Manzanita Speedway Event Was Big Night For Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series & DIRTcar Modified Star Anthony Madrid

PHOENIX, AZ – July 3, 2008 – Last Saturday night’s event at the Manzanita Speedway half-mile oval was a milestone moment for the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series.

And it was a huge evening for Anthony Madrid, a hometown DIRTcar Modified star who turned his first career dirt Late Model start into an emotional feature win.

Madrid, 32, of Phoenix, pulled off an amazing Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series debut by capturing the 30-lap tour A-Main on June 28 at the nationally-known Manzanita facility, which hosted the region’s premier tour for the first time since 2004 when it was under the Southwest Dirt Racing Association (SWDRA) banner.

“It was just unreal,” Madrid said of his $2,000 triumph behind the wheel of a Rocket dirt Late Model owned by Phoenix’s Jeff Manka. “The crowd was so loud when I got out of the car (in Victory Lane). It’s something I will never forget.”

A DIRTcar Modified mainstay known as the ‘Friday Night Flyer’ for his weekly exploits at Manzanita, Madrid worked out a deal several months ago to run Manka’s dirt Late Model because the car’s regular driver, Mark Fowler, had planned a vacation for the end of June. He climbed in the full-fender machine for the first time several days prior to the SWDLMS event for a test session on Manzanita’s inner one-third-mile oval, but his practice laps were limited due to mechanical trouble.

“I was just hoping for a top-five (finish),” Madrid said of his goal for Saturday night’s program. “With hardly any laps in the car, I would have been happy with a top-five.”

But Madrid did better than that – much better. He won a heat race and then charged to the front of the A-Main pack from the ninth starting spot, taking the lead from polesitter Randy Carder on lap 21 and marching on to a convincing victory margin of 6.03 seconds.

One of the drivers Madrid sailed by early in the feature was four-time SWDLMS champion Lonnie Parker Jr. of El Mirage, Ariz., who entered the event riding a six-race tour win streak. Parker blew a tire shortly after being passed by Madrid and finished 11th, absorbing just his second loss in eight series events this season.

“Once I got past (Parker),” commented Madrid, “I said to myself, ‘O.K., we really have a chance to win this race. We just went by the guy who dominates the series!’”

Madrid, whose 118th career victory at Manzanita tied him with Sprint Car legend Lealand McSpadden for third on the track’s alltime win list, seemed to have little trouble adjusting to dirt Late Model racing.

“Actually, they’re a lot easier to drive than a Modified,” analyzed Madrid, who ranks ninth in the UMP DIRTcar Modified national points standings through June 30. “With the big tires, all that horsepower and the rack-and-pinion steering, the Late Model is just so much more comfortable and stable than a Modified. You get so much more traction – it’s just unbelievable.

“I could never afford to run a Late Model on my own,” added Madrid, a salesman for Sunoco Race Fuels in Phoenix and a DIRTcar Modified owner-operator. “But I’d love to get another chance to drive one.”

Count Chris Morgan, who oversees the SWDLMS as the director of the DIRTcar Racing Western Region, as one observer who came away impressed with Madrid’s talent at Manzy.

“He looked like a superstar driving the Late Model,” said Morgan. “You could see him smiling through his helmet as he ran around out there. He was determined to make it happen.”

Morgan noted that Madrid’s triumph in front of a partisan hometown crowd was the cherry on top of a spectacular night at Manzanita for the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series.

“We had two of our elite DIRTcar Modified drivers move up and make some noise in the Late Model division (Jason Noll of Phoenix finished 10th),” said Morgan. “We went from a field of 13 to 14 cars running the series earlier this year to a full field (of 20 cars). And we ran in front of the biggest crowd Manzanita had in four months.

“It was a real big step for the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series. Our challenge is to keep the momentum up and keep the car counts up so this tour will continue to grow.”

The Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series returns to action on July 19 at Prescott Valley (Ariz.) Raceway.

Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series Makes Much Anticipated Visit To Famed Manzanita Speedway This Saturday Night (June 28)

PHOENIX, AZ – June 26, 2008 – The Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series gets a big stage on Saturday night (June 28), making a hotly-anticipated visit to the famed Manzanita Speedway.

Manzanita’s half-mile oval will host a full points show for the region’s premier dirt Late Model tour, which last raced at the Phoenix track in 2004 while under its former Southwest Dirt Racing Association (SWDRA) banner. Super Late Models have not battled at the track since non-point Western Allstars DIRTcar Late Model Series action was contested during the 2007 Western World Championships.

“We’re very excited to bring the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series to Manzanita,” said Chris Morgan, who oversees the tour as the director of the DIRTcar Racing Western Region. “We’re working hard to increase the stature of the series and a perfect way to do that is to compete at one of the country’s most well-known racetracks.”

Leading the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series charge to Manzanita will be Phoenix-area star Lonnie Parker Jr. of El Mirage, Ariz. The tour’s alltime winningest driver and four-time champion, Parker carries a six-race series win streak into Saturday night’s $2,000-to-win event.

The 32-year-old standout will face a strong test in his pursuit of seven consecutive victories, however, with Manzanita’s program expected to attract the toughest Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series field of the 2008 season. With the Western Allstars DIRTcar Late Model Series and Colorado Late Model Series idle this weekend, several top talents from each tour have plans to invade Manzy.

Also joining the field will be Phoenix-area DIRTcar Modified drivers Anthony Madrid and Jason Noll. Both racers will be behind the wheel of Super Late Models for the big show at their hometown oval.

El Mirage, Ariz.’s Madrid, who sits seventh in the current UMP DIRTcar Modified national points standings, will make his Super Late Model debut in the Jeff Manka-owned No. 95. He owns 117 career victories at Manzanita – most on the facility’s smaller track, though he’s had success on the half-mile as well – leaving him one win away from tying Lealand McSpadden for third on Manzy’s alltime win list.

Phoenix’s Noll, who is 13th in the UMP DIRTcar Modified national points standings, will run Keith McKinney’s No. 6 in the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series meet.

Gates are scheduled to open at 6 p.m. on Saturday, with racing set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Billy Moyer Conquers O’Reilly Late Model Challenge

Wheatland, Missouri (6/21/08) – On Saturday night, the O’Reilly MSRA Super Late Model tour took part in the O’Reilly Late Model Challenge at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri.  The event was intended to bring the bulk of the O’Reilly sponsored tours together to see who could claim bragging rights as the top tour.  However, at the end of the night it was an independent driver, Billy Moyer, who took home the $10,000 payday and the bragging rights.

Sixty-Five Super Late Models converged on the immaculate Lucas Oil Speedway to wage war in the $10,000 to win/$700 to start event.  Via passing points in heat race action, Billy Moyer from Batesville, Arkansas earned the pole position for the 51 lap, feature event.  Moyer was flanked to his outside by Missouri’s, Terry Phillips.  At the drop of the green flag, Moyer bolted to the lead with Phillips, Jack Sullivan, and Jesse Stovall in tow.

Moyer would edge ahead to a three car length advantage in the early stages of the event as he worked the middle of the race track.  Phillips would use the low line to pull even with the leader by lap five as the duo began to battle side by side for the top spot.  As the lead pair battled for the lead, Greenbriar, Arkansas’ Jack Sullivan followed closely behind in the third position with lapped traffic looming ahead of the front pack.

Phillips would use a strong move exiting turn two in lapped traffic to take sole possession of the lead on lap 12.  Once at the point, he began working lapped traffic masterfully and had built a ten car length advantage by lap 24, when disaster struck.  Phillips was entering turn three on the 24th circuit when he made contact with the lapped entry of Bill Frye, causing Phillips to spin up the track into the turn three wall.  Phillips would be able to continue, but he had to join the back of the pack.

With Phillips to the back of the field, Billy Moyer inherited the lead with Sullivan and Stovall rounding out the top three spots in the running order.  As green flag action resumed, Moyer motored away from the field as Sullivan and Stovall began a spirited battle for the second position with Batesville, Arkansas driver, Wendell Wallace sitting comfortably in the fourth position.  Stovall would take over the second spot on lap 26 by working the extreme high side of the racy, clay oval.  Lap 31 would see Sullivan use the low line to drive back around Stovall for the second position, with Stovall falling back into the clutches of Wendell Wallace.

The remainder of the event would go caution free with Billly Moyer taking the $10,000 payday over Jack Sullivan, Wendell Wallace, Jesse Stovall, and Jeremy Payne.

Heat race wins were claimed by Terry Phillips, Jack Sullivan, Jeremy Payne, Tommy Elston, Brandon McCormick, and Jesse Stovall with Ray Moore, Steve Rushin, and Kelly Boen topping the triple b-mains.  After bad luck in his heat race and falling short of a transfer spot in his b-main, Joey Mack was forced to utilize an O’Reilly MSRA provisional for the feature.

The next event on tap for the O’Reilly MSRA Super Late Models will be on Friday, July 11th at Poinsett County Raceway in Harrisburg, Arkansas for a $2,000 to win/$300 to start, 40 lap event.  On Saturday, July 12th, the action shifts to Arkansas Motor Speedway in Nashville, Arkansas for a $2,000 to win/$400 to start, 40 lap event.  For more information, please visit www.MSRADirt.com

Wayne County Speedway Swings Open Gates For ‘Speedweek’

Orrville, OH --- Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH will swing open the gates for the 2008 season this coming Monday night June 23 when the 3/8 mile dirt oval hosts 13th Annual Pete Jacobs Memorial, part of the 26th Annual UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek featuring the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars. A tradition that began in 1983, Ohio Speedweek has always been one of the premier weeks on the All Star schedule and is also one of the most prestigious weeks of sprint car racing in the United States. Also appearing will be the Super Late Models.

Due to other matters management is considering Monday’s opening the official start of the 2008 racing season at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway with Clint Coffman at the helm of the promoter duties. Coffman’s father, Ernie Coffman, has stepped aside from the promoter’s role to focus on administrative matters. Beginning Saturday July 12 the track will resume its weekly racing program with Super Late Models, Sprint Cars, Pure Stocks and Mini Stocks.

But on Monday night all eyes will be focused on the nearly 100 drivers who compete over the seven nights of dirt track mayhem with one driver emerging as the Ohio Speedweek Champion. The crews call it “hell week” and many rarely find time to sleep until the week is over. It is a grueling week for teams and drivers, but for the fans it is one of the best values in Sprint Car racing. Monday’s winner will collect $5,000.

Among some of the nation’s top Sprint Car stars who will be competing throughout the week are Dale Blaney, Lance Dewease, Dean Jacobs, Lee Jacobs, Paul McMahon, Randy Hannagan, Greg Wilson, Cody Jacobs, Brian Paulus, Brian Ellenberger, Tim Keading, Rob Chaney, Danny Smith, Chad Blonde, Mark Keegan, Byron Reed, Tim Hunter and a host of others including a strong contingent of Australian superstar drivers. The annual Aussie invasion of the All Stars Circuit of Champions, Ohio Speedweek will be led by Troy Little and newly crowned Parramatta City Raceway track champion, Ian Loudon.  Completing the quartet is Bruce White and Roddy Bell-Bowen.  All are from Sydney, New South Wales.

“We’re really looking forward to getting back open and what better way than with the Ohio Speedweek race,” commented new FAP/WCS promoter Clint Coffman. “We’re looking forward to seeing all the fans and drivers again not only Monday but each Saturday night beginning July 12. We’ll have a full complement of concessions available and track prep has already been ongoing for Monday’s special event. This is a new challenge for me but I can’t tell you how excited I am about promoting the track.”

Among the Super Late Model drivers expected to be in competition on Monday night for the $1,500 to win companion race are George Lee, Ryan Markham, Jason Flory, Doug Drown, Dave Wirt, Rick Bond, Kristin Flory, Rick Aukland, Mark Banal, Dave Hornikle, Allan Baker, Scott Peltz, Thomas Baker, Justin Chance, Jeremy Canada and many others from around the region.

A $10,000 point fund is in place to be distributed at the end of the week to some of the most talented sprint car drivers in the country. In addition, the Ohio Speedweek promoters have once again offered a $50,000 bonus to any driver who can win 4 of the 7 scheduled events. Dale Blaney came close to capturing the bonus money in 2007, coming up just short on the final night. Will there be a $50,000 winner in 2008?

The 26th Annual UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek starts Sunday at Attica Raceway Park followed by Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway’s Monday's race, followed by Hilltop Speedway, Skyline Speedway, Fremont Speedway and Limaland Raceway with Ohio Speedweek culminating at Eldora Speedway with a $10,000 purse to the winner there.

Gates open Monday at 3:00 PM with hot laps at 5:00 PM and racing at 7:00 PM. General admission tickets are $22, with kids 15 and under free. Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway is located nine miles east of Wooster, OH on US Route 30 or 15 miles west of Massillon, OH on US Route 30 then one mile north on Carr Road. For more information contact: 419.522.8761 (office). Race day phone numbers are 419-295-6511 and 419-295-1237. Or visit the track web site: www.waynecountyspeedway.com

UMP Summer Nationals takes to Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway June 24

The thunder of engines will fill the air as racing action returns to Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway on Tuesday, June, 24, when the UMP Summer Nationals mark their return to the Historic ½ Mile on the Missouri State Fair Grounds.

“We’re real excited to bring in the UMP Summer Nationals to Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway,” commented Clint Brown, SSFS Director of Competition.  “To have them back after a 16 year absence is great and we’re all looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans.”  The last time that Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway was in 1992 and saw Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame member Billy Moyer pick up the win.

Defending Summer Nationals champion will lead the charge of the UMP contingent as they face a tough field of local competition filled with drivers including Terry Phillips, Jeremy Payne, David Turner, Chris Smyser and a while host of others.

Long known as one of the toughest test of man and machine, 2008 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the UMP Summer Nationals as late model pilots from around the country criss-cross the Midwest battling it out in 26 events over 31 days.  While traveling from tracks throughout Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, and Missouri teams will be competing for the title of UMP Summer Nationals Champion to put their name alongside the likes of defending champion Dennis Erb, Shannon Babb, Billy Moyer, and Scott Bloomquist.  “Grueling, that is the one word that probably best describes the UMP Summer Nationals,” stated Brown.  “To go out on the road for a month straight and not only keep your car together, but your body together it’s a real tough deal.  To take home the Summer Nationals title you’ve got to really be on top of your game as well as have a little racing luck during that month long stretch.”

In addition to late model action the evening will also see round 1 of the Impact Sign and Lighting Modified Shootout Series taking to the track.  The short three race series will see local modified competitors competing at Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway for the shootout series crown.  “We wanted to put something together for the modified drivers and crews that would give them a little something extra as a way of saying thank you for their support,” added Brown.

Gates will fly open at 5:00 pm with hot laps set to take place at 6:30 pm and heat race action to follow.  Adult admission for the night is only $18.00 with Seniors & Military $15.00 while kids 7-12 are $12.00.  Children 6 & under are free for the night.

Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway is located on the Missouri State Fair Grounds in Sedalia, MO which is located right on highway 65.

Duncan Rolls To Win At Jackson Motor Speedway

Byram, Mississippi (6/07/08) – Dennis Duncan out-dueled a strong field of Super Late Models to pick up his first feature win of the year at Jackson Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

With 83 total cars signed in to do battle, JMS prepared for a great night of racing action.  Brooks Strength got the night underway by setting fast time in the Extreme Wireless Super Late Model division over a field of 16 entries.  Darin Dorsey would go on to claim the win in the pole dash with Duncan, Brad Banes, and Strength chasing him to the checkered flag.

Via his dash win, Dorsey earned the pole for the feature, but his time at the front of the pack would be short lived as he would be eliminated in a lap one caution.  Over the remainder of the event, Duncan, Strength, and George Paul would wage a great three car battle for the top spot, before Paul would be eliminated by a lapped car with a few laps to go.  The caution set up a green, white, and checkered dash to the finish with Duncan holding on to take the win over Strength, Banes, Hoy Spikes, and Corky McLendon.

Chris Tuggle would put an abrupt end to Kevin Whittington’s, five race win streak in the Trick Race & Hawkins Machine Shop Street Stock division, and in the process claimed the feature win and a $300 bounty for his efforts.  Whittington finished a very close second with Wayne Medders, Jeff Butler, and Donnie Monk rounding out the top five finishers.

Cliff Williams picked up another win in the Home Improvement Company Limited Late Model division.  Michael Blount and Dallas Monzingo rounded out the podium.

In the Franklin Paving UMP Open Wheel Modified division Ryan Allday of Byram, Mississippi captured the win and was followed at the finish line by Ricky Idom, Jason Henry, Billy Collett, and Cliff Ross.

Tony Coffman won the Mini Stock feature over Jessie Bishop and Kenneth Gates.

The Touch of Class Body Shop Stingers division saw Justin Miller outrun Joe Perez and Iris Williamson to the checkered flag.

Magnolia Motor Speedway News Release

Jimmy Cliburn Claims 5th Annual Governors Cup at Magnolia Motor Speedway

Columbus, MS (6/07/08) - Jimmy Cliburn held off Dane Dacus to capture the $5,000 first place prize in the Super Late Model division at Magnolia Motor Speedway this weekend in the 5th Annual Governor’s Cup presented by Coca Cola.

With a huge field of 40 Super Late Models on hand to do battle at the beautifully groomed Magnolia Motor Speedway, Cliburn was able to best Dane Dacus at the end of the race as Dacus was out front for most of the 60 lap contest. Dacus was also trying to win for the second time this season, which would have automatically qualified him for the Cotton Pickin’ 100 event in October. Rounding out the top 5  in the action-packed event were Jason Cliburn, Shep Lucas, and Jimmy Ward.

Shay Knight, from Columbus, conquered the Open Wheel Modified field to join the winners circle for the third time this season at Magnolia Motor Speedway. He did it in grand fashion as he was only challenged for short periods of time before pulling away from the field to capture the feature triumph. Knight was followed at the line by Jeremy Shaw, Bryan Brock, Jay Burchfield, and Trinity Wyers to round out the top 5.

Tony Silvestri took the top spot in the Street Stock feature. Silvestri had been knocking at the door for the top spot in each of this year’s events at Magnolia Motor Speedway, and hefinally made it all the way to the top spot after a great battle at the front of the pack. Rusty Duncan, David James, Scott Gable, and Marvin Beard completed the top five positions.

T. K. King of Columbus matched Shay Knight’s season high of three wins by taking the top spot in the Late Model Stock division. Jason Milan, Jeremy Kelly, J.R. Parmer, and Anthony Harrell rounded out the top 5 finishers, but no one had anything for King as he cruised to victory.

A strong field of 26 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series competitors saw Chad Thrash hold off Mark Stokes of Columbus to capture the winner’s prize. The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series featured the ever growing crate engine power plants that have proven to be very reliable and competitive as well thus far into the 2008 season at MMS. At the checkered flag Shawn Edwards was third, Ben McCreary 4th, and Tony Shelton was 5th.

Magnolia Motor Speedway will return to action Sunday, June 29th with the Firecracker 4 Crown Series event presented by Cliburn Tank Lines.

Bloomquist Captures 16th Annual O’Reilly Show Me 100 Title

West Plains, Missouri (5/24/08) – Scott Bloomquist from Mooresburg, Tennessee went from worst to first in the 16th Annual O’Reilly Show Me 100 on Saturday night at West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Missouri en route to his fifth event title and a $42,000 payday.

Record high fuel prices and two inches of rain on Saturday morning did not put a damper on the 16th Annual O’Reilly Show Me 100 as 79 Super Late Models, representing 18 states, and a huge crowd converged on West Plains Motor Speedway.  On Friday night in time trials it was Ashland, Kentucky’s, Steve Francis, setting fast time around the 3/8 mile oval with a 14.717 second lap.  Francis received $2,000 for his efforts courtesy of Mark Martin Ford, Mark Martin Chevrolet, S&H Industrial, and Larry Shaw Race Cars.

With the top 24 cars inverted for heat race action on Friday night, the stage was set for the most incredible action in O’Reilly Show Me 100 history.  Freddy Smith would win the first heat race from the 8th starting position, while Terry blasted from his 9th starting position to the triumph in the second heat race.  Earl Pearson Jr. charged from the 6th position to win the third heat.  Jeremy Payne, Shannon Babb (started 4th), and Stacy Taylor claimed victories in the other heat races.

Via their heat race wins, Freddy Smith and Terry Phillips earned the front row for the 100 lap O’Reilly Show Me 100 feature event on Saturday night.  At the drop of the green flag, Phillips rocketed to the lead with Smith, Jeremy Payne, and Shannon Babb in tow.  The leaders would battle two wide for the first few laps before the caution flag flew for Georgetown, Tennessee’s, Skip Arp, who rolled to a stop in turn three on the fourth circuit.  At the time of the caution the top five running order consisted of Phillips, Smith, Payne, Pearson Jr., and Babb.

On the ensuing restart, Payne took advantage of the Delaware double file restart to race around Smith on the high side for the second position, and set sail for his teammate, Phillips.    Lap six would see Jimmy Mars from Menomonie, Wisconsin continue his march to the front as he passed Smith for the third position.

Caution once again would be displayed on lap 12 as Dan Schlieper rolled to a stop in turn four.  Phillips, Payne, Mars, Smith, and Pearson Jr. held down the top five spots as the field prepared for a restart.  With the green flag back in the air, Phillips once again motored away from the field with Payne and Mars battling side by side for the next few laps, before Mars took sole possession of the runner-up spot on lap 14.  At the same time, Pearson Jr., Smith, and Babb battled three wide for the fourth spot with Babb capturing the position on lap 19.

At the front of the pack Jimmy Mars’ car started to come around on the long, green flag run and on lap 21, he caught Phillips.  With Mars on the low side and Phillips on the high side the pair waged war for the next several laps before Mars took over the top spot on lap 33 as the leaders diced through lapped traffic.

With the action heating up at the front of the pack, much of the crowd’s attention was being focused toward the middle of the pack where 24th starting Scott Bloomquist motored past Tim McCreadie for the 10th spot on lap 36.  Lap 40 would once again see the yellow flag wave as Dan Schlieper brought out the caution as he rolled to a stop on the back stretch.  The top five positions were occupied by Mars, Phillips, Payne, Pearson Jr., and Babb when the caution was displayed.  During the caution period, Wendell Wallace and Stacy Taylor would head pitside for fresh tires and rejoin the back of the pack before green flag conditions resumed.
