VANDERBEEK, REICKS, ENGEN, HARE, HENKES TOP OPENING NIGHT
AT CRESCO USRA NATIONALS

CRESCO, Iowa (Oct. 11) — Fans and drivers that braved the
cold were treated to some hot on-track action Thursday
night as the inaugural Cresco USRA Nationals kicked off at

VanderBeek (USRA Modifieds), Tory Reicks (USRA Stock
Cars), Curtis Engen (USRA B-Mods), Brandon Hare (USRA
Hobby Stocks) and Cody Henkes (Outlaw Hobbys).

In the USRA Modified main event, Zack VanderBeek of New
Sharon slipped back several spots at the start of the
race, but clawed his way back to the front and took the
lead from Decorah's Dan Bohr with a dramatic four-wide
pass down the backstretch as the leaders split a lapped

Donlinger of Rochester, Minn., taking the runner-up spot.

racing throughout the season, and again on Thursday the
full-fendered warriors did not disappoint. Shawn Peter of
Mabel, Minn., held the advantage early in the main event,
but pressure from Decorah's Kurt Krauskpof throughout the
race kept him on his toes. Late in the race,
ninth-starting Tory Reicks of Waucoma joined the battle up
front as he slipped around the leader on the final lap to
edge Peter at the line for the win. Matt Greiner of
Washingon finished fourth behind Krauskopf, followed by
Kevin Bidne of Decorah in fifth and Mike Bergan of
Ridgeway sixth to earn spots in Saturday's $2,000-to-win
feature.

Monona, Iowa's Curtis Engen found victory lane in the USRA

Minn., for the win. Joining them in Saturday's
$1,000-to-win finale will be third-place finisher Shane
Panos of Decorah, Todd Hanson of Clear Lake, Jimmy Davis
of Medford, Minn., and Junior Boyer of Calmar.

battle at Cresco Speedway between Elma's Brandon Hare and

win. Third went to Scott Spilde of Eidgeway, followed by
Steve Holthaus of Cresco in fourth, Kyle Anderson of
Decorah in fifth and Webster City's Austin Wolfgram in the
sixth and final transfer spot into Saturday's
$1,000-to-win championship feature.

Cody Henkes of Postville raced from eighth on the starting
grid to capture the Outlaw Hobby main event, with Josh
Ludeking of Waukon grabbing the runner-up finish. Third
through sixth went to Austin Curtin of Waukon, Shawn
Erickson of Cresco, Ben Moudry of Protivin and Ryan
Goergen. USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series
national champion Mitch Hovden of Decorah won his heat
race, but suffered mechanical woes in the main event and
will have to try again Friday to qualify for Saturday's
$1,000-to-win finale.

The action heats back up on Friday with a complete program
of qualifying heats and preliminary features for all five
classes. All drivers will draw for starting positions. The
top-6 from Friday’s preliminary feature will be locked in
for the outside row of Saturday’s main event. All drivers
failing to qualify on Thursday or Friday will redraw for
heat races for Saturday night.

All drivers racing on Saturday will have two chances to
get into Saturday’s main event via heat races and last
chance races. Saturday night’s show will feature
qualifying heats, last chance races and the championship
features in all five divisions.

On Saturday, USRA Modifieds will race for whopping $5,000
to win while USRA Stock Cars battle for $2,000 to win.

PRACTICE NIGHT NIXED, BUT CRESCO USRA NATIONALS STILL SET FOR THIS THURSDAY-SATURDAY, OCT. 11-13

CRESCO, Iowa (Oct. 9) — The 2007 racing season at the Cresco Speedway has been one of the most exciting and memorable ever at the 4/10-mile high-banked clay oval. Henceforth, officials from RL Promotions have announced plans for one final speed-fest to close out the events calendar and give both drivers and fans one last hurrah before the checkered flags are put away for the winter months.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 11-13, the Mighty Howard County Fairgrounds speedplant will be the site of the Inaugural Cresco USRA Nationals. More than 200 drivers in five classes are expected to take part in the big-money mega-blowout. USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Hobbys will be in action all three days.

A practice session scheduled for Wednesday night has been canceled.

"We had a lot of rain on Monday night and we just want our track prep crew to have ample time to groom a perfect racing surface for the three-day weekend," said promoter Todd Staley. "The Cresco track has been smooth and fast all year, and we want it to finish up the same way. We'll have her ready to race on Thursday."

On Thursday, the action heats up with a complete program of qualifying heats and preliminary features for all five classes, plus more of the same on Friday night. All drivers will draw on Thursday and Friday night for starting positions. The top-6 from Thursday’s preliminary feature will be locked in for the inside row of Saturday’s main event. The top-6 from Friday’s preliminary feature will be locked in for the outside row of Saturday’s main event. All drivers failing to qualify on Thursday or Friday will redraw for heat races for Saturday night.

Friday night’s show will be followed by a free hog roast and beverages after the races. Karaoke will also be playing throughout the night.

All drivers racing on Saturday will have two chances to get into Saturday’s main event via heat races and last chance races. Saturday night’s show will feature qualifying heats, last chance races and the championship features in all five divisions.

USRA Modifieds will race for whopping $5,000 to win while USRA Stock Cars battle for $2,000 to win. USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Hobbys will each contend for a top prize of $1,000 on Saturday.

VANDERBEEK DOUBLES UP WHILE WATERMAN, GIBSON, MOUDRY,
WHALEN CASH IN ON FINAL NIGHT OF 3RD ANNUL PEPSI USRA
NATIONALS
by Brian Neal

MEMPHIS, Mo. (Oct. 6) — The 2007 season at the Pepsi
Scotland County Speedway came to a close on Saturday, with
night two of the 3rd Annual Pepsi USRA Nationals being put
into the books. Zack VanderBeek (USRA Modifieds and USRA
Stocks), Jeff Waterman (USRA B-Mods), Bill Gibson (USRA
Hobby Stocks), Ben Moudry (Outlaw Hobbys) and Bill Whalen
(Hornets) each took the big paydays by claiming their
feature wins.

The first feature of the night was the 12-lap Hornet
feature, with Ryan Moore and Tyler Whalen leading the
field to the green flag. Moore would take advantage of his
front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1. Moore
then held the top spot until lap 2, when Bill Whalen
slipped by for the lead. Whalen then held off Dennis Allen
on the final lap to pick up the feature win. Luke Davidson
was third, Jim Garrett was fourth, with Bill Young
rounding out the top five. Tyler and Bill Whalen each
claimed a heat race win.

Up next was the 18-lap Outlaw Hobby feature, with Ben
Moudry and Keith Reed drawing the front row for the event.
Moudry moved out front on lap 1, with Reed and Rob Wilsey
close behind. Moudry would hold the top spot until lap 5,
when Wilsey jumped to his outside to edge him at the line
for the lead. Disaster would strike Wilsey on lap 7, when
he stop in turn two with rear end troubles. Moudry would
inherit the lead back and then held off Brandon Symmonds
on the final lap to pick up the win and the $600 top
prize. Jeff Soper would finish in third, Reed held on for
fourth, with Tim Dawson coming from sixteenth to claim
fifth. Heat race winners were Jake Wenig and Beau Taylor.

Bill Gibson and Mike Shelton led the field to the drop of
the green in the 18-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with
Gibson taking the advantage to lead lap 1. Gibson, Shelton
and Jason McDaniel battled two and three wide for the
lead, with McDaniel grabbing the top spot on lap 9 by
inches. But Gibson would come back on the bottom of the
speedway to get the lead back on lap 11. Gibson then held
off Jim Tull and McDaniel to claim the $600 top prize.
Ryan Vicker came from sixteenth to finish in fourth, with
Louis Lynch charging from twenty-first to round out the
top five. Vicker and Bob Lynch took home the heat race
wins.

Up Next was the 30-lap USRA Modified feature, with Matt
Dotson and Ron Ver Beek drawing the front row. VerBeek
would take advantage of his front row start to jump out
into the lead on lap 1, with Mark Dotson close behind in
second. Dotson would slip under Ver Beek on lap 5 to take
over the top spot and then held it until lap 6, when Al
Hejna jumped under him to take over the lead. Hejna then
held on to the lead for the next five laps, when Friday
night's feature winner, Dean Mahlstedt jumped to his
outside on lap 11 to take over the top spot. While
Mahlstedt and Hejna battled for the top spot, Zack
VanderBeek, who started 17th, was closing in on the two.
VanderBeek would slip under Mahlstedt on lap 29 and then
held him off on the final lap to take home the $2,000
payday. Hejna settled for third, Tony Fraise was fourth,
with Bruce Hanford charging from 20th to come home in
fifth. Heat race winners were Hejna, VerBeek, Ryan Gustin
and Fraise, while Mark VanWinkle and Donovan Lodge topped
the B-Mains.

Jeff Waterman and Wyatt Lantz led the field to the green
flag in the 18-lap USRA B-Mods feature, with Lantz moving
out front on lap 1. Lantz then held the lead until a lap 5
restart, when Tony Dunker got into the back of him and
spun him, sending both drivers to the back. Waterman would
inherit the lead and then held off Rob Carter in a
shortened race to claim the $700 top prize. Josh Larson
came from fifteenth to finish in third, Jim Gillenwater
started thirteenth and finished in fourth, with Lonnie
Wyman Jr. coming from sixteenth to round out the top five.
Porter Collins, Wyman Jr. and Bob Woodrow took home the
race wins.

The final feature of the night was the 20-lap USRA Stock
Cars, with USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing
Series national champion Tom Schmitt and Zack VanderBeek
drawing the front row for the event. Schmitt would take
advantage of his front row start to move out front on lap
1, with VanderBeek close behind in second. Schmitt worked
to hold off VanderBeek, but VanderBeek would slip under
him on lap 11 to take over the top spot. VanderBeek then
pulled away over the final 9 laps to claim his second win
on the night and the $1,000 paycheck. Schmitt held on for
second, Jason Cook was third, Matt Greiner was fourth,
with Mike Van Genderen coming home in fifth. Heat race
winners were Mark Holt, Chris Wibbell, Nathan Wood and
Lynn Panos, while Jeff Joldersma and Greg Mitchell topped
the B-Mains.

MAHLSTEDT, VANDERBEEK, LANTZ, MCDANIEL, MOUDRY, DAVIDSON
TOP OPENING NIGHT OF 3RD ANNUAL PEPSI USRA NATIONALS
by Brian Neal

MEMPHIS, Mo. (Oct. 5) — What a great night for racing at
the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway, with temperatures in
the lower 70's at race time on Friday during the 3rd
Annual Pepsi USRA Nationals. Taking home feature wins on
the night were Dean Mahlstedt (USRA Modifieds), Zack
VanderBeek (USRA Stock Cars), Wyatt Lantz (USRA B-Mods),
Jason McDaniel (USRA Hobby Stocks), Ben Moudry (Outlaw
Hobbys) and Luke Davidson (Hornets).

The first feature to take to the track was the 15-lap
Outlaw Hobby feature, with Ben Moudry and Beau Taylor
drawing the front row for the event. Moudry would take
advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead
on the drop of the green flag. Moudry then worked to try
and hold off Jake Wenig, as the two drivers ran
side-by-side several times before Wenig pulled out with
front end troubles. Moudry then held off Cody Henkes, who
started tenth, to pick up the win. Jeff Soper would finish
in third, Rob Wilsey was fourth, Keith Reed was fifth,
with Brandon Symmonds taking the final qualifying spot for
Saturdays feature. Wilsey, Henkes and Moudry each picked
up a heat race win.

Up next was the 10-lap Hornet feature, with Devin Still
and Andrew Hustead leading the field to the green. But it
was third place starter and 2007 track champion Luke
Davidson jumping out front on lap 1. Davidson then held
the lead until lap 6, when Tyler Whalen slipped by for the
top spot. But Whalen had a tire go down on lap 8, giving
the lead back to Davidson who held off Bill Whalen over
the final two laps to claim the win. Jim Garrett was
third, Bill Young was fourth, with Brent Hartley rounding
out the top five. Heat race winners were Bill Whalen and
Lew Aikman

Zack VanderBeek and Jason Cook drew the front row for the
18-lap USRA Stock Car feature, with VanderBeek moving out
front on lap 1. Cook, Tom Schmitt, who started seventh,
and Matt Greiner, who changed motors after hot laps and
started twenty-first, moved up to battle three to wide for
the second spot. VanderBeek would go on to lead all 18
laps and held off a last lap challenge from Schmitt to
grab the win. Greiner would finish in third, Cook was
fourth, Mike Van Genderen was fifth, with Mike Robinson
coming from seventeenth to take the final transfer spot
into Saturdays feature. VanderBeek, Schmitt, Bert McDaniel
Jr., Nathan Wood and Van Genderen each picked up a heat
race win, while Greiner and Greg Mitchell topped the
B-Mains.

The 15-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature was up next, with Alan
Hultz and Mike Shelton drawing the front row for the
event. Shelton would take advantage of his starting spot
to grab the lead on the drop of the green flag. Shelton
would continue to hold the top spot, as Bill Gibson, Jim
Tull and Jason McDaniel battled two and three wide for
second. Gibson would jump to the outside of Shelton on lap
9 to take over the lead, with McDaniel following into
second. Gibson, who was running the bottom, and McDaniel,
who was running up top, would run the final five laps
side-by-side. Coming off the fourth turn on the final lap
the two drivers dragged down the frontstrech to the finish
line, with McDaniel edging out the win by inches over
Gibson, Tull was third, Shelton held for fourth, Jimmy
Hayes was fifth, with Mark Moore grabbing the final
transfer spot into Saturdays feature. Heat race winners
were Hultz, Derek Kirkland and Gibson.

Up next was the 16-lap USRA B-Mod feature, with Craig
Spegal and Wyatt Lantz leading the field to the drop of
the green flag. Lantz jumped out front on lap 1 and then
held on in a shortened race to pick up the win. Tony
Dunker came from the rear after being involved in a early
crash to finish in second, Joe Hooper started sixteenth
and would finish in third, Jeff Waterman came from
fourteenth to finish in fourth, Robbie Reed came from
twentieth to finish in fifth, with Terry Houston came from
twenty-first to take the final transfer spot for Saturdays
feature. Jared Fuller, Dunker, Gillenwater and Charles
VanBoening took home the heat race wins.

The final feature of the night was the 25-lap USRA
Modified feature, with Mark Burgtorf and Blake Sedgwick
drawing the front row for the event. Burgtorf would take
advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead
on lap 1, with Mark VanWinkle, Richie Gustin and Al Hejna
battling for second. Burgtorf would hold the top spot
until lap 20, when Dean Mahlstedt, who started ninth,
slipped by for the lead. Mahlstedt then held on over the
final five laps to claim his fourth feature win in a row
in his last four starts. Burgtorf held on for second,
Hejna was third, VanWinkle was fourth, with Ryan Gustin
rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Bruce
Hanford, Ryan Gustin, Ron VerBeek, Burgtorf and Mahlstedt,
while Bob Dale and Mark Dotson topped the B-Mains.

MAHLSTEDT, GREINER, BRYANT, GIBSON EMERGE AS MUSCO LIGHTING FALL CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS

By Tony Paris

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Sept. 16) — The finals for the 16th annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge was held Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16, due to rain on Saturday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. After a chilly night for the drivers and fans on Friday night, Sunday gave way to beautiful sunny skies and temperatures in the '70s, which made for an awesome show at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster.

On Sunday afternoon, Bobby Greiner Jr. of Ottumwa passed Nathan Wood of Keswick for the win and the $1,000 top prize on the 17th lap of the 20-lap USRA Hobby Stock main event. While Wood hung on for second, 2007 track champion Matt Greiner of Washington was third and Malcolm Teachout of Granada, Minn.. grabbed the fourth spot. Jerry Pilcher of Floris rounded out the top-5 in the thrilling battle. After several burnouts to celebrate his feature win, Greiner announced to the crowd that this was his final season in the cockpit and he was retiring from driving.

The $500-to-win USRA B-Mod feature saw Cory Brown of Ottumwa take the lead and pace the field until a lap-9 before caution closed the field up. After the restart, Ken Bryant of Ottumwa made the winning pass on lap 11 and drove to victory lane, with Brown taking second and Paul Underwood in third, giving all three podium spots to Ottumwa pilots. Andrew Schroeder of Keswick took fourth, while Raymond Lundry of Maynard, who is currently second in the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series standings, completed the top-5.

The USRA Hobby Stock feature saw Bill Gibson of Knoxville, Mark Haglund of Webster City and Chris Hovden of Cresco battle for the lead, with Gibson taking the lead on lap 7 and holding off several challenges to take the $500 win. Haglund took second, followed by Hovden, Nathan Wood of Keswick and veteran Bill Bonnett of Knoxville.

The final feature of the day was the $2,000-to-win MUSCO Lighting USRA Modified main event, and what a doozey it was! The race capped off the 2007 season with six different leaders and numerous flat tires from the rubbered-down racing surface. The fans got to see drivers from 16 to 55 years of age going to battle for the title and the cash. The feature came down to a green-white-checkered finish with Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake driving his No. 21m Bullet Chassis to victory lane for the second time of the weekend. Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., took second, followed by Ron Ver Beek of Oskaloosa in third, Bruce Hanford of Davenport fourth and 2007 track champion Brandon Banks of Washington fifth.

The 16th Annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge put the wraps on the 2007 season at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Track champions, top points-getters and special award recipients will be feted at the annual banquet this Fall, and a tentative 2008 schedule of events will be announced before the end of the year.

Officials from RL Promotions and the staff of the Southern Iowa Fairboard extend their gratitude and thanks to all of the fans, drivers, crewmembers and sponsors that helped make the 2007 season one of the most exciting and memorable ever at Osky.
