FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
FAP/WCS Attorneys Working Diligently On Lawsuit*
Orrville, OH — Management of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway
have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from race fans, race
teams and others who are involved in the dirt racing industry since the
announcement that the popular Orrville, OH 3/8 mile banked dirt oval was
facing additional litigation that subsequently caused the cancellation
of the track’s season finale, the 4th Annual Freedom Fighters 50 that
was to be run on September 15. Litigation that has been ongoing for
nearly two decades continues and management of the track have their
attorneys working diligently to attempt to work out a positive conclusion.
Individuals from all around the country and as far away as Australia and
Canada have called and emailed the track showing support and asking that
their voices be heard. To that end anyone wishing to write to the
proponents involved may do so by writing to the following: Judge Robert
J. Brown, Common Pleas Court House, 107 West Liberty Street, Wooster,
Ohio 44691 and/or the attorney for the plaintiff, Marie L. Moore, 136 E.
Market Street, Orrville, OH 44667.
The legal action originated in 1988 under previous ownership (Case No.:
87-CI-288, Wayne County). After 19 years of legal action and proceedings
coupled with more threats of additional legal action by two neighbors,
the track, in its 42nd season of operation, was unable to race on
September 15.
The legal process has been ongoing for nearly two decades. . The case,
now in the Court of Appeals (Case No. 07-CA-0027), has hampered the
operation of the speedway based on the plaintiffs’ claims that the
speedway is not complying with a Consent Decree reached in 1988.
Two days prior to the scheduled season-ending race, management received
a letter from the plaintiffs’ attorney, Marie L. Moore, that said, in part:
“My clients are concerned that Wayne County Speedway has scheduled and
plans to conduct a racing activity at the speedway premises on Saturday
September 15, 2007 with a proposed rain date of Sunday September 16, 2007.
“My clients believe any race-type activity conducted by the Speedway
after the close of the season, September 3, 2007, and before the opening
of the season on the third Saturday of April 2008, is in violation of
the May 9, 1988 Consent Decree. Further, my clients hold the position
the May 9, 1988 Consent Decree does permit any type of race activity at
the Speedway on
Sunday at anytime of the year.
“This letter will serve notice by the Plaintiffs that upon the
Defendants that this matter will be presented to the court for decision
should the Defendants conduct the racing activity on September 15 and/or
September 16, 2007 as presently planned.”
Management immediately conferred with the speedway’s attorneys, the law
firm of Weldon, Huston & Keyser, who drafted a letter of response
immediately which stated, in part:
“We previously responded to the issues raised in your letter in my March
28 and April 6, 2007 letters to you, which Mr. Forrer did not respond
to. “Again, in good faith and an effort to understand Mr. Forrer’s
position, we would ask that you explain to us the basis for this
position that the ‘May 9, 1988 does permit any type of race activity at
the Speedway on Sunday at anytime of the year’ as stated in your letter.
“We are unable to find that prohibition in the Consent Decree. Further,
as I stated to you in the March 28 letter, and as the attached 2003
schedule for Wayne County Speedway indicates, at a minimum, racing was
held at the Speedway that year on Sunday May 18, Sunday June 22, Sunday
September 14 and Sunday September 28. Thus, we are at a loss to
understand on what basis Mr. Forrer’s claim that Sunday racing is
prohibited.”
“In addition, as I noted to you in my March 28 letter, racing at the
Speedway continued as late as October 15 in 1999, October 28 in 2000,
October 5 in 2002, and September 28 in 2003. The schedules for those
years are attached. Mr. Coffman had no involvement in Wayne County
Speedway during those years. We are not aware of any contention by Mr.
Forrer that the events on those days violated the Consent Decree.
Certainly no contempt action was filed. As a result, please explain how
racing on September 15, 2007 is a violation of the Consent Decree, as
all of the information we have indicates that is not the case.”
And so it goes once again as litigation is once again threatened against
the speedway
Management and staff are perplexed as to the reasoning behind the
current threat of legal action in light of the fact that the speedway
has been in operation for over four decades and has always been strived
to be a good neighbor and contributing member of the community.
Over the years the speedway has raised money and awareness for a variety
of social service organizations including the Wayne County Committee for
Crippled Children, Wayne-Holmes Soap Box Derby, Boy Scouts, Racing With
Jesus Ministries, Orrville Boys & Girls Club, other organizations and
scholarships. Additionally, the track’s slate of ‘Faster Pastor’ races
raised money and food for local food banks.
The speedway has also provided an economic impact to the Orrville and
Wayne County region over the years via purchases made by race teams and
race fans at area gas stations, grocery stores, motels, department
stores and tourist attractions in addition to the many businesses that
the speedway has utilized over the years for services and products.
Additionally, the speedway has provided full and part time employment
over the years for over 50 individuals annually. The track has also been
a source of revenue for local, county, state and federal taxation
departments.
The speedway always provided a safe environment for families to enjoy a
night of entertainment and over the years several generations of race
fans, drivers and staff members have supported and enjoyed the
activities at the speedway.
The idea to build Wayne County Speedway came in late fall 1964 when N.E.
‘Pete’ Jacobs, Harve Jacobs, Wellman Lehman, Myron Werntz and Gary
Bossler came together as track officers to form a corporation for the
speedway. Using 26 acres of his own land across the road from his home,
Jacobs and the management team soon had many enthusiastic investors
(stockholders) on board including Ken Jacobs, Bob Auten, Clyde Shoup,
Stanley Huffman, Glenn Davisson, Dale Tope, John Malcuit, Bob Condo,
Rich Falk, John Johnson and a number of others.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, May 1,1965, Orrville Mayor Nelson Douglas
led a contingent of dignitaries and enthusiastically leaned on a shovel
and tossed high the first spade of earth, marking the beginning of
construction of Wayne County Speedway, Inc. Opening night was June
26,1965, and the nearly 3,000 seats were packed as fans enthusiastically
watched the ’supermodifieds’ that would eventually evolve into Sprint
Cars. The huge crowd prompted management to announce that additional
grandstands would be constructed as soon as possible.
Over the years some previous staff members were either or became
attorneys, editors, mayors, business owners, state senators, prosecuting
attorneys, disc jockeys, and other vocations.
Management will be announcing further plans and action in the coming
weeks regarding the future of the speedway in addition to details about
the legal proceedings.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Continued Litigation Forces Cancellation Of Wayne County Speedway’s
‘Freedom Fighters 50’ *
Orrville, OH --- This Saturday night's 4th Annual Freedom Fighters 50
for Super Late Models & Sprint Cars extravaganza at Federated Auto Parts
Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH has been canceled due to ongoing
and impending legal action against the popular north central Ohio dirt
track. The legal action originated in 1988 under previous ownership
(Case No.: 87-CI-288, Wayne County). After 19 years of legal action and
proceedings coupled with more threats of additional legal action by two
neighbors, the track, in its 42nd season of operation, will be unable to

The legal process has been ongoing for nearly two decades. The case, now
in the Court of Appeals (Case No. 07-CA-0027), has hampered the
operation of the speedway based on the plaintiffs' claims that the
speedway is not complying with a Consent Decree reached in 1988.
Further threats of additional legal action just two days prior to the
speedway's planned September 15 'Freedom Fighters 50' race, an event
that recognizes and honors the contributions of our country's military
forces as well as our country's domestic safety services men and women,
forced cancellation of the event.
"We are extremely disappointed that we couldn't run this race and event
on September 15," commented Ernie Coffman, who purchased the speedway
four years ago. "I mean, here we are trying to acknowledge the
sacrifices of our armed forces in addition to our police and fire
personnel and we have been thrown yet another roadblock. It was also our
annual Kids Nite and Back To School Nite, a night that families
traditionally enjoy, especially the hundreds of children that attend,
and that too is now not happening."
Management, which has only been able to run twice since experiencing a
fire on April 21 that destroyed the concession stand and office, is
puzzled by the latest round of potential threats of additional lawsuits
and litigation.
Two days prior to the scheduled season-ending race, management received

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Flyin’ Ryan Markham Leads The Fireworks In ‘Firecracker 4’ Finale
By Doc Lehman
Orrville, OH --- With the enormous Orrville Firefighters produced
fireworks spectacular serving as a patriotic and colorful backdrop
during the entire $4,000 to win 40-lap final leg of the inaugural Ohio
Super Late Model Speedweek Firecracker 4 presented by Hoosier Tire Mid
Atlantic main event at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway on
Saturday July 7, Ashland, OH’s ‘Flyin’ Ryan Markham led the on-track
fireworks in capturing the main event over a quality field of Super Late
Models capping a two night sweep for the popular racer.
At the drop of flagman Don Carnes’ green flag Rick Aukland shot into the
lead hounded by Markham, Scott Peltz, George Lee, Rick Bond and Mike
Balzano but it only took until the third circuit for Markham to snag the
lead with Aukland at his heels while Peltz and Balzano engaged in a
battle for third. As the laps began to tick off Markham and Aukland set
sail with Peltz and Balzano swapping third place lap after lap with
eighth starting Doug Drown jousting with Dave Hornikel for fourth.
With cars two and three wide throughout the field jockeying for position
Markham entered lapped traffic on lap 24 with Aukland, Peltz, Balzano,
Drown, Robbie Blair and Lee in pursuit. Within a couple laps Markham had
turned on the afterburners and threaded the needle through lapped
traffic eventually putting nearly a full straightaway on the rest of the
pack as Peltz worked his way into second followed by Balzano, Aukland
with Drown and Blair dueling side by side. When the checkers dropped it
was all Markham followed by Peltz, Balzano, Aukland, Blair, Drown, Lee,
Hornikel, Rocky Owens and Rick Bond.
“This has been a great weekend after the slow start we’ve had this
year,” stated Markham who won driving his Massillon Transmission, Stu’s
Place, Dor-Lo’s Pizza sponsored Rocket Chassis/C & C Performance Engines
#5m. “We were here two weeks ago and ran second to (Donnie) Moran using
the low groove but tonight we went up to the top groove and it worked
for us. The car worked great, the crew did a terrific job and it feels
good to win back to back nights.” Markham had won the first portion of
the special series the night prior at Lakeville Speedway.
Winning heat races were Balzano, Drown & Hornikel while Aukland won the
dash and Eric Myers won the B Main.
In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stock main event after a lap one
red flag Fred Snyder set the pace followed closely by Chad Craver, Don
Baney, Randy Nisly and Jim Nicely. As the laps were run off Nicely was
all over Baney for third as the pair powered through the turns side by
side for several laps as Nicely eventually finessed his way into second
place and set his sites on Snyder who he was able to pass on lap nine
off turn two with Snyder, Baney, Craver and Frank Oriti in hot pursuit.
During the latter stages the trio of Snyder, Baney and Oriti entertained
and energized the crowd with a three-way slugfest for second with Baney
taking command of the runner-up spot on lap 18. During the final two
laps it was Nicely, of Atwater, OH, in charge and taking the win over,
Baney, Snyder, Oriti, Jose Marsh, Troy Anderson, Craver, Dave Haven,
Jr., Nisly and Travis Menshing.
The Mini Stocks did double duty with two feature events starting with
April 21 postponed main event that had Cody Rinard in large and in
charge pulling away from the field until a lap seven caution. On the
restart Neil Nisly made his presence known by taking second from Don
Lehman while Charlie Ray and Chase Alexander went side by side battling
for fifth that eventually saw Alexander make his way up to third and
holding on while Nisly took the win over Rinard, Alexander, Ray, Dale
Beckett, Lehman, Jeff Theil, Mitch Reichard, Jorden James and John Raber.
In the second Mini Stock barnburner main event Dale Beckett returned to
his familiar winning ways by taking the feature win over a hard-charging
Henry Britton, Neil Nisly, Chase Alexander, Cody Rinard, Jeff Theil,
Charlie Ray, Jorden James, Waine Newbury and Brian Baker, Sr.
The next race at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway will be the

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Ohio Super Late Model Speedweek Firecracker 4 All Set!
Orrville, OH --- Despite the April 21 fire at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH putting the track out of operation for two months, dirt Late Model fans will be happy to learn that the inaugural Ohio Super Late Model Speedweek Firecracker 4 will be held as originally planned as a cooperative promotional effort between Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway and Lakeville Speedway in Lakeville, OH. The series will run on consecutive nights July 4-7 and will carry a total payoff of nearly $100,000
“We are mighty pleased that we will be able to open for our Monday June 25 race featuring the 12th Annual Pete Jacobs Memorial as part of the Ohio Sprint Speedweek but we have also decided to forge ahead and run the inaugural Ohio Super Late Model Speedweek Firecracker 4 for the Super Late Models as well,” revealed Ernie Coffman, promoter & owner of the 3/8 mile banked dirt oval. “We were going to begin construction on our new concession stand immediately after the Speedweek show but we have decided, based on popular demand and interest, to go ahead and run the joint effort with Lakeville.”
“We won’t have a new concession building constructed but there will be concessions available those nights,” explained Coffman. “We are thankful for everyone’s concern and interest in the track and we’re thankful that the track will be up and running for that very special night.”
Each Super Late Model feature event will be 40-laps paying $4,000 to win and $420 to take the green flag and race time will commence at 8:00 PM each night. On Wednesday July 4 the inaugural Ohio Super Late Model Speedweek Firecracker 4 will kick-off at Lakeville Speedway then continue at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway on Thursday July 5 before returning to Lakeville on Friday July 6 and then wrap up on Saturday July 7 at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway.
Pure Stocks and Mini Stocks will also be in action during the holiday series and purse and bonus money information will be announced soon.
“This will be a good series of races for the fans and drivers, the races pay
well, and we are planning some special promotional things for the fans,”
said Coffman. “We are already looking at expanding it next season and have a
couple tracks interested. But for this year both tracks are offering race
fans lots of outstanding Super Late Model racing with minimal travel. This
will be an annual Speedweek and there will be tracks added next year.”
“I think it is really going to be an exciting deal,” commented Bob Schippers,
owner & promoter of Lakeville Speedway. “What I’m looking forward to is the
week before a lot of guys are in the area and with Ernie and my race tracks’
only being 27 miles apart hopefully we can keep some guys in the area, save
them some traveling money, they can camp at both tracks and the fans can see
something they don’t have to spend a lot of money on to see so many good
racers.”
“It’s going to be a level playing field for all those drivers and a lot of
money can be won by one guy with this Speedweek,” added Chuck Griffith,
general manager of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway. “To bring
this to the table already, and two race tracks so close in proximity to each
other, this should be named a ‘fuel saver weekend’. But man, this deal is
going to be a killer for the fans and drivers. I can’t wait.”
The races will be unsanctioned. More information will be released in the

Joining the powerful & mighty outlaw winged Sprint Cars of the All Star Circuit of Champions on that night will be the Super Late Models featuring some of the region’s best drivers of these fire-breathing, ground-pounding race cars.
“The race track has been closed since a fire on Saturday April 21 destroyed the concession stand and the electrical system and this race is our return to operation and we want to do it in a big way,” explained Ernie Coffman, owner & promoter of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway. “By offering the popular Super Late Models on the billing that night will give our race fans more bang for their buck.”
Management expects some of the top drivers in Ohio and surrounding region to attend. “When you look at some of the top drivers and teams out there that will likely be at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway for the Ohio Sprint Speedweek race it has to make race fans mighty happy,” added Chuck Griffith, general manager of the track. “With drivers like Doug Drown, Ryan Markham, Rick Bond, J.R. Gentry, our defending track champion Jason Flory, George Lee, Eric ‘Spud’ Myers, Trevor Phillips, Jeff Esbenshade and so many others, we have the makings of a homerun. Add into the mix drivers from outside the region who are available on a Monday night, coupled with the All Stars’ top Sprint Car teams, and this will be quite a night of racing.”
The All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars will be racing for $5,000 to win while the Super Late Models will be competing for a $2,000 first place prize.

Orrville, OH --- Management of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH continue to work towards getting the track back in operation after a Saturday April 21 fire that destroyed the track’s concession stand and former office in addition to causing significant damage to the electrical bank. Management will have to rebuild not only the concession stand but also replace a significant portion of the electrical system and bring all renovations up to current county and state codes.
“We still have some research to do, and have further work with some county and state departments, but we are making some headway,” stated Ernie Coffman, owner & promoter of the 3/8 mile dirt banked oval. Coffman cited having to get clearances, permits, inspections and approvals from a variety of government entities in addition to actual construction that will cause a tentative two-month delay in reopening.
“We have drawings already made up for a new building and on May 15 I will be purchasing the block for the new building,” continued Coffman. “We want to do as much work in-house as possible and utilize as many tradesmen in the racing industry as possible. We don’t have everything firmed up and I would like to talk to some folks who work in the various building trades that are also involved in racing.”
Those in the area who work in the trades, such as block laying, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and other fields are encouraged to contact Coffman at the track office by telephoning 419.522.8761.
Coffman bottom-lined the situation. “It’s our goal to be running again in 2007 and that’s what we’re shooting for. But we need to pull everything together as soon as possible.”
To keep up-to-date on any new developments check out the track’s website at: www.waynecountyspeedway.com or call the track office at: 419.522.8761.

Orrville, OH --- Management of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH regretfully announce that due to the Saturday April 21 fire that destroyed the track’s concession stand and former office in addition to causing significant damage to the electrical bank it will likely be tentatively two months before the track will be able to reopen for dirt track racing. Management will have to rebuild not only the concession stand but also replace a significant portion of the electrical system and bring all renovations up to current county and state codes.
“Well, the fact that this place was built in 1965 and in order to come up with today’s code we have to jump through a lot of hoops and we’re willing to jump through a lot of hoops but its just going to take us some time, which we hate, but there isn’t anything we can do about it,” commented Ernie Coffman, owner and promoter of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway.
Coffman cited having to get clearances, permits, inspections and approvals from a variety of government entities in addition to actual construction that will cause a tentative two-month delay in reopening.
“Any time that you rebuild you have to bring everything up to code,” explained Coffman. “We have to deal with the local government like the health department, the building department, the electrical department, in addition to the Environmental Protection agency (EPA), all have their hand sin this thing and all of them have to give us their blessings.”
On Saturday evening April 21 around 10:30 PM the Modified and Mini Stock features were postponed due to the fire that started in the concession stand. The concession building and its entire contents were a total loss. Firefighters from the Orrville Fire Department and Apple Creek Fire Department responded and brought it under control. Apple Creek Fire Chief Les Durstine said the fire began in the deep fryer unit, the range hood, or in its vent pipe to the outside. The concession stand, located in the northwest corner of the grounds, was a total loss.
Coffman and his son, Clint Coffman, have been in meetings since the fire with different government agencies and others trying to get clearances and a game plan to renovate the facility. Coffman indicated it hasn’t been a total unpleasant experience dealing with the county agencies.
““Actually to be truthful they have been very, very sympathetic and have worked real well with us,” commented Coffman. “Tim McClintock in the building department has been really helpful. With the businesses that are dropping like flies in the Wayne County area and State of Ohio I am sure they want to work with us. We have a good, striving and healthy business and we need to get it back and running. But they have been very good about it.”
Coffman also acknowledge some of the representatives have acknowledged the economic impact a race track has on the region. “Oh my world, like you wouldn’t believe,” said Coffman. “We have thousands of people there every Saturday night and they have to buy gas, sometimes they stay over for the big shows, we have employees who are paid, yes, we make an economic impact in this region.”
Coffman bottom-lined the situation. “It’s our goal to be running again in 2007 and that’s what we’re shooting for.”
Coffman also gave high marks to the Apple Creek and Orrville fire departments that responded to the fire. “The fire department people were very professional and very kind,” said Coffman. “I’ve never been involved in any kind of fire so it took me by surprise and how fast it was and how devastating it was but those firefighters did an excellent job. They were very professional, very professional.”
REACTION TO FIRE & DOWN TIME:
“I was shocked to hear of the fire and the damage it caused,” commented Bret Emrick, Race Director for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series who was scheduled to race at the track on May 5. Emrick is also a former long-time Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway announcer. “The most important thing is that no one was injured. It's too bad.”
“Wayne County Speedway seemed to be really turning the corner after a few down years. To have this now happen will really throw a wrench into keeping the upward swing going. I'm sure Ernie and his staff will get back as soon as they can. From what I've learned there will be major work to get done just to salvage the season the best they can.”
“It's a tragedy not only for Wayne County Speedway's race teams and fans. It also means the touring shows like the World of Outlaws Late Model Series won't be able to put on a show this year. Personally I was really looking forward to getting back to my old stomping grounds.”
“I am very hurt to see Wayne County go through this and hope they get the permits going as fast as possible,” commented Bob Schippers, owner & promoter of Lakeville Speedway in Lakeville, OH. “This race track pays way more then $10,000 in taxes and has only five months to try to make money. They employ over 50 people and have a county impact of thousands of dollars for businesses in the area.”
“Ernie owns his race track outright but what about all other race tracks making payments? This fire could put them out of business. I feel with all the lost jobs in Ohio every government agency should be jumping through hoops to help this man get this track back open as quick as they can. We need this track opened quickly.”
Among those who witnessed the fire was Lora Markham, wife of former track champion and Super Late Model driver Ryan Markham. “(Our daughter) Emma and I were on our way back to the pits after the Late Model feature and I smelled something,” recalled Mrs. Markham. “At first I thought it was a car, but then I looked at my friend, Jamie, and said, ‘It smells like something has been in the fryer too long’.”
“Then I noticed a little
bit of smoke as we walked by the concession stand, within minutes of us
getting back to the hauler there was tons of smoke up in the air and then big
flames started shooting into the air. It was a very scary thing
to see.”
“I guess I was shocked
that it happened too because I have never
seen anything like that. I am sad for the track because of the damage, but
very thankful that no one was hurt. You can replace buildings, but you
can't replace people.”
“Watching the whole thing happen, it was just hard to believe what we were watching and it was such a shock.”
One track staff member, who was working his first night at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway, recalled what transpired that evening. “We were running the Modified feature, and had just restarted the race after a caution period,” explained Rich Berry, head scorer. “The leaders were in turn two, and there was a call on the radio that there was a fire in the concession stand. The flagman, Don Carnes, immediately threw the red flag and the fire crew in the infield was instantly on their way. We opened the tower door and we could see a glow coming from inside the building.”
“Looking back at it now, I guess I was convinced that since the fire crew was so quick to get there that they would knock it right out, and it would only be a minor inconvenience.”
“But as we watched, it was unbelievable to see how quickly the fire spread. Within seconds, that small glow had turned into a bright, visible fire inside the building. And within minutes, the flames were visible coming up over the sides of the roof. By the time the fire department got there, the building was burning from one end to the other. I just can't believe that it spread that quickly. It was sad to watch, it was just a helpless feeling watching the fire spread so quickly.”
“Any kind of interruption of the racing season is difficult business wise. Even losing a week to a rainout is tough. Race teams planned all during the off-season to race here for the full season. Now their plans are messed up. It's the weekly racing fix for many of our spectators. The track brings a lot of people to Orrville and Wayne County area. Gas stations, restaurants, and even stores and motels, they will be missing out on some business that they would be doing if the track was in operation.”
“The whole thing is disappointing. The Coffman's are such nice people. I'm new to the team there and they are so nice that I feel like a member of the family already. They have worked really hard to make the track a success, and it's tough when a freak incident like this happens. (General Manager) Chuck (Griffith) has put in so much work, I'm sure it is devastating to him also. It's a big setback to the track. It not only affects all of the hard work that they put in, but now it gives them a whole lot more work to do to replace things that were lost. It's tough, but I'll do whatever I can to get us back up and running.”
“I hate seeing the track have to close because of it, but understand,” stated Al Hutchison, Jr., who works as a pit steward. “Opening night was going so good. We will get through this and it will be better than ever. Just got to give it time. Everyone just hang in there, we will be racing again. I can't wait until Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway opens again!”

Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway Fire Postpones Next Two Weeks
Orrville, OH --- Management of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH regretfully announced that due to last Saturday evening’s fire that destroyed the track’s concession stand and office in addition to causing significant electrical issues this weekend’s weekly racing program and the following weekend’s World of Outlaw Late Model Series races have been cancelled. Track management will issue a press release within the next several days announcing when the track will reopen after assessments are done.
“It really saddens us that the fire happened,” stated Ernie Coffman, owner & promoter of the track. “We are very grateful that no one was hurt, that’s wonderful. However, there is significant damage to not only the structure but the electrical system at the track. We are currently speaking with officials of the health department and building departments of Wayne County, among others, to ascertain when we can get repairs started and new construction done in a timely manner. We hope to know more in a couple days when we’ll be able to start renovations and get the track open again.”
Last Saturday evening April 21 around 10:30 PM the Modified and Mini Stock features were postponed due to the fire that started in the concession stand. The concession stand, located in the northwest corner of the grounds, was a total loss, with a preliminary damage figure of $100,000.
The World Racing Group, who own the World of Outlaw Late Model Series, are disappointed in the cancellation but have expressed concern and support for the track.
“Due to the misfortunes of Wayne County Speedway we have decided to cancel the entire weekend,” commented Tim Christman. The series was originally scheduled to race at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, OH and Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway. “Raceway 7 and Wayne County complimented each other well and made it a great weekend for the teams, fans and the series. Our schedule is very busy this year and with the amount of travel our teams do we thought it would be in the best interest of everyone to cancel the weekend.”
“Plans are already in place for the same weekend in 2008. Once again, we hate this for the fans but we know that Ernie Coffman and his staff will have the place even better than it was and we look forward to our return.”

Lee, Naber, Anderson Win Openers At Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway
Orrville, OH --- The 42nd season opener at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH was held amidst fast race cars and an enthusiastic crowd as the season kick-off feature wins went to George Lee in the Federated Auto Parts Super Late Models, Nick Naber in the Sprint Cars and Troy Anderson in the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks. The Modified and Mini Stock features were postponed due to a fire of undetermined origin that broke out in the concession building.
In the Federated Auto Parts Super Late Models polesitter Kristin Flory set the pace with Wes Morrison, George Lee, Rick Bond, Eric Myers and Jason Flory in hot pursuit with 14th starting J.R. Gentry turning the wick up early and picking off the competition as sixth starting Ryan Markham then slipped into third. Morrison inherited the lead when Kristin Flory spun in turn one on lap three but a circuit later it was Lee at the point with Bond taking third from Markham while Doug Drown and Scott Peltz slugged it out for sixth.
After a lap ten caution it was a solid three-way battle for third with Morrison, Myers, Drown and Gentry that resulted in a red flag melee on the backstretch. As the laps wound down it was all Lee until the latter stages when Bond reeled him in and began to mount a challenge but Lee held on for a convincing win. Lee took flagman Don Carnes’ checkered flag followed by Lee, Markham, Jeff Esbenshade, Morrison, Jr., Mike Bores, Myers, Eric Eicholz, Kristin Flory & Chuck Hummer.
After a three year absence the fire-breathing winged Sprint Cars returned to weekly competition with a full field on hand for the debut and bragging rights. At the drop of the green in the 25-lap main event it almost looked like an Aaron Middaugh benefit as he flatfooted around the 3/8 mile banked oval in full command but eyes soon shifted to a high-flying Jason Dolick who was sitting in third from his ninth starting spot by lap three. By lap six Dolick took second from Nick Naber as Middaugh inched away from the field. Dolick and Naber held a slugfest for position as the top three pulled away.
By the 12th lap Naber’s open wheel rocketship took off on the high side as he retook second and then turned on the afterburners in search of Middaugh. As the laps ticked off Naber got faster until he was able to slingshot past Middaugh off turn four for the lead as Lee Stark took fourth but who eventually brought out the caution flag on lap 21 setting up a four-lap shootout. Naber dropped the hammer on the restart as Dolick was all over Middaugh as Tim Hunter nailed down fourth from his 12th starting slot. At the checkers it was Naber taking the win over Middaugh, Dolick, Hunter, Danny Mumaw, Chuck Wilson, Kirk Jeffries, Tony Beaber, Greg Mitchell & Jack Helget.
In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks defending division champion Troy Anderson racked up another win after starting third and getting past early leader Fred Snyder and Don Baney. By lap six Anderson and Snyder led over a hard charging Dave Haven, Jr., who worked his way through the field as Brandon Gardner began a passing cars. With a handful of laps to go Haven made a daring pass on Snyder for second as Randy Nisly and Tony Cline battled side by side for fifth. But when it was all said and done it was Anderson taking the victory over Haven, Jr., Snyder, Gardner, Nisly, Cline, Baney, Mike Duncan, Paul Whitten & Jose Marsh.
The Modified and Mini Stock features were postponed due to a fire of undetermined origin that started in the concession stand. The concession building and its entire contents were a total loss. Firefighters from the Orrville Fire Department and Apple Creek Fire Department responded and brought it under control. Track management and staff expressed their gratitude that no one was injured.
At press time track management was unsure what impact the loss of the concession building will be on next weekend’s racing program and race fans are encouraged to visit the track website at: www.waynecountyspeedway.com for updates or call the track office at: 419.522.8761. A press release will be issued soon with details of any potential changes.

Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway Prepares For ‘Outlaw’ Invasion
Orrville, OH --- In two weeks some of the nation’s top guns in Super Late Model racing will be converging on Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH for the annual Buckeye Classic 50 that will be sanctioned for the second consecutive year by the 360 OTC World of Outlaws Late Model Series. The action will all take place on Saturday evening May 5 at the popular central-Ohio based 3/8-mile dirt banked oval. Last year’s race saw Bear Lake, PA’s Chub Frank take the win and $10,000 winner’s payoff.
“I believe the World of Outlaw Late Model race coming to Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway is a blessing to everyone including fans and especially our drivers,” stated Chuck Griffith, general manager of the track. “Our local drivers are good as anyone in the USA and it has been proven by their finishes in past World of Outlaws races in the area. Don’t be surprised to see our drivers battle to the checkered with the best in the business.”
“It also gives our race fans an opportunity to get up close to the biggest names in the industry. That doesn’t happen for a lot of folks that just get to read about them on the internet or racing papers. It certainly puts some cash flow into the local area as well with hotels, restaurants and other retail outlets.”
Among some of the 360 OTC World of Outlaws Late Model Series drivers expected to be on hand include Clint Smith, Shane Clanton, Rick Eckert, Chub Frank, Steve Francis, Josh Richards, Jimmy Mars, Chris Madden, Darrell Lanigan, Eddie Carrier Jr., Tim Fuller, Billy Decker, John Blankenship, Eric Jacobsen, Adam Hensel and many other independent drivers from the region.
Some of the Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway contingent who are expected to be defending their home turf include defending track champions Doug Drown, Ryan Markham, Jason Flory, Charlie Duncan, Blaine Aber and Jim Gentry as well as J.R. Gentry, Mark Gardiner, Rick Bond, Thomas Baker, Chet Alexander, Clint Coffman, Dave Hornikel, Randy Scott, Eric Smitley, DJ Miller and others.
Last year’s race was a big success with the nearly full grandstands treated to 47 dirt Late Models from coast to coast on what can only be described as a frigid night. During the last seven sanctioned dirt Late Model races at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway the man known as Chubzilla has won six of them.
“You know something, you’d think that was domination but that’s not true,” explained Chub Frank. “The guys we run against are really tough and you could lose that in a heartbeat with these guys. The race track is definitely different than it used to be but it seems to me like it still takes the same tires. The thing is you need to be a little bit tighter but it’s still racy. All in all the track was nice.”
“I like the race track and I want to come here, it’s close to home and the track prep was good last year,” said Frank. “When they needed to water it they did and they made it perfect, they made it good, real good. We made some changes for the dash and it didn’t work so we changed it back to what we had for the heat race.”
One Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway regular and former champion had a good run in the Buckeye Classic 50 last season. Charlie Duncan of Millersburg, OH turned in outstanding performances in the main event. “I had a real fast race car, it was really good,” said Duncan. “In the heat I was quicker than Rick (Eckert) was and he knew it and he told me when he saw me he knew he had to change his line. That’s racing with these guys, they know when to do the right things. That’s one of the good things about racing with these guys, they are right on top of things and when you can race with them like that you can do something.”
“I love seeing these guys here. I like to go to different tracks and run but when they come into our playground, well, I just wish there was more of them here.”
One 360 OTC World of Outlaws Late Model Series official likes the fact the series is returning to Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway. “Last year the racing was good and I’m sure the fans got to see some good racing,” commented Bret Emrick, Race Director for the 360 OTC World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Emrick is a former track announcer and public relations director who worked at the Orrville, OH track during the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
“I think the guys did a very professional job out there all the way through. It doesn’t matter if it was one of our guys, a regional racer or the local racers that were out there, they all did great tonight and they were all professional and that’s what we’re after.”
Federated Auto Parts Wayne
County Speedway owner and promoter Ernie Coffman was also more than happy with
the how last year’s race turned out. “It was awesome, just awesome,” stated
Coffman. “The World of Outlaws people are good people. They run a good show, a
fast show and they were good to work with. And no complaints (laughs), that’s
amazing. It was a good show. The World of Outlaws people came to us and said
it was pleasure to work with professional people.”
“We’re definitely looking forward to the race at Wayne County,” stated Steve
Francis of Ashland, KY, known as the Kentucky Colonel and a regular on the 360
OTC World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Francis has had success in the win
department at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway but knows the
competition level has risen significantly. “You always plan to try and win but
with the level of competition on the World of Outlaws any time you get a win
it’s special anymore,” added Francis. “Half the field can be within a half a
second of qualifying so that tells you how tight everyone is.”
“As far as the Wayne County guys you’ve got George Lee, Ryan Markham, Doug
Drown and a bunch of those guys who are tough and I don’t know if you can call
Bart Hartman local, or Donnie (Moran), they’ve ran there a lot over the years,
Keith Berner and guys like that, there is just a lot of very good race cars in
that area. That whole area is just tough with racecars.”
The support class, gates times and admission will be announced within the next
couple days.

Nominations Accepted For
WCS Hall of Fame Induction
04-19-07
Orrville, OH --- Race track officials have announced that the 3rd Annual Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Monday June 25, 2007 prior to the start of the Pete Jacobs Memorial racing activities that are part of the 25th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek sanctioned by the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars. The third induction ceremony will take place the day before the track’s actual 42nd anniversary of the track’s opening on June 26, 1965.
“The Hall of Fame has been so well received and so popular, a real ‘feel-good’ concept and we’re looking forward to continuing it for many, many years to come,” stated Ernie Coffman, owner & promoter of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway. “We hope to continue having the ceremony as part of our Ohio Sprint Speedweek show each year. Unfortunately last year it was rained out so we held it over our Labor Day weekend extravaganza.”
“I agree with Ernie, the Hall of Fame has been a boon for the track just in terms of goodwill,” added Chuck Griffith, general manager of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway. “The fans to say nothing of the teams have really gotten behind the whole concept of honoring those who came before and who helped build this race track over the decades.”
Those who wish to submit a nominee to be considered by the WCS Hall of Fame board can submit name(s), stats and any additional background information by sending it to: admin@waynecountyspeedway.com The deadline to submit nominees is May 6, 2007.
“I am a big supporter of the Hall of Fame,” continued Griffith. “I really like the idea that not only drivers are being recognized, but fans, engine builders, car owners and a cross section of people that have added so much to Wayne County Speedway history are being considered for this honor. My hopes are that some day we can construct a building at the speedway to showcase these individuals they way they should be honored. Wow! Take a look at the one in the WCS HOF already. What a great class of people!”
The WCS Hall of Fame board currently consists of Don Danley, Carol Tope, Chuck Griffith, Ernie Coffman and Doc Lehman. More board members are expected to be added.
A look at the last two WCS Hall of Fame induction ceremonies:

as a former regular on the STARS series. Aber continues to race at WCS today.
JIM CASE
Jim Case was a dominant
Late Model driver during the 1960’s and early 1970’s and was a multiple
feature winner each season and a two-time Late Model track champion and
multiple winner of numerous WCS special invitationals.
JEFF DROWN
Jeff Drown started his
racing career at WCS in the early 1970’s and over the next two decades-plus
raced primarily in the Limited Late Model division (often called Chargers, Pro
Stocks, etc…) and in the Late Models scoring numerous feature wins and
dominant win streaks as well as two WCS championships.
MARRIANN JACOBS
Marriann Jacobs began racing in the ‘powder puff’ division in the early 1960’s
before racing at Wayne County Speedway beginning in 1965 through her
retirement at the end of 1973. During that span she was a leading winner in
the division driving Late Models owned by Harry Kane and Jim Gentry, among
others. In 1973 she won the only ‘powder puff’ championship contested at WCS.
In 1970 she once won a feature on the same night as her husband, the late Ken
Jacobs, who was inducted in the inaugural WCS Hall of Fame. She also worked at
the track for a number of years and was a long time stockholder.
DAVE LEDFORD
Dave Ledford began racing at WCS in the early 1970’s and raced Limited Late
Models (also known as Chargers, Pro Stocks, etc…) and Late Models for nearly
30 years. Along the way Ledford dominated the Limited Late Model division
during the 70’s and early 80’s with four track championships, including the
track championship during his rookie season and also set the record for most
New Track Records and amassed a large amount of feature wins. Ledford also has
multiple championships at another track.
WAYNE MAFFETT SR
The late Wayne Maffett, Sr., spent over 20 years racing at WCS and during the
mid 1970’s and early 1980’s was a big winner in the Limited Late Model
division with multiple mid-season championship victories and three track
championships. Maffett, Sr., also won multiple track championships and
invitational special events at numerous other tracks.
BRAD MALCUIT
Brad Malcuit started racing Late Models at WCS in the 1970’s and won his first
championship in 1979 before winning three more championships during the
1980’s. Malcuit holds a large win record at WCS including multiple sanctioned

Gary McKisson, current
track photographer, began photographing at WCS in the mid-1970’s on a weekly
basis and assumed the role of official track photographer upon Bob Frey’s
retirement. Since that time Gary has been a valuable resource to management
and the media at WCS.
BOB MULLENS
The late Bob Mullens was inducted into the Car Owner category. Mullens spent
three decades as a car owner with such drivers as Denny Mullens, Jim Gentry,
Dave Haven, Ronnie Baker and his grandson, Matt Bee Aber and was an ardent
supporter of WCS after his retirement as a car owner.
JAMES GENTRY SR
Being inducted into the Fan category is James Gentry, Sr., who has attended

stockholder and director at WCS.
Inaugural WCS Hall of Fame 2005 Inductees
June 26, 2005
DEAN ALEXANDER
Dean
Alexander was here at Wayne County Speedway on day one! On that very first
night here on June 26, 1965 this racer signed in and not only raced hard, but
competed at this racetrack through the 2003 racing season. For 38 years this
man has thrilled the fans at Wayne County Speedway capturing untold feature
wins and championships. Here at Wayne County Speedway this man has won in
Super-Modified & Sprint Cars, Late Models and Limited Late Models.
BOB AUTEN
Bob Auten spent many years, decades, as not only a hard working staff member
but a long time stockholder and board member. He became dedicated to this
racetrack before the first laps were taken and was a steadfast supporter and
contributor to the success of Wayne County Speedway. Everyone remembers
signing in to the pits, and especially media members, and being greeted by
this gentleman. Accepting for Bob was his son, and former Wayne County
Speedway staff member, Bob Auten, Jr.
PETE BONEWIT:
Pete Bonewit was one of Wayne County Speedway’s more colorful drivers. He had
a couple years on many of the drivers of the first season but he could get the
job done and won many, many races here at Wayne County Speedway. During the
1960’s you could hardly stop and think about the track and drivers without
immediately thinking of the patriarch of the ‘Marshallville Gang’, Pete
Bonewit.
GARY BOSSLER
Gary Bossler was an original member of the board of directors and an original
officer of Wayne County Speedway, Inc. He was the track’s first secretary on
the board and performed a multitude of tasks over the years here at the track.
He also edited and produced the track’s own newsletter and was a guiding force
and very vital in the early years when the track was first developed and also
served as the timekeeper and judge.
BOB COWEN
Many things can be said about our next inductee. He has raced about everything
but in the early years at Wayne County Speedway he was a dominant driver in
Late Models. After spending a number of years at this track he went on the
road hitting up the big money invitational races throughout the region and
became known as one of Late Model racing’s big stars and a true professional
representative of Wayne County Speedway in the 1960’s and 1970’s…. Since his
retirement he has supported the sport in a big way as a generous and active
sponsor. You can call him Mr. Ford, one of the biggest winners from the early
years, and the 1970 Late Model track champion.
DON DANLEY
There
is no racetrack in this country that can survive without race fans. Race fans
are the backbone of this sport. Race fans support this sport and make it all
possible. None of our famed drivers from years goneby, nor any of our current
drivers who are here tonight ready to do battle, would be able to do what they
love, without race fans. With that in mind the Hall of Fame committee decided
that a race fan should be selected to be inducted into the Wayne County
Speedway Hall of Fame to represent the importance of fans, and the track’s
appreciation of the fans. Our Race Fan Inductee into the Wayne County Speedway
Hall of Fame is someone who has been an avid and loyal supporter of this
racetrack and its drivers for the past 40 years. He, along with many, many
others, are the reason this racetrack has stayed in business for 40 years.
EPH DAVIS
Eph
Davis was one of the track’s first superstars, one of the track’s first
dominators. He won often, and won big, in Supermodifieds and in dirt Late
Models and not only at Wayne County Speedway but at tracks all over Ohio and
the region. He was the 1969 Supermodified champion here at the track, and
this gentleman also turned the fastest lap in qualifying on June 26, 1965
(21.36). The holder of Wayne County Speedway’s first track record and very
first heat race winner and one of the winningest drivers at Wayne County
Speedway.
LEO DOYLE
Leo Doyle was a driver who was not just popular and an exciting racer, but he
had a large fan base. He was exciting on the track and never failed to
entertain thousands of race fans throughout the years. He was a favorite to
win on any given night and fans loved watching him sling his famous #7 through
the turns on his way to the front. He was winner, he was a fan favorite.
EARL FREDERICK
