Greg Johnson Takes Kentucky Speedweek Night #3 at Richmond

RICHMOND, KY (5/29/07)  -  Defending Kentucky Speedweek Champion Greg Johnson became the third different winner in three nights of racing in the 2007 Kentucky Speedweek Tuesday night as the Bedford, IN native picked up the win at Richmond Raceway.  Johnson is now tied with Mike Jewell for the lead in all-time O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Series wins with nine.

Greg Johnson and Michael Chilton brought the field to the green and, heading into turns one and two, Chilton and several others came together bringing out a caution.  With Chilton unable to continue, Josh McGuire moved up to the outside front row starting spot.  Johnson would quickly bolt into the lead with Victor Lee, McGuire, Justin Rattliff, and Mike Marlar in tow.  McGuire and Lee raced side-by-side for second with McGuire finally wrestling the spot away on lap 3.  One circuit later, a caution flag would fly as track points leader Aaron Hatton slowed to a stop in turn one.  On the ensuing restart, a second caution would fall for an accident on the backstretch involving Bryan Barber and Marty Stepp.

When racing resumed, Lee worked back around McGuire to reclaim second with Marlar knocking on the back door in fourth.  Behind them, Randy Weaver, Jason Keltner, and Johnny Wheeler danced for the sixth spot with Weaver holding down the position.

The top four cars slowly put a little distance between themselves and fifth place Justin Rattliff.  While Johnson remained in command of the race, his lead was never safe with Lee, McGuire, and Marlar all applying pressure.  Meanwhile, the fans turned their attention to Tyrel Todd.  Todd, the Hard Charger in the two previous Speedweek races, was once again on the move from his 18th starting position.  By lap 12, the Eubank, KY driver was up to eighth and working on Keltner for seventh.  Todd would grab the position on the next lap and then set his sights on Weaver.

Just as the halfway signal was given to the field, race leader Johnson closed in on the back of the field.  The front foursome worked masterfully through the backmarkers with Johnson, Lee, McGuire, and Marlar involved a highly-entertaining, high speed game of cat-and-mouse.  Behind them, the hard charging Tyrel Todd continued to steal the show as he took sixth place from Weaver on lap 24 and then cracked the top five by passing Rattliff on lap 27.

The final caution of the event would wave on lap 30 when Bobby Wolter Jr. slowed in turns one and two.  The yellow set up a ten-lap dash to the finish with Johnson leading Lee, McGuire, Marlar, and Todd.

On the Delaware double-file restart, McGuire bolted past Lee and momentarily pulled alongside Johnson in a bid for the lead.  The duo raced side-by-side for a lap before Johnson inched back ahead.  Behind them, Todd darted ahead of Marlar and disposed of Lee one circuit later to move into third.  He immediately began to hound McGuire for second with just seven laps to go.

With both McGuire and Todd within striking distance of Johnson, the race-long leader remained flawless in the closing laps of the race.  Todd was unable to get by McGuire for second, and McGuire simply didn't have enough to get by Johnson.  At the stripe, it was Bedford, IN's Greg Johnson claiming the win in his J&J Steel/Rayburn Race Cars/Kendall Trucks & Parts/Group Metals Recycling/Budda Bert Transmissions/B&M Salvage sponsored, Jeff Burns powered, Rayburn Grand Prix getting the win.  It was the first O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass win of the season for the defending Kentucky Speedweek Champion.

"We've been trying a few things different on this car and it just wasn't working," Johnson said after the race.  "So we changed a bunch of stuff and went back to my old set-up and it got the job done for us."

Second spot went to Ashland, KY's Josh McGuire in a GCP powered Rayburn Grand Prix sponsored by Expert Glass & Roof and DJ's Kitchen Construction.  Finishing in third place was 18th-starting Tyrel Todd of Eubank, KY in his Gerald's Auto Parts/Todd Metals sponsored Bullock/Rayburn Monte Carlo.  Stanford, KY's Victor Lee would grab fourth driving the Budda Bert Transmissions/Big T's Drywall sponsored, Jay Dickens powered, Rayburn Grand Prix.  Rounding out the top five was Winfield, TN's Mike Marlar in an Estes powered Rayburn GTO sponsored by Fleming Auto Parts and Crumps Lawn & Garden.

36 entries were on hand for the race with Josh McGuire setting fast time during Racing Optics Time Trials with a quick lap of 15.384.  Mason Racin'/Arizona Sport Shirts Heats went to McGuire, Victor Lee, Michael Chilton, and Greg Johnson while the Design 500 B-Mains were won by Tim Tungate and Tyrel Todd.
