row for their 20-lap event. Barker took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead at the drop of the green flag. Barker continued to hold the top spot as Michael Long, Terry Phillips, who started 16th, and Darin Duffy were battling it out for the second spot. Barker, who ran the top side of the speedway, and Long, who was on the bottom, ran laps 14 through 17 side-by-side before the two made contact going down the backstretch on lap 18. Barker slowed in turns 3-4 with a cut left rear tire, ending his night. Long inherited the lead, with Duffy and Phillips now on his back bumper. Long held them off until the last lap when Duffy jumped to the outside of Long going into turn 3, and came out of turn 4 with the lead and took the narrow win, and earned the outside front row starting spot for Saturday's $5,000-to-win finale. Long settled for second, Phillips was third, Ryan Ruter came from 12th to finish in fourth and Lee Hibner was fifth. Dan Chapman came from 13th to snare the sixth and final transfer spot. Heat race winners were Gary Blackburn Jr., Scott Dickey, Long and Tony Fraise, while Mike Wedelstadt pick up the win in the semi.
The lighting-fast Keith's Foods Late Models joined the card on Friday, racing a complete show for $2,000 to win with 41 drivers checked in for competition. Mike Smith and Tommy Elston drew the front row for the 25-lap feature, with Elston jumping out front on the drop of the green flag. Elston continued to lead the field as Terry Phillips, who started ninth, and Brian Harris, who started 11th, were working their way towards the front. Elston and Phillips battled each other for the lead from laps 14 through 16 before Phillips finally took command of the race. Phillips went on to lead the final nine laps to pick up the win and the $2,000 top prize. Elston settled for second, Harris was third and Smith held on for fourth, with Steve Lance Jr. rounding out the top-5. Jeremy Payne, Denny Woodworth, Harris and Phillips each picked up a heat race win, while Darrel DeFrance and Robby Warner claimed wins in the semi.
Tony Dunker and Tony Garner started the 15-lap Advance Trading USRA B-Modified feature on the front row, with Dunker grabbing the lead on lap 1. Dunker held the top spot until lap 17 when Wyatt Lantz, who started seventh, slipped under Dunker for the lead. Dunker didn't give up easy, however, as he slipped back by Lantz on lap 19 then held him off for the win and grab the outside front row starting spot for Saturday's $1,000-to-win finale. Kelly Smith finished third, Bob Woodrow was fourth, Porter Collins finished in fifth and Jim Gillenwater came from 12th to take the final transfer spot.
